Bare root astilbe should be planted upon arrival in the early spring. Once they’re introduced to heat and humidity they’ll begin to sprout inside the bags. Ideally, I want to get them out of the bags and into soil as soon as possible.
Astilbes prefer part to full shade and rich, relatively moist soil. Bare root astilbe should be planted with the crown of the plant at or just barely below the soil surface. If it’s planted too deeply the plant may rot, but if it’s too shallow the roots may become exposed, and it may succumb to drying out.
Start by loosening the soil to the depth of the bare root itself. Next, place the bare root into the prepared hole so that the crown of the plant is at soil level. Cover it back up with soil, firm it in lightly, and water well.
Bare root astilbe can also be planted in pots. For this, use a nursery pot that’s slightly larger than the root system. Fill the pot with a bit of potting soil so that when you place the root into the pot the crown will be near the top. Then place my root in the container, fill in around with soil, firm lightly, and water it in. Grow these plants inside near a sunny window or under grow lights until you're ready to plant them outside.
Just like all perennials, bare roots will sleep the first year, creep the second, and leap the third. So don’t worry if you only see a few flowers the first year. By year two and three they will be covered in gorgeous blooms. And speaking of blooms, astilbes come in beautiful shades of white, peach, pink, purple, and even red. I love planting them in big, massive drifts so that I have a large show of their beautiful spikey blooms.
Here in zone 6b, southern PA astilbe blooms in late June through July. The bloom color gradually fades to green before eventually turning brown in the fall. You can choose to remove the flowering stocks when this happens or leave them in the garden for winter interest. They also have lovely, ferny foliage that looks good all growing season. And both the foliage and flowers are long lasting in the vase. I love to use the flowers in spiraling bouquets, and I also enjoy drying the blooms for craft projects in the fall.
Astilbe also comes in a wide selection of heights. Since I grow mine for cutting, I always choose the tallest cultivars. But there are also compact, short varieties that work well in the front of a shade border. I guess you could say there’s an astilbe for everyone!

I adore astilbes, such lovely foliage as well as feathery flowers. I have a ruby and white astilbe. As you said the lie and then leap into quite a beautiful display, over a few yrs. I'd love to learn how to divide them to make more plants. Never seen bare rooted ones on sale anywhere.

I haven't grown astilbes in a long long time. I am tempted to add some this year but we are still covered with snow so I shall have to wait. I hadn't thought of growing them for cutting but even though I have been gardening for 40+ years I am new to the cutting garden trend.

Great tutorial! I learned alot and spend a fortune on astilbe plants, usually buying small containers, 4 " pots since I need so many! Longfield Gardens is the brand Costco carries. I have seen the bare roots there.

So happy to see this video though I planted out the ones I purchased from Costco late in Feb [between rain storms and atmospheric rivers]. They are about 6” tall now. Z9b/Sunset z17 in SF Bay Area, east bay hills. They are behind an apple tree and along an area behind a stand of blueberries. About 2 hours of late AM sun and 1 hour of early evening sun. I have had one in a very large pot for several years that has soft pink flowers that gets a few hours of late morning sun.

Thank you for the clarification of how to orient the astilbe. Perhaps this is why I have been unsuccessful so often. I thought the flat woody side was the root!!! Switching topics - Do you recall where you purchased the black arbors/trellises (3) behind where you are standing at the end of the video?

I tried astilbe last year in containers. I totally almost failed. I don’t know what went wrong. I lost 5 to ? I had 4 remaining in a partial shady place. All 4 tried to die on me. I finally gave up on them, walked away and basically said oh well. They all died back soon as we had some cold temps last fall. This spring I’m doing gardening a little different, emptying pots of soil. I’m only doing raised beds this year and only a few container plants. I was about to grab the astilbe pots to empty them when I saw some green in it. Long story short. The 4 I thought were dead are really growing. I’m afraid to even look at them, much less touch them. I’m going to leave them alone. See how it goes.

I would so love to grow astilbe! I tried last year but it wasn't happy under the Maple tree. I'm wondering if it was too close to the trunk (about 3 feet away). Do you think it would do better if it was 5 or 6 feet away? It would still get some shade there.
