I’m learning so much about clematis. I killed my first one… but I’m going to try again! I do wonder if I made the mistake of purchasing a plant with only one shoot. It was pretty in the pot, but lasted about two months after planting. I amended the soil, I shaded the bottom, I mulched… 🤷🏻♀️
I hate to be contrary but I’ve planted many clematis and have never planted them deeper or tied them up like that and have always had great results with a little compost and full sun and making sure to keep their little feet cool. I’ll post picture of my babies her in Colorado if I can.
Excellent info- I would have planted it high like most plants to encourage the drainage. I have a customer wanting one and was unfamiliar with them so I'm glad I watched the video.
Thanks a lot love and hello from london UK i have just planted a clematis and need to replant it because of the depth of planting i did i need to plant it a bit lower. all the best
Snow Queen Clematis I got from Lowe’s does good in zone 5b-6. The fall leaves are a good cover and feed for the roots. I don’t remove them. I’m going to plant a cover crop around them. I may plant Hairy Vetch bc it climbs fences and is a good pollinator. Vetch also likes cold weather. I get these seeds from Johnny’s.
Sweet autumn clematis can be invasive. I have several along my fence and I've found them trying to grow in my front yard. They grow like wildfire once the weather gets warm.
I was wondering, don't you have a picture with the evolution of planteo clematis, I say this because I noticed that the video is posted in 2015 and today we are in 2020. It would be great to see his progress. Thanks.
The planting depth you mention should only apply to Viticellas and Large Flowered varieties according to the International Clematis Society. All others should be to the same depth as in the pot in which it arrives as some varieties will die if the crown is buried.
I have 18 diff.clematis around my garden , found this video enlightening , what is the general rule in pruning these so that the plant & its flowers spreads width wise rather than it ends up with flowers at the top end , please advice , thank you
Hi I was told if the clematis blooms before June hardly prune. Clematis that flowers after June can be cut back alot (after flowering) pruning and cutting back helps the green leaves & flowers grow closer together. I hope this helps ❤
Not all clematis like the deep planting , depends on the group , please Google the type you have , some crowns like to be dry . Also if it flowers before June don’t prune .
I got a clematis that is pink, and I'm so exited. I just hope I don't kill it. So, I will be looking at your video, so I don't kill it. Thank you for the information. Oh, I don't have the nutrients that you have, can the kind for grass, will it be ok?
I live in Bryan Texas, and you don’t find any Clematis here, so I order two from Walmart, but some one told me that clematis don’t survive here do to our water it has too much chlorine, and I would have to get rain water only, do you have any suggestions for me? Also what’s the fertilizer you used?
Hello, just bought my 1st Clematis! I was wondering if Clematis prefers to be planted in a pot or in ground? I'm in the northeast if this helps. Great video by the way very informative, Thank you!!
A clamatis vine should always be supported with a thin, small diameter type wire trellis.. never thick wood board trellis as you are using here in the video. The vine will not be able to support itself.. always use small diameter structure for support.
