"Why would you plant radishes when they aren't that good?" 😂😂😂 The silly thing is that I don't really like them either but I still grow them because I love to grow things! I give them to my friends.
Ok but have you roasted radishes in the oven? Quick pickled them? They have lots of other applications beyond raw eating. They’re actually incredible in ultra thin slices on a garden tomato sandwich. I do like them but I have a hard time getting a good product, between weather and pests. I’ll always grow them though.
@@emkn1479 I have pickled daikon before. I definitely intend to try more radish things but until I actually do it, I'm glad to have people to give them to! I know low carb people like to use them in place of potatoes in certain applications.
Radish and their greens can be thrown into a Korean “doenjang” soup, or a miso soup also and it’s delicious that way if you don’t want raw, or you can roast them, or pickle them, but if you do eat them raw, I like them with my tacos, in salads, on sandwiches, or even with just a little butter smeared on them and a little bit of your favorite sea salt.
🇨🇦 GG, I start my basil in the house and plant them around May 20th. I'm a little farther north than u, I'm a 10 minute drive north of Washington state in Canada. At the very first sign that they're gonna go 2 seed I cut them back down to the next lower set of leaves.I continue doing this till aabout 3rd week of September. I have 29 plants this year that are about 34 inches tall and 2 feet wide. Mostly make pesto and freeze it. I've also been growing superhots 4 about 8 years now. Reapers, 7 pot, Trinidad Moruga, ghost, habanero etc. I'm frickin addicted to them lol! Eat them every day. Been watching you and your wife for a few yrs now, maybe more. Don't forget Spinach. Here in Canada I plant seed about August 10th. This allows for a few large picking before it gets too cold in November. I then cover the patch with an old bed sheet , for the winter. This prevents the winter winds dehydrating and killing the plants. With an already established root system they start again early in the Spring, weeks before you would even be planting seed so you get two crops out of one planting. Bloomsdale and Winter Giant (viroflex) are really hardy varieties I rely on. Good luck.
I’m in Canada too!! First time gardener. I just planted spinach 2 weeks ago in my containers in my balcony. I’m gonna try the bed sheet trick you mentioned
“Most of you like basil…” I must be one of the few that isn’t obsessed 😂 cilantro and parsley all day long, thanks Re: carrot germination, a paper lawn and leaf bag worked perfectly for me. They came up so fast. Re: calendula, they’re perfectly frost hardy in my garden. A freeze will ultimately kill them but they can handle frost in my experience.
I am zone six as well. I actually searched “zone six gardening” but I didn’t find your channel until now, by accident. I think you should add “zone six” to some of your titles or something
Zone 6b also. This spring beet greens were up first. They must have been missed in the fall. They wintered over. No beets but lots of greens cut young every other week for salads. Fall time: We top garden with DIY compost then top that with 3x's chopped fall leaves. I didn't even see greens when we put garden to "bed". I'll be sure to plant beets early winter as well as Sept. Oct. Nov. Brussel Sprouts, Lettuce and Basil are started from seed and waiting transplanting. More carrots will be planted.
