I have several kinds of panicle hydrangea in my yard but the ones that never flop are the old-fashioned Pinky Winky. No matter how I prune them, they always hold the blooms upright. I agree that the Strawberry Sundae is a floppy mess. Mine is about 7 years old. I have tried several ways to prune it and nothing works to hold it up even with no rain on it. I am considering taking it out.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment! Your information is very helpful. The Pinky Winkies I saw on my garden tour were all beautiful. I am sorry to hear about your experience with Strawberry Sundae.

Oh man...I just planted Strawberry Sundae on either side of the bottom of my driveway two weeks ago. They're looking really nice, but the flowers are heavy and starting to get a little droopy. I've been using a bamboo stick to prop up the one that's most heavy, and I have a feeling I'll be using some hopefully very subtle twine before they fully bloom

Strawberry Sundae will be less leggy in full sun. Strawberry Sundae and Limelight do very well here in WI. I'm in zone 5a. Here, we call Endless Summer, Endless Bummer. They will grow, but most years will not flower or have very small blooms. Panicles tend to do best. It's usually better to look for zone 3 or zone 4 plants in my experience.

I love Firelight but I just bought Flare and love that one too. Flare has thick reddish stems and the flower reminds me of Pinky Winky but the shrub is much smaller. I don’t like the Quick Fire because in zone 6, I don’t like its blooms in September. Even my husband said my neighbor’s Quickfire blooms looked dead. I think it’s important to look at the blooms throughout the season before choosing. Thanks for a great video!

Thanks of much for sharing! You are absolutely right, it is a great idea to see what hydrangeas look like all season in your neighborhood. Good luck with your new flare! I will have to look for that one at my nursery!

Hi, I’m in zone 7 I been growing limelight hydrangeas for years. No one yet has explained to me how to stop them from bending…Help!

The "best practice" that is supposed to help is to cut your branches back by 1/3 at the end of the growing season or in very early spring to help strengthen the branches. Some people swear by this method, others say it didn't help. You can also add some supportive stakes. You can also try twining some branches together for support. Gently gather the overhanging or drooping branches together to lift them up. Next, take a soft and flexible garden twine or plant tie, preferably green or brown to blend with the foliage, and wrap it loosely around the clustered branches. Be careful not to tie it too tightly, as you don't want to damage the branches. Secure the twine in a simple knot, leaving enough slack to allow for some growth. Ensure the twine is positioned below the heavy flower heads but above any weak points in the branches. This will help provide support while preserving the natural appearance of your Limelight hydrangea. Check the ties regularly throughout the growing season and adjust them as needed to maintain proper support. I hope that helps your lovely Limelights!!

Try limelight Prime. Slightly smaller than limelight, and has straight sturdy stems. You won't be disappointed!

@@uptosomething6271 Just purchased this Spring and it's doing great! Prime won't get as tall as your traditional limelight, about 2 feet shorter, and the stems are more upright and stronger. I mixed mine with Boxwoods for a more formal garden. Hope this helps!?

My 3 Firelights (a few years old), 1 Berry White (Jun 2023) & 3 Little Lime Punch (2022) have stiff, strong & sturdy stems...no flopping even in rain. The 1 Zinfin Doll (Jun 2022), 4 Vanilla Strawberry (Sep 2022) & 2 Diamond Rouge (Jun 2023) are more floppy. I need to get a few more, but unsure which ones I want.
