I remember seeing this in the theater over 30 years ago, I have seen this scene at least a hundred times now, it NEVER ever gets old. Just watched it now and literally had me in tears of laughter. Has to be the best set up to a gag in a movie ever. Hughes took this whole idea to a level of perfect comedy, incredible.
Me too. I had to pull it up to get another good laugh. I knew when he said the drunk line he was going to do the cup to his mouth, the first time I saw the movie.
Having their fingers embedded in the dashboard of the car and then ploping out was just INGENIOUSLY FUNNY of John Hughes in this scene. One of my all-time favorite comedy movies. Perfect pairing of Steve & John. A CLASSIC!
This has been one of my all-time favorite comedies ever since I was 7. As a kid I just thought it was funny, but as an adult I’m always so moved by John Candy’s speech in the motel and where he finally reveals to Neil that his wife’s been dead for years🥺
John candy was epic. I cried when he passed as a kid. Was saddened. I didnt understand why I was crying except that i knew it hurt and that loss was huge and especially this guy. R.i.p.
If this scene had been made 20 years later, then John Candy would have appeared as a computer-generated devil. I prefer seeing the actor in a costume, as it feels so much more real, especially with the laugh. There are just some things that a computer can not create!
@Ross well said bud but not the only movie he changed his look...Canadian bacon. Then you have the skits from the tv show Fridays which was like a spin off of Saturday night live. You're first comment was extremely well said. You're absolutely correct about computers opposed to the actual person in costume. No comparison. Grest comment good Sir.
No one makes these classics anymore where the whole family will burst out laughing. I remember watching this with my grandparents and we were all rolling at the final scene with the trucks
I watched this movie with my cousin and we both laughed till we had tears in our eyes. A few weeks later, a friend of my cousin invited us to go shopping with his family. I thought the dad looked a lot like John Candy. I mentioned this to my cousin on the drive back home and my cousin started laughing. In the end my cousin rented the movie and watched it with that family. The dad was a very good sport. He actually loved the movie. I love this movie!!
This is one of the funniest sequences in any movie... Ray Charles on the dash board, the parka getting hung up, the wrong direction, the fire...and then right after that, the "camp" scene at the motel, getting drunk pff of the mini liquor bottles, reversing into motel, mashing out, and then the scene with the highway patrolman in the burned down Chrysler. It's pure gold.
An absolutely brilliant comedy. One of my all time favourite comedy movies ever, we just don't get stuff like this anymore. The chemistry of John Candy and Steve Martin (when he was funny) is pure comedy gold.
This is a great question. I don't understand why looking out the window and seeing snow caused Steve Martin to panic. What was it about seeing the snow made him realize they were going the wrong way?
I don’t drive, but I think it’s because if they were going the right way, the snow SHOULD’VE been on their left, not right. I’m pretty sure. At least in America. Idk where you are. Hope that helps.💁🏻
I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid but I remember this scene pretty well. I like the abstract comedy where they turn into skeletons and then John Candy turns into the devil.
Notable for one of the FEW times where Steve Martin's character actually seemed to 100% get along with Candy's. (Granted I need to rewatch the movie, it's a CRIME how few times I have seen it. lol)
Erin Morticia I always loved how he put both feet on the brake pedal, I mean wouldn't you just use your right foot even if it was crazy like that? I love the double foot brake.
@@kevinsullwold2388 Driving with two feet used to be s problem back then. I stopped doing it when i was 18. My super defensive driver mom still does. And i tell her its dangerous. In my town of Austin there was a psa in the late 80s about driving with two feet.
In 9th grade I had to do a presentation on transportation in the United States. I thought editing together some scenes from P, T, & A, including this one would be a brilliant idea. My teacher disagreed and sat scowling in the back of the room. The other kids in the class loved it, though.
No offense but that teacher sucked..that could have been an opportunity to compliment your editing skills...plus how could the teacher not laugh at this movie?
A classic case of distracted driving with the tractor trailers coming towards him and going back onto the highway using the off-ramp. And it all started with throwing out the cigarette and trying to take off his coat.
I watched this movie again last night for the first time since, I saw it on TV as a kid 30+ years ago. We had 3 generations of family over for Christmas, and all of us from ages 9 through 85 were laughing for 10 minutes straight at this scene.
I remember this that John Candy's character Del switches to the wrong side of the road while struggling with his parka. But actually he goes down a exit ramp struggling with his parka gets spun around and then goes back up it the wrong way and back down the road he came. Damn Del.
Cop: Do you think this vehicle is safe for the road? Candy: Yes. Yes sir, I do. Cop: You have no gauges, no outside mirrors, no working lights... Candy: Yeah, but the radio comes in clear as a bell. Don't ask me how.
I just watched this movie for the first time in a few years. I watched it tonight which it Thanksgiving. Which I thought was fitting because the ending has Thanksgiving just watched it with my family after dinner. I love when he said "Some Joker Wants To Race." I also when he said "Your Going The Wrong Way." To be honest Steve Martin and John Candy have. Amazing spot on chemistry big time
One of my favorite all-time movies absolutely has me laughing every time I watch it. In a very nice ending. Steve Martin crying his fingertips out of the dashboard is one of the highlights of the film.
I can imagine how extremely scared the truck drivers were when they saw that they sandwiched Del's car. They were probably screaming their heads off, like them but the horns probably drowned out their screams
A very funny movie by two very talented actors. Such a shame we lost John Candy to early. If you look close enough you can see the cigarette smoking in the back seat
When Neal suggests to Del "you ought to take your parka off," Del replies, "yes, yes, I will." But in the next scene where we see them, Del still has his Parka on.
My estranged mother watched this movie with me when I was about 17. It must have been 10:45 when we got to this part in the movie- and we had such a time, that we rewound it to watch this part. We must have watched it three times in the row, half asleep and dying of laughter. Genuinely one of the funniest things I have ever seen. The gasping from Steve martin is very similar to how abbot and costello did shock comedy and it immediately reminded me of those classic bits. I feel like this movie is to comedy what pulp fiction was for the penny novel dramas.
Holy shit you take a look at the guy on the wrong side of the highway, he's going to kill somebody!!! Oh my god!! HEY!!! HEY!!!!!!!!! *Rapid horn beeping* 😂😂😂😂😂
Should have included the part where they step out of the burning car when Steve Martin's character takes a casual glimpse back, shrugs, but then is like, "wait a minute!".
