It's time to plant our dahlia tubers! And we're doing it now in the early spring to guarantee earlier blooms. Follow along as we go through the simple steps to prep and plant dahlia tubers for a head start on the flowering season.
We're growing dahlias from our friends at Blomster Verden: ‪@blomsterverdendanmark‬
They've sent us beautiful colors ranging from Mango Madness and Zorro to Boom Boom White, Capetown, Aphrodite, Wishes n Dreams, Tahiti Sunrise, Ace Summer Sunset, and more.
Here's how we plant ours:
First things first, take a moment to trim off any shriveled, moldy, or dry growth from your dahlia tubers. This ensures they're in top shape for planting. Next, grab your pot and add a few handfuls of potting soil to the bottom.
Then, gently hold the tuber by its stem and nestle it into the soil in the pot. Make sure it's snug but not buried too deep. Then, carefully fill in the pot with more potting soil until the tuber is completely covered, leaving just the tip of the stem exposed.
Following these simple steps sets your dahlia tubers up for success, promising a vibrant and early display of blooms. We'll store them indoors until we're ready to plant outdoors.
Don't forget to subscribe and follow to see what's growing in our garden.

Allen sounds like my husband suddenly asking when our last frost date is because my dahlias are taking up floor space 😂😂😂 Our bedroom has the best light and our toddlers won’t play with the soil there 😅

That is so funny! My husband keeps saying it won't be long before we can put the plants out in the sunroom, knowing full well it's a few weeks away still 😂 Lars is responsible for my seeding out snapdragons, stocks, coleus, zinnias, ranunculus, etc... and now dahlias... 😂😂😂

🤣 It's every year with this husband of mine! haha. Glad I'm not the only one out there. I've at least convinced him to NOT put any other plants in here finally.. that took several years of complaining to accomplish 😅

Such great information. Over the last couple of years I've taken care of my mom's Dahlias and they've been beautiful. As always, your info is spot on. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure they're going to be beautiful this year. :)

Omg, talk about great timing, lol. I have a bunch of tubers to plant out, and I have QUESTIONS! I have one done so far, but now I'm unsure if I keep watering it, or do I wait for it to first have leaves? Do you transplant them into bigger pots when you put them out? I bought the tubers on a whim at Costco to celebrate my husband's successful heart surgery, and now I've gotten grief online because the tubers are from Holland, and they're crap, etc. I decided to keep them in pots in case they do have dahlia gall. These flowers have better be fabulous, considering the problems they're causing me 😂 Costco: always big quantities... 14 tubers! I'll be happy with 5 plants 😁

Lars here... I only water when the ground seems dry (around half of my finger). And if you watered when planting it, you are good for a while. The most important thing is to not overwater. Ours will go from this pot to their final place in our raised bed. Whatever pot you start them in, I'd make sure that it's big enough to hold the tuber and have room for the roots to grow. I hope that make sense! AND a huge congratulations on your husband's heart surgery! It's 1000% worth buying 14 tubers for 🥰. I hope they all grow and show out for you!

@@perennial-garden thank you, Lars! Your advice makes total sense. I also feel better about buying so many tubers 😉😊 Tomorrow is dahlia planting day here. I have lots of very big pots so I'll use those when I transplant them. As I tell my husband, that's why I keep all those pots; it isn't just to take up space in the shed 😁 The seeds were bought when one of my brothers passed away 3 weeks after a cancer diagnosis, at the same time as my husband was in the hospital. Today is his birthday, so I've been sowing and washing pots all day. Gardening is my coping mechanism these days. Thanks to the two of you for all the help. Your videos are excellent 😊🌸🌿

@@Lea-zf7lm You are so so so very welcome. Thank YOU for watching and taking your time to comment and reply! And what a great way to celebrate life -- gardening. That's why the Danish cemeteries (where Lars works) are so well taken care of -- they are places to remember and celebrate the lives of loved ones thru the garden. We wish you nothing but peace and joy as you get to planting!

I think I may have lost all of my Dahlias this year as I didn't lift them and we've had the wettest Winter that I can remember. I suppose I've been lucky in the past as they've always returned. I watch a channel called Cottoverdi and Annette has the most wonderful collection of Dahlias and she's bought a lot of new ones this year so I'm looking forward to seeing them in bloom.

oh no! I wish we lived closer and we'd share ours! We got a whole bunch for free from 2 suppliers here in our area. We're sharing all of ours (the ones we dug up in autumn) to our neighbors and planting all of these new ones. I hope they look as good as the package promises.

@wendybartlett6717 We had the driest winter in Greece. It is really bad for the olive trees. People put fertilizer on the ground but how will it go into the roots if it doesn't rain.

@@youlamatou If we could only pass our weather conditions on to the people who need it. I'd gladly send you our rain in exchange for your sunshine. 😃 I had a wonderful holiday years ago in Corfu and there was a heatwave then. Even the local people were finding it too hot. I remember seeing all the beautiful olive trees and how friendly the Greek people were.

I notice you have a rather large rosemary (?) right outside your living room windows? I am wondering how you overwinter that, does he stay outside all winter? Just as he is? Or with some covering? I am curious because I bought a rosemary in Italy and I've overwintered it for a year so far, I wrapped the pot with bubble wrap and wrapped the plant with frost cloth and keep it near my balcony doors so it gets the residual heat from the glass doors but I am always looking to do less and wondering what other people do! Of course I know it depends on the variety, but I would love if I could eventually plant him in the ground at the property I manage because he is getting really big! lol But I don't want to kill him either. So what do you guys do?
@perennial-garden
@perennial-garden 5 месяцев назад
It's a pretty rosemary, right?! It lives outside alllll year long. We bought it from a nursery -- not the supermarket like we buy we basil and stuff every summer. It's been in that pot the whole time, too. We don't cover it or even water it! Maybe sometimes in the summer if it's crazy hot and dry... otherwise, it lives off rain water. We used very 'bad' soil for that pot -- mostly stones, sand, normal dirt and some potting soil. Nothing fancy at all. I think the great drainage is what helps -- since it is a Mediterranean plant. I'm not sure what variety it is -- but it tastes good on chicken 😂and does wonders with roasted vegetables. We even had this super cold winter and it's doing fine. It even flowers every summer :) (That must be a good sign!) While we can't say for certain that yours will be fine... We can say that we'd try it for sure. The easier a plant can be... the happier we are 😅
@brocktoon8
@brocktoon8 5 месяцев назад
@@perennial-garden Thanks for your detailed reply! I am amazed that a rosemary can survive where you are (which is much farther north than where I am in Zurich) without any winter protection whatsoever! It makes me think maybe I've been babying mine. It also gives me hope that I can perhaps plant it out in the Black Forest where I manage that property, and it will survive. I had been thinking maybe I should create some sort of winter shelter for it but maybe it's not necessary, thank you!

@@brocktoon8 Just give it plenty of sunshine (as much as you can) and poor, well-draining soil. And then... pray it works! haha
