PLANTING AEONIUMS: HOW TO DO IT & THE BEST SOIL MIX TO USE.
Aeoniums are fascinating succulents which grow in different in different shapes, sizes & colors but all in a beautiful rosette form. Planting aeoniums is easy but they do prefer a different mix. Here's the blend I use.

Aeoniums are those wonderful succulents which grow in a variety of colors & sizes but all are rosette shaped. I love them! If you look into the head of an aeonium, it’s almost mesmerizing. Planting aeoniums in containers is similar to planting other succulents but it’s best to use a different soil mix.
I moved from Santa Barbara, an idyllic haven for fleshy succulents, to the Arizona desert 2 years ago. Aeoniums are known to not do well here. The ones I have been doing good (not bad but not great either) & look better in the cooler months.
I bought the ones you see here as cuttings & it’s a wonder they’re even alive. I’ve had them in the same shallow, rectangular planter that I planted them into soon after the move. The soil was down by half - shame on me!

Thank you so much! I just got a few cuttings from a friend's house in California. I live in zone 8A in Texas. It was indoors in my sunroom, but it was too hot in there. Now it is outside in a protected shady area that gets morning sun. I just need to get some succulent mix.

Hi Nell, the Aeonium arboreum atropurpureum (correct spelling?) is absolutely awesome, stunning! I have two plants, and they lose some of their dark coloration during the winter season, but in the summer when they are on the balcony the black tinge comes back. Actually, even here in Germany they react quite grumpily to the summer heat when they are exposed to full sun. This discovery came quite as a surprise to me last year, as I was under the impression that they would love the central European summer sun. But no! After a few hot days they began to suffer, and I had to move them into bright shade where they recovered within a few days. I grow my Aeoniums in a mix of peat-free container soil, sharp sand and a mix of pumice, lava and zeolith. They spend the winter months indoors under grow lights; and here in Germany they grow very slowly. Central Europe is just not their climate zone. Thank you for your beautiful videos and your expertise. Happy gardening! All the best from Berlin to the Arizona desert. Marc

@@yeohterrence8593 Hi Yeoh Terrence, I wrote about the mix in my post. In terms of watering I use demineralized water and not the very hard tap water we get here in our city. My Aeoniums spend the summer on my balcony which faces south-west, but they want to be protected against the sizzling heat of the sun in the hottest months. They are fine with the spring and late-summer sun, but July and August are those months when they like to be shaded. In terms of fertilizing I fertilize them once every month with a balanced liquid fertilizer (N-P-K 4-5-6), which I dilute to a quarter strength. As soon as temps drop below 12°C I move them into the house. They spend the winter under grow lights at 20°C. And I give them 12 hours of grow light and 12 hours of darkness from October into March / April. As soon as night-time temps reach a minimum of 12°C I move them out on my balcony where they spend the summer. Hope this helps you. Happy gardening and enjoy your Aeoniums! Best wishes from Berlin to Berlin. Marc

Marc Mattulat tq for your prompt reply. I just cut many stems from the big plant to propagate them. Hopefully it will be a success. Mine is aeonium velour. Green when I first got it and turned dark purple u Dee the sun. Would love to collect different kinds of aeonium but it's hard to find in Berlin. Where do you normally get your succulents

@@yeohterrence8593 Hi, Yeoh Terrence! I find most of my succulents at Bauhaus (Halensee), Kölle (Havelpark or Teltow), or Rothe (Clayallee). Best wishes! Marc

These look amazing :) Your plants always look so lush, even in the arizona desert! :D Do you have any tips for growing these indoors in the midwest? Most people I know have trouble keeping these alive. One person I know from California told me to water them weekly, but oh so sparingly. So far it's working. I just keep buying them and killing them. I think one of mine is experiencing dormancy. Every time I water it even a little, it sheds leaves and looks one step closer to death. I think my more mature ones are stronger, so I'm thinking that matters. Keep us updated on how these are going. Thanks!

Hello there! Could somebody help me please? I bought an Aeonium Arboreum Atropurpureum about a year ago and it just has one Rosette atm. When will it grow those 'side rosettes' or do I need to cut it for this?

Hi Nell . Do you think Coco Loco potting mix , a dash of coco coir and some pumice added would be a good mix ? Just got a big aeonium tree in the mail and wanna make her super happy . Coco loco is made of coir and aged forest products . Plus worm castings , bat guano , kelp meal , oyster shell amd dolomite lime Thanks for the video 🤗🤗🤗

You should of released earlier or later as this time of year- these plants are dormant. Someone watching this may cut the stems and work with them and then die.

JoyUsGarden Hi Nell, When you were living in SB, I was in SD. In 2016, I moved from SD to Oro Valley, just a bit north of you in Tucson. Dont take it wrong, you have followers from all over the world in different climates. It was just a suggestion as succulents have gained popularity over the last few years.
@JoyUsGarden
@JoyUsGarden 6 лет назад
I don't take it wrong at all Sally! I've never come across an aeonium that is deciduous. All the growers here in the US list them as evergreen as does the Royal Horticultural Society. Are you thinking of Pachypodiums? They're decidous. Nell
