I watched the premier of this epic movie, and to this day, when we drive past a corn field I imagine the apes on their horses. That's what a great movie does...leaves a lasting impression. My all time favourite movie.

I was 12 years old when this movie came out. Mom dropped me off. Had no idea about the movie as it was just released. The ending still haunts me to this day.

Imagine yourself around 10-11 years old not knowing this film exists. Now imagine catching this on TV without knowing the title because you just missed the very beginning. That was me going into this film blind. The shock of seeing that the apes were in charge and that iconic ending. That’s something I’ll never forget.

I remember my brother telling our family about this after he had seen it. He was 10 when it came out. I was only 3 at the time but it sounded so cool! I probably had some Mego Planet of the Apes figures a number of years before I had a chance to see it!

Quality was always considered then. They had to be on their A game to get acceptance from the studio due to the high production cost and risk of doing science fiction.

When Planet of the Apes aired on TV, my parents wouldn't let me see it because their friends told them the humans in the movie ran around naked. Yes, my parents believed that and that nude people would be broadcast on CBS Television.

Well, we do get a brief shot of Hestons butt....so your parents I guess were justified. According to him, the coffee girl saw the shot and made a funny comment. I think it was the case for a lot of films at the time, and this movie I believe was rated G and still showed this.

I first saw this movie in 1972 or '73 (I was either 5 or 6 years old). Fell in love with it immediately! Watched all 5 of them, and saw the natural progression of the story in ways only a child could. I watched the live-action TV series during its first run. Currently, I own all 5 movies, the documentary "Behind the Planet of the Apes", as well as the full TV series, all on DVD. The Marky-Mark remake did not thrill me, although the makeup work was really good (giving credit where it's due). The most-recent Trilogy, is outstanding! Digital effects aside, the story arc between all three movies was very well done, and actually ties in with the original 5 movies very well. In fact, I consider the trilogy to be "the Original Timeline" that lead up to the events of the Septilogy (?) (Original 5 movies), which caused a change in the timeline (apes getting smarted due to Ceasar's birth in 1973). Sure, there are some continuity issues between the two sets of movies, but "suspend disbelief", and look at them as an overall story being told by someone who wasn't actually there.... and make it fit together. The TV show didn't fit the continuity of the movies, either.... so there you go. Oh, I still have some of the "dolls" from the show, as well as a full "trading card" set. All of which I got as a child. I hear that a possible new movie or trilogy is in the works. If they do as good of a job on it as they did the last trilogy.... count me in. We'll just forget that Marky-Mark movie. And if you need to, Google "Marky Mark Monkey Movie".... you'll figure it out.

hi iggy, i read and loved your post. it's almost the same story for me. as a kid i saw the original and 'escape' as a double bill feature in the early 70's. hooked immediately. i was thrilled to find out that three more existed. loved them, then. as time went on, and after several viewings, i began to see that whilst indeed the storylines were still plausible, they messed up in other areas and forgot that some of their audience would question that. for example: when they realised they were going to keep returning to this saga why didn't someone think of the second space ship in 'beneath' landing perfectly and maybe even teaching the apes how to fly? other than having us believe that they went to the bottom of the lake {which one?} {aren't they afraid of water?}, somehow dragged the original space ship up, somehow dried it all out and then somehow figured out how to fix a broken ship. rather silly, and so easily rectifiable. also why did our beloved roddy have the same face for all three parts he played? rather silly, and so easily rectifiable. but i digress, and am being way to harsh because at the end of the day i too loved them. they thrilled me and i have been a devoted fan ever since. i had the cards, i had the dolls, i had the comics, i had the game too. i even had a mask and would ... well you can imagine all the fun i had out in the woods climbing trees with that. i must disagree, however, with marky mark's version. although i too, upon first viewing, thought it ridiculous and couldn't get past the dreadful, and too frequent, one liners and the silly cgi where they had apes jumping 27feet. ruined the movie for me. i left feeling soooooo disappointed, as i know lots of us fans were. however, upon further viewing, and perhaps a lot of mellowing from this now middle aged man, i think it's a masterpiece. weird i know. i still can't stand the one liners and the cgi jumping bugs me, but as you say the make up is excellent, the casting is very well done in so far as they got small ish actors to play the cartload of chimpanzees, huge mf actors to play the band of gorillas and, hmmmmm how do i say this politely without offending anyone {i can't!!!} slightly rotund actors to play the buffoonery of orangutans. loved that. the costumes were also outstanding, as was ape village. give it another go, and try to look beyond all the things that perhaps you didn't like then. i too loved the first of the reboot movies. an almost perfect movie. the other two were ok, but had me thinking, once again, that they really didn't care how intelligent some of the audience was going to be. i mean ten years on in 'dawn' and hardly any of the other apes talked? and how many chimpanzees were there compared to the gorillas and orangutans? they also tried way too hard to tie in with the original movie with 'war'. i mean another mute nova? silly. however, i digress again because i was very happy with them and, as you write, am awaiting with delicious anticipation 'kingdom' on 24 may 2024, and hopefully more after that. i will be there opening day at the matinee, no doubt about it. i also would love the original to be remade, word for word, shot for shot, scene by scene {although maybe not taylor getting away from four gorillas, silly}. imagine with todays cgi how incredible that would be. thanks and all the best, love and peace to you and all, xxxxxxx

With, of course, the same level of respect that you have shown me. It sounds like we have a lot in common, and I hope to one day call you "friend". I will just mention that I do own a copy of the Marky-Mark reboot.... and I have watched it more than once. I don't "hate" the movie, as it may have sounded. I just consider it a "test film" for the trilogy we got (Rise, Dawn, and War). It's just that the story... was kinda lame. The movie itself wasn't bad for being a "test run" for something better. Again, I'll comment more on what you said in a little while. So, please be patient, and have a great day/night.

If you first saw it when it first premiered on network (i.e., CBS) television, as I did, that was September 1973. We're similar in age. The next two films in the series had their television premieres relatively soon afterward, with a gap of just one-to-three months between each film. Conquest and Battle then premiered over time after the TV series started in September 1974; I think Battle finally aired in the spring of 1975. And I also had the Mego action figures, plus at least one playset. I still have the board game.

I saw this Movie when it first came out at the Long Island NY Islip movie theater. The ending was and is the most spectacular movie twist I’ve ever seen and it scare the living daylights out of me. We had nuclear attack simulations in school, like huddling in the hallway would’ve protected us and the air raid siren tests. Those speakers were absolutely LOUD. The best movie ever.

I first heard of this movie back in 1970 when I saw a television commercial advertising it coming to cinemas in Australia. We got it later than in the USA. First saw it in 1974 (I was 12 at the time) and then the television series came out. Even then I knew there were a lot of hidden meanings and messages in the movie. 9:35 I've heard the opinion expressed more and more and am coming to agree with it that having to work within these budgetary restraints made them more creative. I for one definitely prefer the early ape civilization to just another scifi fancy pants setting. I haven't seen this movie in too long I forgot the museum scene so perfect. It's like showing and not telling or something. Me and my entire family who all liked different movies still agreed that Siskel and Ebert were our reverse barometers.

I recently found your channel so have been picking out some of your retrospectives like this and Alien. This movies is much older than I am but it is still and amazing movie. I listened to the audiobook about a year ago and was so impressed. It's quite a compact book. As you said there are are a significant number or parallels as well as some major differences. There was an incredible amount of dignity in how the book was written and translated to English.

I thought (dare I say it) that PLANET OF APES was better than 2001 SPACE ODYSSEY) they are comparable both being 60s films, involving Apes & exploring man's place & purpose in the universe I didnt mind the abstract style of 2001 leaving the viewer to decide about all the hidden meanings. but I felt there were too many even as an Art film. PLANET OF APES has so many more sole & story layers, the Society issues of the day fitting the story, at that time- nuclear threat, slave trade civil rights issues etc

Yeah. I think most would agree with you. Very different films obviously and i think the movie and shot composition is great, the narrative itself in 2001 is obviously thin. I love Apes so im surprised how Pauline Kael dismissed it and said it wasnt much other than popcorn entertainment lol. I was a big fan since I was a kid, I was able to watch Escape, Conquest and Battle at the Theater. They had did the Go Ape again , I was 7 or 8. So this was like 1975, I never liked Beneath though.

I saw the original movie when it came out when I was 7. My mom took me and I think she had a thing for Charlton Heston? It has been my all time favourite movie since. The next one that I loved was War for planet of the Apes. I wonder how many people watching this video were around when the original came out? I also have the book.

In retrospect, its obvious they were on earth. Oxygen, the gravity being the same, the duration of days, the fact that there were humans, plants being the same and the fact that they all spoke english, it has to be earth!

I first saw the film ( not movie, I'm British!) On TV when I was a kid and loved the series in the mid 70s. I still have the Mego action figures, in pretty good condition, apart from the three humans they did, but who cares about them when you're about ten? It sounds terrible to admit it but I always had a sneaking respect for dr. Zaius! I mean, he's an appalling bigot, arrogant, clandestine and with a streak of conscious cruelty a mile wide, but I can bring myself to understand Why he behaves as he does; he knows the truth ( who knows by what means he discovered it?) and is determined to conceal it because he sees his own society as fledgling and fragile, not perfect but at least stable. He fears that if the truth were to become known at this stage, it would disrupt and potentially destroy the whole thing before it had a chance to become more confident in itself and accepting of new evidence. 'Maybe one day, but not yet...' At least that's the way I choose to see it in retrospect..! Interesting video, always good to be reminded why you liked something in the first place!👍👍👍👍👍

The new ones don't deal with the horror of how we, as a human species, would actually greet this upside down world. We think we would be all cool and just like. you know, deal with it. But of course........we would be utterly discombobulated. We would not have the slightest clue. And this is why this film is so timeless. Because.....it's close

I feel the new ones provide an alternate beginning like 3 to 5 were with the coexistence of man and ape vs the idea of man being at the lowest of the animal totem pole and apes becoming a reflection of humanity at its most powerful. Agreed

I made a point of buying the box set of the original series of films as these are some of the best science fiction movies ever made. Hell, all of the bonus features alone are worth buying the set. I'll never bother with any of these CGI-laden remakes.

The original movie was very loosely based on the novel by Pierre Boulle, accounts I have read Boulle was an amazingly imaginative writer, but he did not understand cinema. Anecdotally it was said by people who knew him that he was not enamoured by the movie Planet of the Apes as its storyline deviated so comprehensively from his novel. My older brother obtained a copy of Boulle's novel from our local library and I managed to read part of it before it had to be returned and was intrigued by it, so much so that I went and got the book out myself to read it all, this was in 1967. It was a year later when I was 12 years old when I first saw Planet of the Apes at my local cinema, I enjoyed the movie but it never really struck a cord as even 12-year-old me thought the premise of the movie was a bit silly and bore little resemblance to the Pierre Boulle's novel I had enjoyed so much. I watched the next movie in the sequence Beneath the Planet of the Apes but was even less impressed by it. I have seen one other in the sequence Battle for the Planet of the Apes as an adult many years later, the less said about it the better. :)

Thank you so much for sharing your story behind this. You are the same age as my late father was when this came out. I agree the later films went down in quality.I think it could be done, adapting the original novel. Simply dont show the faces of the characters Jinn and Phyllis in the prologue, they speak human language, they wear human clothes, they eat....we dont see what they eat. There are not a whole lot of people out there like you who have experienced the novel first. Do you like the current adaptations? They are coming out with another one, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes in May....

You know this is a great movie And it has been nit-picked But there is one thing that nobody seems to address..... When he finds the Statue of Liberty at the ocean....... Which also is right there at the city of New York that we find out in the next movie.... The only place in the United States were the mountains come all the way to the ocean is at the Pacific coast.... There are no mountains at the coast of the Atlantic.....

I believe nova actress, was the wife of Daryl zanick . 20th century fox president. It was her first job .. i remember in 60s set tv show mad men , the main character don Draper takes his son to see this on opening day , afterwards he asked if his son liked it , he answered yes , he said me too want to watch it again , the boy agreed and they stay and wait for it to play again.. Voyager yes distant origin . I enjoyed it .

I’d see parts of this movie on one of those rainy day afternoon movies back in the day, as a kid I didn’t understand the ending LOL but the Simpsons episode A Fish Called Selma clued me in. I watch it every couple of years. Dr Zaius reminds me of Dr Fauci.

This franchise is my fav sci-fi property mainly because it does what science fiction does best in that it is about the ideas presented That quip from Ebert-i understand he was very renowned and when I was young I took his opinions with some worth Then we mature and his opinion is just his which many may find is very wrong As Dr Zaius says , he is just a man

The movie was more primitive because they could not afford high tech ape civilization. That's production. This was a k8d matinee movie. Of course they were not going to spend huge sums of money on it. Hell they didn't even expect a 2nd movie much less 4.

I got an Easter egg for you guys!! When Taylor landed the date on his ship read 3978! When Brent crash landed his date meter read 3955, 23 years BEFORE Taylor arrived. So how could Brent have met up with Taylor 23 years BEFORE he arrived? Also, when Cornelius, Zira and Milo escaped their ship chronometer read 3955 23 years BEFORE Taylor arrived. So how could they have met Taylor and help him? How could Milo have "salvaged his ship, studied it and half understood it" (quote Escape movie- Cornelius to Pres. commission) and used it to escape?

@@Nerdporeal I agree. But one I get a kick out of with the new movies is the title if the films. "Planet of the Apes" ok with that one. "Rise of the Planet of the Apes'-aka 'Conquest of the Planet of the Apes". "War for the Planet of the Apes"-aka "Battle for the Planet of the Apes". No matter how you look at it, the originals were better because there was no CGI, the players were real, alive, more convincing.

They do consider where they are. Landon says not where we are more when. Taylor talks of a Hessline curve in time. They know the dates. The apes speaking english could be a legacy of other marooned astronauts. If Taylor had been away for 2000 years other missions could have landed on the planet essentially before them.

Classic that when Dr. Zaius was confronted with the evidence in the cave, he still refused to believe in a fantastic ancient human civilization. Or did he? A learned ape and foremost keeper of the faith, he probably deduced the truth ahead of time and ordered the cave sealed to protect ape society.
