I bought the 33 1/3 record of Planet of the Apes. Jerry Goldsmith composed a masterpiece of avant-garde music. Stravinsky, if he heard it, must have been absolutely stunned by it.

Stravinsky died in 1971 and this movie was from 1968, so he just might have heard it.

From 7:35 is simply genius at work, even a 40 year score still outclasses nearly all of the current crop of composers. This man had pure talent and such musical resonance, its hard to comprehend
@DamienDrake
@DamienDrake 5 лет назад
The score is over fifty. I'd be curious to hear what the current composers could do if they didn't have every note micromanaged to death by a dozen overseers. That's why James Horner returned to the concert hall in his later years. He was sick of the requirement to musically appease the 12 to 15 different people looking over his shoulder.

Long time listener, first time commenter here, but a fabulous addition to the ears of Goldsmith fans everywhere. Kudos & bonus to the Charlton Heston closer that may spoil it for those that have never seen the movie, and I'm talking to all the infants out there (so don't do it). I'd like to think everyone has seen this most excellent film & if you're one of the 5 people in the world that haven't.....go see it and THEN come back to listen to this excellent Goldsmith soundtrack.

I just watched this movie on bluray. I remember watching it on tv as a teenager in the 1970s before the short-lived tv series came out. Rod Serling from The Twilight Zone series had cowrote the screenplay. I enjoy the soundtrack very much too. It added that eerie tone to the movie.

"New Hollywood" (1969-1980 - "Easy Rider" to "Heaven's Gate") was short but glorious; so too was the period of adventurous composing for film scores - this being one of the vanguards. Many of the great new composers of the time were able compose in a variety of genres: jazz, High Romance, synth (electronica), fusion, avant garde, period pastiche, etc.. Though this jarring seems less atonal and chilly than it did 45 years ago, I can't imagine a studio today EVER approving a score like this.

Back in 1967, producer Arthur Jacobs and director Franklin Schaffner toyed with the idea of an Ape language onscreen with English subtitles. The idea was dropped. I wish someone with today's technology would insert a "Simian" language along with English subtitles for new viewers.

A screenplay by Rod Serling, outstanding performances by Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans, Kim Hunter, James Whitmore, James Daly, and Linda Harrison, superb direction by Franklin Schaffner, and last but not least Jerry Goldsmith's score. I'd take sentimentality over Zimmer's generic, cookie cutter wallpaper any day. The endlessly meandering ostinati and chords hanging in the air, doing absolutely nothing, drive me insane, though not nearly as bad as all the kids saying he's the greatest composer to write for film. Great. I never feel old and now I feel old.
