In this video, I'll be showing you how I plant carrots in a deep mulch system. I'm using a few different methods I've learned in the past 4 years to try and get carrots to grow. I hope this helps you to grow carrots in your garden!

Interesting method I'm that lazy gardner I mix all my seeds making sure they are compatible plants and just throw them around and they sort them selves out . I end up with a nice crowded garden then mulch well and even on a dry summer I can go with out watering for 3 days . Great video always good to see other people's ideas!

i like to use an empty salt shaker for seed control. Add seeds and shake them out. It works best in larger beds but not much overcrowding.

After 30 yrs of gardening the tilling and weeding way, this year I'm doing your way. I will be making a deep trench around the whole garden as usual though, cause I've heard the quack grass can still be a problem. By digging a trench with a shovel around the outside of the garden, it slows down the grass from creeping in.

I've tried covering carrot with mulch before and got very bad germination rate. I think the mulch was hindering and drowning out the carrot seed. With the cardboard as soon as you see the carrots germinating you can pull it off and let them keep going.

I wish I had seen these videos sooner. I’ve been watching vids on this method for hours now and I’m kinda depressed we have already planted most of our garden this year. We tripled the size due to what’s going on with the virus and a potential fear of food shortage etc. next year I’m going to do LOTS of these beds. I could do a full acre like this I think lol. No weeds! Our problem isn’t tilling...we have a tractor we can borrow to accomplish that pretty easily. My biggest issue is weeds. This is going to be great! I’m actually excited about preparing my beds this fall and I haven’t even harvested this season yet 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

@PaleGhost69
@PaleGhost69 4 года назад
Tilling might be the reason you have so much weeds. Especially if you're tilling the mulch into the soil.
@margaretd3710
@margaretd3710 3 года назад
You might want to hold off on using the tractor. It seems that when you till, you disturb the ecosystem and give the weeds an even better opportunity to grow. Watch some more videos on No Till gardening - there's lots of them on RU-vid. In addition to this channel, I like Charles Dowding a lot and there's many others that are great as well. Best wishes for a great garden!

I use the sand and feed technique as well but one thing I put my carrot seeds and my radish seeds together and then if I pull my radish seeds just the carrots are left the radishes come up quickly and that marks them

mark J Greetings I am glad to see you work hard. I have no issues with your comments except you are not in tune with Ruth's method. Believe me I am no master gardener but please read Ruth Stouts books. Or even just one of them. She would have covered the whole area with Hay. When asked how much hay she says "more". No weeding around the Garden. No watering. That includes how she plants carrots. I do not mean to insult you in any way and wish you the best.
@HonestOpenPermaculture
@HonestOpenPermaculture 4 года назад
Thank you and I understand that. I also know Ruth's gardens were very established. These are not. From someone that has been using her method for a little while it takes quite a few years for your beds to get established in her methods. Everything looks good on paper and in a book until you do it in real life. Out of curiosity how long did it take you to get your Ruth stout beds established?

I know I'm late to the show, but I've heard you can use almost any hay, but you might want to water it, let it sprout and then break it up and let it sit in the sun to kill off the sprouts. Then use. Not sure if that actually works, but with the 'grass' hays, I would be careful that way and just maybe try it in a corner somewhere to see if it does kill off the seeds.
