It doesn't usually make it into "best scores" lists but it should. Great reduction and analysis.

*YES.* I’ve been waiting so long for this one. It’s nothing short of a perfect cue - the kind that is so unique that only a mad genius could have written it. Jerry Goldsmith was every bit as smart and skillful as he was bold and daring, and that’s why I love him as much as I do.

One of the best US films ever made with an incredible score! Way better than anything from the last decades.

Jerry Goldsmith did such a fantastic job composing this! ...and it's so different than much of the music for which he's best known.

Jerry loved the 12 tone system, he was a modernist at heart, even when he went tonal he had to inject some atonality into his music.

best cue of all time in my opinion. Obviously just my own view but it's got everything and Goldsmith had the pleasure of scoring a scene with no dialogue.

David, thank you so much for this wonderful transcription. Of course, this shows the genius of Jerry Goldsmith, but hats off to his orchestrators: Arthur Morton and Herb Spencer. All Masters of their craft.

Goldsmith wrote what I would consider the most amazing film score of all time. The string parts from 2:32 to 2:35 are slightly referenced (and modified), taken from the ending of Movement II of Béla Bartók’s masterwork “Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta”.

Awesome how this track returned for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes for its human hunt scene

My favourite Jerry Goldsmith piece from that era, many of his mannerisms would continue to evolve in the 70s especially, Leonard Rosenman may claim to be the master of dodecacophony but I'd say Jerry gave him a run for his money.

One of my favorites and so fresh and original while suiting the tone and energy of the action on screen! Excellent reduction and analysis

12-tone: a cheap and fast way to get great chords. I remember that when I first saw the movie, I thought the music was by Lalo Schifrin with all the piano and percussion and the octatonic scales and ostinatos.

I love Jerry Goldsmith's scores! He most likely was inspired heavily by Varese' "Arcana". I love this cue! I saw this movie when it came out in 1968. I was 16 years old. Great!!!!!

TREMENDOUS work on this. It's always so nice to see how effective "non-traditional" musical elements can be in film when done with purpose. You nailed this - congrats. Looking forward to more!

Excellent cue and analysis! I'd just "correct" a statement in the first slide. As John O'Callaghan writes (he dedicates a whole chapter to this), the Stravinsky influence on Goldsmith's music is mostly blown out of proportions, especially in the case of the Planet of the Apes score, as Stravinsky himself didn't write a lot in the serialist or 12-tone techniques. The misconception probably comes from the interview with Jerry in the Summer 1972 Cinefantastique, where he responded to a question on his general musical influences with "Yes, there's Stravinsky, Bartok, Alvin [sic. Alban], Berg, and Schoenberg." Source on page 43 in Simians & Serialism: A History and Analysis of Jerry Goldsmith's Score to Planet of the Apes. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone interested, it's very much worth it!

I disagree. Harmony is not the most important element here. Just listening to the Rite of Spring and to this, you can easily tell it's way closer to Stravinsky than to almost any piece by Arnold Schoenberg or Alban Berg, in terms of form, orchestration and overall character.

Also one of the main structural influences is Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste Mvt 3 which was a popular temp score in those days. First 5 notes are identical: C A Bb Eb D... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QElT9KD4uX8.htmlsi=Iqp8stY5MZAApSKl&t=1127

Dear David, thanks for the very interesting analysis. May i ask where you got the score? Since i am improvising on Korngold in my live Recitals i would love to get to know more deeply to Goldsmith's Score to improvise also in his Style, so I would like to analyse the complete Score from Planet of the Apes.
