Great to the point video. We are creating a privacy fence (S) in our backyard using a screen type trellis, painted dark ( Black, emerald green, brown) and a color variety (White, reds, orange, pink) of climbing roses. The more mature /bigger sized gallon containers from the nursery the better. This is a great plan for soil that is clay hard pan from your original contractor's construction; even if you spent money on new fill dirt, top soil etc to create flower beds (Raised or not). Roses attract a variety of wild life in your backyard also. And are pretty much no care.

the very best tie to use is insulated electric inner cable: wont ever break or rust and can be easily coiled! to perfection. just ask neighbours or friends or family for their unused electric appliance cords and cut open and cut in 20cm handy lenghts. thank you.

Thanks, so easy to understand. I have a question. I have a wire fence, but there is a concrete base, and edge, before it hits the grass area. The concrete on the grass is about 10-12 cm. Can I still plant a climber but then train them back with jute that leads to the wire fence? Hopefully...Thanks for your help!

So am I just waiting on the new main canes to grow up from the ground now? I wish you could do a video on the this aspect of having a climber, as in what to expect & do the first few years.

Thanks for the video . I dint understand the part to not deadhead the bloom on main cane . With bloom there will the cane continue to grow . Should we never deadhead ?
@heirloomroses
@heirloomroses 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for asking. For climbing roses, we say not to cut back your main cane like you would for a shrub or hybrid tea rose. This will allow your main cane to keep growing and produce laterals that will then produce blooms. Here is a link with more information: heirloomroses.com/blogs/how-to-articles/prune-roses-that-climb

I planted a rose bush a few yrs ago. It was pink, and only a few blooms per year. This year, the roses changed to a deep red (very pretty surprise), and is growing like crazy. The original bush was not a climber, but this year, it looks like it is. Since I planted the original rose bush a few feet from the cottage porch, and now it is a climber…. How do I make it climb the railings when it is so far from the porch? Also, there are several main canes that look dead and are heavily thorned. Do I cut them back to the ground, or will they eventually turn green again?
@heirloomroses

But you said only the lateral will produce blooms and at the end you can see lots of shoots coming out of the main cane. Can you elaborate?
@heirloomroses
@heirloomroses 3 года назад
The tip of the main cane may produce a handful of blooms like you see in the end of this video, however the rest of the main cane is going to produce lateral canes rather than more blooms, and those lateral canes will be where almost all of the blooms grow from. It is important not to deadhead the main canes as it will hinder proper growth, which is why we recommend flagging them so you can easily which canes are the main ones.
@RealWomenRealStories
@RealWomenRealStories 3 года назад
@@heirloomroses thank you so much. Does it mean that we have made a mistake cutting some main cains to about 10cm long due to die back diseases? What we have now, are very short main canes and long laterals. So blooms are only at the tip of each lateral. What would you suggest? Waiting for new main canes to go out?

Hi, I ordered some climbing roses last week, I have a wood fence. How do I train these against a fence? Also , I had a climbing rose in my yard, which I pruned without watching these videos and I cut off the main cane at the edge, can I do something about it now ?
@heirloomroses
@heirloomroses 2 года назад
Your rose should be fin. It will eventually have new growth. It just may take more time. To train your rose to a wooden fence is similar to how it is done in the video, but you will attach your rose to the wooden fence panels; this can be done with twine. We recommend tying up the canes on climbing roses. Letting the canes lay on the ground can create more issues with disease and pests, and you are less likely to get blooms from those canes.
