Is there a wrong way to pick a Warhammer 40k army colour scheme? How should you approach the use of colour theory on your models, and is that even something you need to be thinking about with miniature painting?
In this episode of Paint Perspective, George and James discuss all of the above - to consider whether you're looking to create your own colour scheme or following the Warhammer lore to the letter.
So... this is where you're going wrong picking a colour scheme for your Warhammer 40k army.

One thing I noticed is these complimentary colour schemes are all around us, in nature on flowers or on products such as shoes or clothing. If you're unsure of picking a colour that will go together you can always look at marvel superheroes lol

just a bit of trivia for anyone who wants to go down the full colour boffin rabbit hole, red and blue are not primary colours in paint/ink. cyan, magenta and yellow are primary colours, red, blue and green are secondary colours. in light its flipped around, red, blue and green are primary and cyan, magenta and yellow are secondary. thats why every 3 colour printer uses cyan, magenta and yellow, they can print red by mixing magenta and yellow for example. in light its reversed thats why we get rgb screens because its 3 colours of light being used to mix all other colours. i know we were all taught at school that red, blue and yellow are primary colours, I got an A* gcse art followed by an A in a-level art and came out the end of art college thinking red, blue and yellow were primary colours, was told that the whole way by all my teachers. but its wrong, if that were true then people who make printers that need to replicate all colours in the spectrum from 3 primaries would use red, blue yellow, yet none of them do, they all use magenta, cyan and yellow and when they mix any combo of 2 of those together they produce red, blue or green. this mistake warps our colour wheels because were putting 2 secondary colours and a primary colour in a triangle , which is causing parts of the spectrum to be squashed or stretched, and then were just ignoring the fact we cant actually mix saturated magenta or cyan from our primaries, and also ignoring that we cant really mix vibrant saturated greens. yet people who build machines that absolutely need to replicate all colours can almost perfectly replicate the full spectrum and they all use cmy // rgb primary and secondary. its just an interesting note for aspiring colour geeks. purple and orange, great colour combo, most art teachers will tell you those are secondary colours, theyre actually tertiary colours, thats a fact and those teachers are wrong, but it doesnt change the important thing to us which is they look great together regardless of which name you give them, we dont have to go and repaint our models cause we got the naming conventions wrong. if it looks good then its good.

For my SM army, I decided to find a chapter who's aesthetic or theme I liked. I settled on Dark Angels due to them effectively being space knights 🤷‍♂️ But I didn't like the green color of them. So I looked into their successor chapters, lore, etc, and found their old Legion color scheme of black, red and white. Decided to make a homebrew successor that honors the old ways of the chapter, before all the secrecy and paranoia. They wear the old Legion colors; black armor, with their right shoulder pad red, and their left white. To "modernize" the scheme, they then have metallic accents (chest Aquila, shoulder pad trim, etc) based on their rank, Sgts have silver, Lts have silver and some gold, Cpts have mostly gold, etc. For painting quickly, I prime black, zenithal highlight w/ white ink, airbrush Abbadon Black for the armor. Shoulder stay white, then each pad get Flesh Tearers Red contrast for the right pad, and Apothecary White for the right pad. Washes for shadows and gaps, knock out the metallics and highlights, and boom done.

Awesome way to go about it, and a great example of the freedom of choice you have when painting Warhammer 40k, even if you start by picking an army from the lore.

I've made my armies compliment each other via their secondary colors. My main army is necron, so their secondary colors are green, while my Adaptus Astartes use black bodies and red arms. It wasn't planned, but a happy accident. I don't even remember why I had red to begin with

Triadic color schemes and then dial the color a liiiiittle bit back toward the complimentary color is very nice. For example Red and green. Not my favorite, but Red armor and turquoise lens or gems, red and Cyan (these have a touch of green or green with a touch of blue like teal) to me looks great. Instead of yellow and purple, yellow and violet imo looks much nicer.

theres actually a reason for that, youve hit on something maybe without knowing it. red and green are not opposite on the colour wheel. red is a secondary colour and so is green, so they cant be opposite. red is actually opposite cyan on a proper colour wheel, cyan being a primary and red being the secondary directly across from it.

Can you do a video on the different air brushes you sell on your website and go through their positives and negatives and show examples of their performance 🙏

If I paint an army one colour I won’t have it as a main on the next army. Somewhat forced me to practice with other colours

That's a great practice to get into! It also helps that when your friends are borrowing your army for a game, or even when they're on the shelf - they don't all look the same!
