I used Erin’s method last year when she released her video, with very old seeds that I had collected from poppies that had since disappeared. I had an AMAZING germination! I even messaged her to tell her it worked and she seemed especially delighted ! 💚

Hi! About the wisteria: here in England people train them into tree forms about 4-5 ft high and prune them hard. The effect is a weeping tree form of the flowers followed by foliage. Some research into that might enable you to reshape that wisteria into an accent tree. Just an idea!

I would love to see how to do that 🤩 I think I'm gonna check with Google I want wisteria in my garden but I don't want it climbing all over the structures. This should be interesting 🤔 lol

I've had a wisteria vine for over 30 years. It grows over an arch at the entrance to our garden. My husband made the arch out of wood and it's much larger than your typical garden arch, which is fortunate, because the wisteria is very large. Also, I had inter-twined the branches in and out of the lattice on the arch, and over the years it has damaged the arch since the branches are now so large. Be aware that wisteria can be invasive, and they need a lot of grooming to keep them in check. It's not a plant for a casual gardener since it requires a lot of work, but the beauty is well worth it if you are willing to give it your time and attention.

My aunt had been on an English/French garden tour. She came home & rooted 3 new ones to train as you explained. They required some summer upkeep but made lovely small, weeping trees as you describe. I think she used a 4 inch steel pipe with an antique steel wheel (from a plow) as the support system.

On an estate I worked at, we had a huge mess of wisteria by our office.. over time I kept cutting back any growth except for one strong stem, and eventually it became a lovely manageable tree. It's seed pods are also wonderful!

Laura, when I was a child I would pick the dried poppy seedheads that our neighbor had growing in the front yard by the sidewalk. My sister and I used them as salt and pepper shakers in our play kitchen outside. Mom wondered why poppies grew by our playhouse, lol! 🤣😂 I sprinkled poppy seeds outside last year after watching Erin, "The Impatient Gardener. I was delighted last spring with poppy blooms, so two weeks ago I planted more.

I have used a powdered sugar shaker filled with tiny seeds to spread them more evenly. Very effective for poppies, alyssum or any small seed.

Hi. I am 70. I can remember my mother telling me that her mother always planted her poppies in the snow. You are the first person I have heard of other than my grandmother to advocate planting poppies in the snow.

I tried this 2 years ago and it worked. It’s the only time I successfully grew poppies from seed. I waited too late last year, but just got some seed in the mail and will be tossing them outside this week. Thanks for the reminder.

I love this natural flower maven planting method!! No fuss, no muss, no stress and come Spring what a show you’ll have!! We’re digging out from 20+ inches of snow here on the East End of Long Island (NY/7A) - maybe just a little too deep to try this method today! 🤣 But I love snow because I know it means come Spring my garden will be thriving!! Hi Thea! We're practically neighbors, I live in southern RI but a zone 6B. We didn't get quite as much snow as you guys did, I think you took the brunt of it. But I'm with you, I think I will wait until the snow melts a little, I hate getting snow down the top of my boots! Oh and I've always envied your zone 7A rating, so close but yet so far 😂

Hi, Laura and Mom! Can't wait to see how the poppy project comes out- it will be stunning! Used your technique to plant red poppies along the side of the garage. They've bloomed for years! We have an easement with the neighbors, and he owns a greenhouse in town! So, we kind of have joint backyards so it doesn't look weird. How lucky I am! They have a huge wisteria growing over their screened in front porch-smells so good, but the bees! Scared of bumblebees! 🐝 What its it about chickens that always makes me smile? Sure miss them now that we're living in town. Have a pair of yellowthroats that always come back to the old wrenhouse in the snowball bush- looking forward to that! Thanks for a great vid! 🌱🌸😊💗🐓

Hi Laura, funny story I had a milkweed pod I found last summer and decided to pull off the seeds from the fuzz to put in fridge with for cold stratification! When I went to put the rest in a baggie, all the fuzz flew out and stuck to my face and floated around my kitchen for quite a while! My Westie Sam and I started sneezing and rubbing the tickly fuzz off our faces! Lol! What was I thinking!!! The rest will be heading out with me today to my wild flower garden to lay on the snow and do it’s thing! Thank you for sharing, splitting my poppies between jugs and sprinkling in the snow today! I have a California Rainbow mix from Baker Creek and Mother of Pearl from Park Seed! Thanks for saving me some time, space and energy! ❤️🤗

What a great idea and I'm looking forward to seeing lots of pretty poppies. My grandmother used the milkweed pods to make Christmas ornaments with all of us. It's a great project for kids. We used velvet material scraps to line the inside and then glued a miniature figure or tiny object into each half of the pod. We'd also line the edges with gold or silver ric rac. We've made the manger scene for a small tree. The possibilities are really endless.

I’m hoping y’all get 100% germination! I started poppies in the jugs two weeks ago, and they’ve all come up! 🤦🏾‍♀️ I am in zone 8a and I over seeded because I haven’t had luck with germination before. Unbelievable. It’s gonna be a beautiful spring!🥰

It warmed my heart to see you spread the seeds on top of the snow. My Grandfather taught me to plant grass that way when I was a small child. He and I would go over the lawn in the beginning of February and throw out grass seed all over the yard and then wait to see how evenly we seeded the lawns come Spring/Summer. He believed that it was the best way to seed grass. Thank you for bringing back those great memories.

@@budupgarden6109 Yes, I just throw it on top of the snow and it will get to the dirt when the snow melts. I try to get it evenly spread, but it doesn't always come out that way! LOL! Just takes practice. Good Luck!

We have a tendency to complicate things when in nature no one puts the grow lights and yet plats reseed themselves and multiply one way or another, that's how God created them! You will have glorious poppy show!🤗❤🤗

Hey Laura hope your having a great day. Idea for your Wisteria, you should have someone build a strong iron support for the Wisteria so that you can train it to look more open like a tree.

Though not the oriental poppies you are planting, I did the same sowing technique with California Poppies scattering them over a mulched flower bed. The riot of bright orange poppies with their blue-green fern-y foliage was breathtaking!

I tend to sprinkle most of my seeds wherever I want them to grow in a wild, unstructured way. I love the way they come up - almost like nature intended it. I l hope all your poppies come up!

We had a puppy we were raising, and he dug up all my bulbs, flowers, but my tree all over, and dig up the dirt so the roots are now exposed! I don’t know what I’m going to do, except try to sow more poppies and plant other bulbs! Aaahhh!

One year I Bought some " opium type" poppies at the big box lumber/hardware/nursery, and planted a few feet back from my koi pond. For many years I enjoyed the poppies that reseeded ... until we sold the house. I have also had success with "my" refrigerator method: couple weeks in refrigerator, couple weeks in freezer (28f), couple weeks back in fridge. Planted in garden end of March. I'm in Piedmont of NC. Many years we do not see snow, or just one small snow.

I missed our fall poppy seed-spreading window in zone 7b, NC, so when we got snow a couple weekends ago I decided to try Erin's method. I have no idea if they'll get enough cold before we warm up, but it's better than having my poppy seeds languish another year in a box. Plus I loved how I could see the seeds against the snow and know if I was getting decent distribution. Fingers crossed!

You could always do what I did: fridge method. I only had them in moist soil in the fridge for one week and they germinated. They’re just about ready to transplant outside (I’m 9b), and they’re much bigger than my direct sown seeds (cascaded in November because I miraculously remembered). I’m a wee bit concerned about transplant because they have a tap root, but darn it I want to be flush with poppies this year. 🥰

Same here on the shore in Maryland. I did mine back then, but the snow had melted, pretty sure the snow doesn't really matter, probably the cold that does. We got another 6" Friday - Saturday, don't know about you but that hasn't happened here in 15- 20 yrs. Good luck with your Poppies.!

I too watched Erin sow the poppy seeds in the snow and last winter I did the same; they were beautiful! I will be sowing more shortly.

I cannot wait to see how this turns out for you. I live down here in 7B where poppies are not fond of growing. Is it possible, yes. Do they like it, not really. This is going to be a really treat to see it work where they prefer to grow.

Works great. I used Erin’s method last year and it was the first time I ever successfully grew poppies. I had success on the winter sowing too. 🌸 The breadseed were the only variety that worked for me here, however.

i loved erin's video on poppy germination, AND her results! i don't usually wait until snow is on the ground, i scatter in the fall, and i get crazy amounts of poppies. erin's method is perfect though, and a wonderful winter project ❤️

last year i got the most joy in the garden from watching bumble bees work the california poppies that i have volunteered everywhere. the bees where so focused on the necter that they would force open the flowers in the morning, by mid mourning i swear they were drunk flying around.

The poppy sowing set a new level of fantastic for winter sowing. Fabulous that you learned from Erin and then taught us. I wasn't yet subscribing to Erin back then. I love the community of gardeners.

Hi Laura, Not a poppy question, but like you I don't like to wear gloves when I garden. My nails constantly have dirt under them (haha). Wondering if you had a soap and hand lotion you like to use to keep your hands soft, if that's even possible being a gardener. Thank you for this channel. It is the highlight of my day to watch it and even my kids look forward to watching with me as they try to see if they can spot Russell. We stopped by your parents nursery last year on our way to an Oregon coast vacation. We met your Mom, Dad, and Sister and they were just as lovely in person as you see on your videos. Please never stop producing videos. I have learned so much from you.

Thanks for your inspiring videos Laura, I really love them. I grow Iceland and Peony poppies here in South Australia but have never found they needed the chill factor. Mine self seed a lot but I also collect the seeds to plant and give away. Their germination rate is fantastic so I always need to thin them out. Sometimes I mix the seeds with some dry soil or potting mix. It makes it easier to spread the seeds a little further so you don’t end up with dense clumps.
