Years ago I bought a light purple chrysanthemum from my local hort society plant sale in May. I don't know the variety but it has spread beautifully and blooms from Sept. till the end of Nov. Bonny zone 5b
That is awesome! It never occurred to me to purchase chrysanthemums specifically to put in the ground, but I'll be adding that to my list for next year - thanks for sharing your experience!
Hello, I live in Ottawa, Ontario. I have a few chrysanthemums that I have collected from my neighbors who was going to throw them out at the end of the season. I have planted them and they have came back every year. The trick is not to cut it back when it all died down. Once you see new green growth in early spring then cut off the dead branches. I usually wait for the green growth to grow a little bit taller before I cut back the dead branches. Hope this is helpful.
I have seen a house nearby with mums that bloom amazingly! It is on my list to get at some point, and try to plant and hope it overwinters as well... once I'm done expanding my garden, it's still in the 'cover with cardboard' stage haha.
I am in zone 5a and I do over winter mums. I have found it true that the earlier you get them in the ground, the better they do. Mine never self seed, but I have 2 that have come back for 6 years! I leave the stalks and cover with leaf mulch after hard freeze happens.
