I’m a huge POTA fan and I really wanted to buy this, but I can’t justify the price. Marvel should have collected all FIVE of the movie adaptations and added colors to the three that aren’t collected here. That would have made this book special and worth the cover price.

I have this on pre-order but after seeing this I have decided to cancel. I still want a Planet Of The Apes omnibus but this is way overpriced for what it is. I will get the black and white collections if they happen as they are my favourite of the 70's Marvel magazines, but this collection should be the extras in the back of one of those omnis not an omni itself. I cannot justify paying the amount of money being asked for this little content.

Ok, a few random thoughts as I really don't understand what Marvel are doing here with this release (it's not an omnibus at all) especially given they've done full on omni's for the other Fox licenced properties they now have. The pricing is full on ridiculous, very few people will purchase this at $100 - and dearer for us overseas of course. There will be epic collection down the line, and they'll be much better value too, since there is an abundance of b&W magazine material to use, and stuff that appeared here in the UK. (and yep - Apeslayer was indeed part of that Omar). And speaking of which, why is some of that not stuff included here as a proper omni? The other oddity of course is that most of us will be familiar with always seeing the material in b&w, it actually looks strange seeing it here in colour. The cover of issue 2 of the magazine (issue 1 of POTA weekly here in the UK) by Bob Larkin would have made for a better cover, rather than this (new?) painted cover. Surely this book could have at least used as extras both the magazine covers from the U.S issues featuring the movie adaptions, AND the UK covers made for our weekly comic that didn't see use in the States. Anyway, I do actually really like these adaptions and will get this eventually, but certainly not at this price for sure.

In 1974, as the TV series was getting off the ground, Marvel began publishing it's licenced black and white magazine which lasted (I believe) 29 issues. It had some beautiful painted covers, original comics stories set in the Apes world, articles about the films and TV show and the early issues had multi-part adaptations of all 5 Apes movies. In an effort to wring a little more profit from the material, Marvel also published colourised reprints of the first two movie adaptations which probably didn't sell very well and the comic was cancelled with issue 11. I actually loved the b&w magazine. When Marvel recently became the comic home of the Apes again due to Disney acquiring Fox's properties, I dared hope that the magazine would be reprinted in the same way as the Savage Sword of Conan was. Instead we get an overpriced, slim collection of the 11 issue cancelled colourised reprint comic with only a textless version of the book's cover painting as bonus material. Why?? Is it to test the water to see if people are willing to buy the old material? Has it been issued to quell demand while they work on a proper, restored collection of the original magazines? Or are these 11 issues the only material that was properly archived and therefore all we're ever going to see? Whatever the case, charging this much for this book is nothing less than cynical exploitation of the fans of the series. I'm pretty sure buying the back issues of the comic it reprints wouldn't cost anywhere near as much as this "omnibus!" They can't use the "licenced property" excuse- Disney OWNS it! All this book represents is a massive screw-up on the part of Marvel and bodes very badly for the future of the Apes in their creative control. And I won't be buying it!!

The series probably got cancelled because Marvel were losing the license as they cancelled the magazine around this time. All 5 films were adapted in the magazine. Strips and articles from the US magazine were reprinted in a UK weekly comic which was very successful. I think some of the strips also had extra panels so it would be nice if an eventual magazine Omni had the expanded strips.

This is a pretty silly release. Adventures on the Planet of the Apes was just the reprint title and they only got round to reprinting the first two film adaptations. Releasing this is like releasing Marvel’s Greatest Comics as an Omni rather than the Fantastic Four issues they were reprinted from. Marvel did a fantastic job with their Deadly Hands of Kung Fu Omnibuses. A book like that from the Planet of the Apes magazines would be wonderful. Maybe this is to test the market for that.

That price is ridiculous. There's no bigger fan of Planet of the Apes than I but the magazine archives and the above omnibus are a hideous disgrace. The problem is that Marvel will interpret the lack of sales as lack of interest in the subject matter rather than their own godawful packaging and price gouging. What they should have done was do a whole new run of Omnibuses for the magazines and then just incorporate the comic series into it. Instead we get this insultingly priced nonsense.

I'm so glad that they put an Omnibus Edition of those full colour Planet of the Apes comics. I only had Adventures on the Planet of the Apes #6 as a kid, that a friend gave to me as a second hand comic without the cover. I really hope that Marvel does put out the black and white POTA magazines in omnibus format, so that the entire original movie adaptation run is completed. I don't know who currently has the IP licences for other of the movie/ TV based adaptations the Marvel has done over the years, but I would love to see the Logan's Run and Man From Atlantis comics in the 70's get collected in hard cover format. Those series had less issues than the Adventures on the Planet of the Apes, so I don't think they could be considered Omnibus books. I know that it is less than impossible to ever see Logan's Run or Man From Atlantis get printed ever again, but then again I never thought I would ever see the original Marvel Planet of the Apes ever get collected in a hard cover book. I honestly don't mind that this Planet of the Apes Adventures is being collected and priced as an omnibus. I am just very grateful to see Marvel putting it out. An even more complex wish list item for me would to see Marvel Super Special get collected in hard cover. There were some fantastic movie adaptations in those full colour magazines, including Raider of the Lost Ark and Temple of Doom, Al Williamson's art on Blade Runner, and John Buscema's art on Conan the Barbarian film adaption and so many more. I can imagine that clearing those licences now would be incredibly complex and expensive. It would be neat to see Marvel's Battlestar Galactica series collected in Omnibus too. I'm not sure who currently has the license to publish Battlestar Galactica comics. Marvel Comics in the 1970s and 80's always had some fun movie/ TV based comics. I look back on it with fondness.
@ThePragueRadio
@ThePragueRadio Год назад
I have the excellent B&W Boom Studios Archives - one point that's worth highlighting is that the original stories as printed in the B&W magazines were edited in the colour comics to reduce the page count, and some panels were also edited with some rough and ready art corrections in places (I spotted that from Omar's video overview and comparing it to the gorgeous black white and grey wash approach to the B&W versions). Having said that, I love POTA material and if this were cheaper (e.g. $49.99 sort of price point) I'd probably be picking it up - but at this price point it's a hard pass I'm afraid. Hopefully Marvel has longer term plans for other collections, but this doesn't feel to be a great start.

Maybe this will be the first omnibus, that only ppl with interest will buy, and not those who are just want a cheap deal and doesn't care about reading it. Also if there are ppl who gladly pay over cover for an oop book they are interested in, I'm sure they'll gladly pay $50 or $60 for this because ppl in the US (and I think that's the targeted main market) are always be able to buy their books with ridiculously big discounts, who really suffer is the ppl overseas.

MARVEL: "Still $100" Just like they printed on the floppies before bumping it up a nickle from .15 to .20 in 1971.

Holy cow! They definitely should have rotated the words on the spine like Devil Dinosaur. I’m sure people would’ve complained about that though lol. There’s no winning!

I suspect (in good faith) that the larger price is due to restoration on top of licensing cost. Like Conan on top of a MM edition.

Boom already released their Planet of the Apes archive books, in print and digital, which contained Marvel's material, so I'm not sure anything further has been done with what's included here? In the credits of volume 2, which contains these, it does have some for restoration by various people. Looks like a different restoration credit on this Marvel volume.

$100 for 11 issues? Come on Marvel you cant just slap the omnibus label on it and overcharge the consumer! Easy pass

I'm afraid this is not $99.00 worth of content. They would be stretching it at half the price. They should have combined it with the Mike Ploog magazine material & then I would have given it some consideration. Since Disney now owns Marvel & Fox is there any chance that they'll re-publish the Gabriel Hardman or Carlos Mango material?

I know you can't really comment on the price point but this is ridiculous! When it appeared as a pre-order I thought it was an error. Like they dropped a number somewhere. If it was like a third of the price I would be all over this, since I'm a big fan of the Planet of the Apes in all forms. But a 100$?!? Thanks for nothing Marvel!

The Simpsons already spoiled Planet of the Apes almost 30 years ago. I haven't seen the movie but yeah, pretty much everyone knows the big twist.
