I'm in Columbus, and it has been bone dry. I wanted to cry when I got my water bill, so you are lucky, especially with all your new plants. I have a rising sun redbud, which I love, but the big branches keep dying out. I am not sure what is causing this, but I suspect I won't have it much longer. It does grow new branches, though. This keeps it from growing very big.

Love your plans for the “swing set bed.” It will make this area a feature in your landscape rather than merely a more functional space as a convenient place to put the swings - very creative 🌳🌸🌲.

Hi Matthew! Your roses by the house will be so pretty on that beautiful trellis. I'm looking forward to seeing the climbers by the barn on the trellis system you're planning. They are beautiful roses. I'm looking forward to seeing all of the shrubs you will be getting, and your new plans for that border, too. I'm glad you're keeping the swing set. I would, too. The plans you have for that area will be really nice. Thank you so much for sharing!

The trouble with the Carolina sweetheart Redbud is that the trunk is too thin to support the canopy. I potted mine in a container after I purchased it from “fast growing trees” to get the root structure stronger. Now it’s planted in our yard, but the winds that come through and makes canopy just blow every which way. The only way you can save it is to stake it.
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden 2 месяца назад
Yeah, that's not particularly limited to this variety though. Many of the redbuds have this issue.
@thedivide3688
@thedivide3688 2 месяца назад
Young trees of all kinds need to be staked. We stake them in the nursery too. So it’s not a problem of the tree. If you don’t want to worry about staking buy a more mature tree with established trunk. It’s the difference between buying a $100 dollar tree and a $1000 tree.

I love the Bailey' shrub border you showed. I have some ninebarks from them 'Little Devil' and they get powdery mildew even with a lot of space between them. I'd be afraid to plant them as close as they show in the border garden. Thoughts?
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden 2 месяца назад
Hmm, I’m not sure. I had several ninebarks at the last garden and have a few already in this one and none of them are diseased. I’ll also note that 2 of the 3 that I have now were dug up in March, sat in containers until a couple weeks ago when replanted, and received overhead water twice a day while in the containers. May just be an issue in your climate.

What a beautiful Redbud! I love those trees. I have an regular old Eastern Redbud and a Ruby Falls. Not much more space to plant any other trees. I am loving your progress, as usual, and can't wait to see what you get for your shrub border. Oh, Matthew, when are you going to get into Bonsai? (LOL)

It’s not just the heat in the southwest - it’s the lack of humidity and scarcity of water. For example, where I am in Colorado (the Front Range, a transitional zone between the mountains and the Great Plains), we are in zone 5b/6a and we expect between 13-20” total precipitation a year, with most years about 15-16”. We also have high altitude and that changes what grows and thrives here as we get more intense UV rays. We depend on mountain runoff for a lot of our water, but so does every state between here and Southern California. I would never be crazy enough to try and plant hydrangeas here - they would suffer. My neighbor, who grew up in Indiana and has no love of gardening, planted four hydrangea this spring and all of them are suffering despite her daily watering. They haven’t put on any growth or blooms, and I doubt they will survive our sunny, dry winter. So I watch all of you east of us and enjoy your hydrangeas. What works for me are sedums and plants native to the region. I have given up on planting in ground annuals. I can keep them alive in containers but not in ground.

The red bud is beautiful!! I bought a Rising Sun Dogwood after I saw yours. Matt, be careful with nandinas. They can be quite invasive. At least they are here in southern Il. We pulled a few out of our landscape but the runners kept coming out everywhere. Thanks for tour. See you next time.

Hey Matthew thank you for all your informative videos! Question: I have an Eden climber in central Illinois. I have had it for two years. Each year it grows almost to the top of the trellis. Then over the winter (6a) it dies all the way back to the ground. Also, it only blooms first thing in the spring and never blooms up those new canes that grow to the top of the trellis. Any suggestions?
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden 2 месяца назад
Some climbers don't have the hardiest canes and do lose them over winter, so I don't think that's necessarily unusual. Some people wrap their roses or I've also seen people lay them down and "bury" the canes to keep them over winter. That's more work than I would care to do. I just ordered an Eden Climber after seeing how stunning it is when I was in Oregon. I would recommend instead of growing it up, you attempt to trellis it horizontally as I mentioned in the video. As a true climber, the canes will produce the best blooms when trained horizontally as you can see in the photos here: heirloomroses.com/products/eden-climber

My little limes are getting yellow at the bottom leaves...last year a little holly tone did the trick...is it too late in the season to add the fertilizer?
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden
@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden 2 месяца назад
Depends on where you are, but it’s probably fine for an organic. But, I’d say it doesn’t need fertilizer. It’s not uncommon for panicle hydrangea leaves to turn yellow and fall off on the bottom or inside the shrub. The leaves that don’t get the most sun are shed because they’re not providing any benefit to the plant.
