Planting a Giant Topiary!

I cheated in my garden. I planted a Boulevard Cypress topiary. One could make and shape their own topiary and it would take years. Instead, I planted an established one to create a statement in this area!

When planting a tree or shrub:
Dig a hole roughly 2x the size of the container.
Scarify and rough up the roots to help stimulate new root growth.
Place in the hole with the root flare just above ground level.
Add back the soil and tamp lightly.
Water well to get rid of any air pockets.

W👀W, that beautiful Cypress topiary is gorgeous! I've decided to prune one of my hydrangeas shrubs into a tree form (standard) this year. Kaleb, I wish I could find an evergreen that is already pruned and trained, like the one you just planted, at a reasonable price. It seems that the prices, and availability of quality shrubs and trees, have skyrocketed in the past few years. I'm looking forward to your next garden-related video. I love Kip's sploot right on the grass! That tree is beautiful. Did you roll the root ball into the hole? It looks so heavy.

Would you need to add some starter fertilizer to the hole? I don’t see you do that step or is Iowa soil just awesome dirt!

I would've but Caleb doesn't seem to use much fertilizer and his stuff looks great, so probably a personal preference.

Caleb said in a previous video that his soil is rich and doesn’t need to be amended. He said that if your soil isn’t as good, then definitely amend it by 50% with compost.
