LOVE Greenstalks! I was hesitant at first, and I purchased a short leaf variety just for back door herbs. But it's done so well, we bought a second version - tier size - and are using it as part of our winter garden plan.

@@BBettaGarden We have family up your way! I've never been as cold as one winter we were up there around the holidays!!! But I've been reading about what's called year-round gardening, and apparently people up in Maine and Canada seem to make it work which is why I'm giving it a go this year. I live in the mid-South where the weather can never make up its mind, but it's absolutely nothing like what you deal with.

Heya Stephanie! I hope your family has a wonderful time here in Chicago. Temps have cooled off so the weather should be really nice for them. Year around gardening is a DREAM of mine! And I know it's possible in Chicago as I follow another Chicago gardener that has pulled it off. I just need to work on my carpentry skills a bit to create the structures :-). Living in the mid-South, you should have great success! P.S. This time of year is the very beginning of me thinking about one of my great aunts who lives in TX now..she insists that Chicago is NOT a place to grow old in. The cold is just too hard on your body :-).

@@BBettaGarden I am in zone 6b. I put the 6ply greenhouse plastic on one of my raised beds and had cabbages and some lettuce survive -14° nights. They are supposed to be able to survive 28° without protection. Just get the plants well established before the freeze.

@@judifarrington9461 Judi! I'm so glad you commented. I was just talking about this with another gardener. Do you remember when you planted the cabbage and had it already formed a head before the frost. I've been trying to figure this piece out for a few seasons.

Hi, I have a green Greenstalk. I've had it for about 3 years. It's great for gardening in small spaces like my balcony in 7b NYC. I'm about to load mine up now for this growing season. A bit of advice, keep an eye on the mint as it is very invasive. It will travel. Knowing this, I put it in my Greenstalk anyway and found out. From this day forward I will always keep my mint in a separate pot. Happy Growing! 🪴

Hey neighbor! What soil do you use or recommend?

Heya Neighbor! For the GreenStalk? The *short answer* 😊, is I dont have a recommendation yet😊. The *longer answer*... I used Miracle Grow potting mix last year (I still have a few bags) and it did fine in the GreenStalk that's in this video. I have other GreenStalks to fill this year and so I'm going to use the rest of the Miracle Grow but I'm also going to use Schultz potting soil (blue bag). I've used Schultz before and I like the consistency a bit more than the Miracle Grow. I also expect to make up my own blend which I use for my other containers (basically 1/3 peat moss, 1/3 compost, 1/3 top soil or garden soil and a bit of perlite.. here's a video in case you're interested ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y_Zjqlw7jsg.htmlsi=5gfPxcTQ6ENR9Zve
