Love watching the WD do its job. When I was a kid 60 years ago this is the tractor I learned how to plow, disk, and harvest with. Only we had tricycle ones instead of the wide front end. We farmed with both a WD and a WD45.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing someone using a classic tractor for work. They are designed to work and need to stretch their legs like us. We always planted long rows then cross ways to get good seading about the field. We always had a great stand for alfalfa and it kept the weeds to a minimum.

The sight of that ole 2 cylinder and the drill out working in the field just screams America bud. Seeing them old tractors in the field is just nostalgic as it gets

Back in the 80’s and 90’s everyone was planting alfalfa by spraying it on with with liquid fertilizer. Looks like the auto steer still works good on the old John Deere. Straight rows.

About 55 yrs ago we worked the soil , pulled a peg tooth harrow over. Took a J D 70 and J D fbb drill (no grass seeder) dusted the alfalfa in. Did you notice the spikes on the packer , they look like they are running backwards. The picture of the 620 at the begining of the video , the front wheels look like they are 8 or 10 feet apart. What i could of the front tires when you drilling alfalfa , it looks.like the tractor is set on 30" rows.

Really enjoy seeing the older tractors being put to work. 20 years ago my uncle bought my grandpas "59 730 ED on grandmas farm sale. Shortly after he had it painted. I am proud to say it is mine now. I have wanted this tractor since i can remember. I would love to put it to some light work or even run it on the pto dyno. But i need to fix the pto first, it runs continuously.maybe this fall i will work it on the disk or the plow that grandpa brought home brand new with the tractor that was brand new. Dad bought the plow and disk on grandmas farm sale.

I had a drill just like that one. Then started using a 750 notill drill but I was finding the seed from the front set of gangs was getting more dirt cover from the back gangs. So i bought another regular drill. This one is an FB177B. Its the first series of drills John Deere made without the Van Brunt name. The seed box is on back. The best spring seedings I ever got was done with oats. We would combine the oats and bale the straw. I would try to find a cultipacker that you can hook up to the drill to make the best soil seed contact. Good luck with it.

I didn't hear if you did any herbicide treatment or if the alfalfa seed was Roundup Ready but, I think if you have any problems with alfalfa plant population rates, it will be because of weeds. We always used an oats nurse-crop when we were still doing dairy. We found that even if we got our alfalfa in late the oats helped with cover on the broad-leaf weeds. We also sold the grain (or fed it sometimes) and used the straw for bedding. There were times when we took a small hit in hay production for the first year (dry weather usually was the cause) but the higher alfalfa plant populations always made up for it in years 2 and 3. Prior to planting we had our soil tested and fertilized to get our P and K good for what we figured should be about four years for the alfalfa. Hope she grows well for yah.
