Planting a Container-Grown Tree 

It's important to loosen the roots before planting a container-grown tree -- and don't plant your tree too deeply! If the roots were growing in a circular fashion around the inside of the pot, they could continue growing around in a circular direction when you put the tree in the ground. This can eventually lead to the formation of stem girdling roots that cut off the normal flow of water and nutrients in the trunk -- which can lead to slow decline/death of a tree. Here horticulture consultant Emily shows how to loosen the root ball and look for the root flare in preparation for planting.
