when we owned our home , my joy in life was gardening, lots of gardening! As life goes on and we move into “ our senior years” and are now renters, I noted I was becoming depressed. Not realizing it was because I wasn’t gardening anymore, then I meant you Laura. Watching you with all your pot planting & groupings at an entrance way ,I too realized, I could do that, and did ! My new neighbors complemented me on how much joy they are giving them. THATS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS MISSING! So once again, THANY YOU FOR SAVING ME!!🌷🌻🌾💐🥀🌹

If you have any younger neighbors with yards that seem to have gotten into gardening during the pandemic, they would probably love someone to accompany them once or twice a week to learn from! Or even do a container planting day with your apartment neighbors and all start together at a local garden center for supplies, and bring them home to teach them potting up at the apartment complex for everyone to decorate their front entrance!

Another Genius idea Laura! THANK YOU. I think you just made my tulip dreams come true. I sort of gave up on tulips due to deer and rabbit (I think even the skunks dig them up) but I save ALL my nursery containers (always using them) I think NOW I can plant up tulips in the plastic nursery container, keep them in our boathouse and garage (which is chilly like outdoors, but deer and squirrel proof) and have tubs of Tulips to try and consider WHERE I can display them in Spring. Wonderful , looks like I'm going out to see what Tulip bulbs are on markdown at our local garden centre! Thank you again. Hurrah Tulips!

I just did this two weeks ago as an experiment. I planted 115 bulbs in medium pots, then sunk those into my xl pots on my deck. They’ll be gorgeous planters in early spring and I can pull out the pots to plant annuals without disturbing the bulbs when they’re done! If I want, I can pull the pots out when they’re blooming and bring them indoors inside a showy container. For once I beat Laura to the punch, but I’m so delighted she’s endorsing this process. I wasn’t sure if it would work, but Laura says it will. Yippee!!!

Awesome idea! But what zone do you live in? I'm in 6A and I'm planting bulbs for the first time. Need all the advice I can get as far as overwintering them. I'd like to leave them outside but in Ohio temps easily get below freezing lots of snow at least a few times during the winter so I'm not sure if they will freeze in the plastic containers...? Do you wrap your containers if you live in a wintery snowy climate and cover the top? I have had one pot with Asiatic lilies that have come back without me even trying after being left out on my deck in the corner so they were protected but still got snow and freezing temperatures. I'm not sure what type of protection I'll need for the bulbs but guessing they are not as likely to come up as they are susceptible to bulb rot. Any tips anyone can give me for Zone 6A with freezing and below freezing temperatures with unpredictable amounts of snow would be helpful. I would love to be able to look forward to a beautiful spring show for the first time so thank you!!!

@@sheilathompson7105 Hi, Shelia: I live in Northeastern, OH and I have potted up tulips in my black recycled plastic pots over the last several years. The first year, I planted them up, throughly watered them in, and placed them in the garage. They came out full and lush. The second year, I didn't get them into the garage until after it dipped below 29 degrees and I lost quite a bit of bulbs to rot. This year I am experimenting again. I've wrapped my large faux Savannah urns in bubble wrap and placed a piece of packing styrofoam on top to prevent the soil from getting wet and frozen. I probably won't be brave enough to leave the urns out; but for now, it gives me a little more time to make room in my garage.
@Talk2Barbara
@Talk2Barbara 2 года назад
@@sheilathompson7105 I’m in 7a in NJ. The daffodil and tulip bulbs actually need those cold winter temperatures in order to form their flowers. Cluster them with your asiatic lilies and they’ll be happy. And they need moisture to survive so don’t cover them. As long as the pots have drainage they will grow as well as any of the bulbs in the ground.

But the containers did beautifully. I haven’t planted any this year yet, but might try using leftover nursery pots this way. They can stay in the unheated garden shed over winter. It’s worth trying! It's been a long time since I've done tulips,daffodils, hyacinth, usually hyacinths in the house paper whites, Amaryllis,so I just went crazy getting different bulbs from different sources,it will be interesting to see the outcome.Today was extremely cold and yes I was out 5 hours planting bulbs,dressed warm and my husband came to get to stop at 7:10 and it snowed for a few minutes.I am going to try planting in containers, I 've always loved the look of flowers in beautiful containers, it's just the best look,especially on my porch,I really enjoy about all 50 ft,broke my leg right before summer so ordered a lot from different nurseries that delivered, nice experience, not as fun as going in person, finally got to do that as well.Love visiting different nurseries all over,it's something a friend and I started doing years ago,like going to museums,we go to different garden centers.Thank you for all your wisdom of container gardening, you have inspired me~A 6a🌷🌷🌷

Best advice I ever heard about planting bulbs was on Martha Stewart many, many, many yrs ago. She had Becky on from Brent & Becky's bulbs, Becky said if you aren't sure what's the top, plant them on their sides, the bulb will know what to do, and you won't risk planting them upside down.

Certain plants probably won’t make it through the winter, plus I had a spray painted stick centerpiece which I probably won’t keep in spring. A store near me was selling little baskets of color coordinated bulbs for a good deal so that’s what I picked up. (They had different options but I picked up the one that was daffodils, tulips, and irises in shades of purple, yellow, and white, but they also had monochrome yellow, pink, or orange sets. They were perfect for containers.) I’m excited to see how it comes up in spring!

Just dug up some bulbs my grandmother planted about 50 years ago. It was interesting, they were very close like you are planting today but they had layers. So as I pulled them out it just got deeper and deeper with bulbs. It looked as if you could mimic this by putting in the bottom then layering next with bulbs in between the grow points below. The hole had about 4 or 5 layers. They had made a beautiful large clump of flowers in the spring. I ended up with 6 large containers. Thank you for the advice about the water needs and possibility of rot. I may cover half of the containers and leave half open to the weather in hopes some make it through the winter. Love all your advice Laura!!! I have learned so much since finding your channel.

I'm a little paranoid about losing tags so I would have labeled the pot itself. I know you've planted a lot of these tulips in years past but the cohesion of colors from the last several varieties you mentioned made me sigh. The pink, yellow, peachy colors are both so joyful and calming.

I haven't seen this asked yet and it's about fertilizer. Do you ever use your chicken's litter and manure anywhere? I have been putting mine at the end of summer in my raised beds once they are cleaned out. We have the "mosh pit" where everything goes when we clean out the coop and it turns into the best compost. I do use bulb tone when planting my bulbs. I enjoyed watching this video, good idea using those containers. I'll have to try it! 🌷🌷🌷

Many years ago my partner's great grandparents owned a smaller scale working farm in KY. He told me when he was young the best tomatoes he ever had were planted in areas that had been fertilized with chicken manure. To this day, he refuses to eat tomatoes because they don't taste as good. Maybe it's just an excuse not to eat tomatoes 😉 Anyway, your comment reminded me of that story.

I've seen all her videos and know she uses Espoma products but was just wondering if she ever uses all the fertilizer her chickens make anywhere in her garden. I guess I wasn't very clear with my question. 🐔🐔🐔

@@karentorbert5646 You do have to be careful with chicken manure, it’s considered very “hot”. It will burn plants if it isn’t composted first. In my area, it is very dry, so I need to compost it for a year or two before using it. If you get a lot of rain, it might be ok to put on your beds in the fall.
@karentorbert5646
@karentorbert5646 2 года назад
@@cynthiafisher9907 I let mine set for at least 6 months or so and so far it's been ok. We get enough rain so that's not a problem.

I am like you. I try to save all my pots that plants come in. The tiny ones I use to start my seeds. So much easier and cheaper to use the used containers. I always clean them out really well after I have taken the plants out of their containers. I have so many pots I need to buy more plants. Hahahaha

I like your tastes in bulbs! Last year I had many of the same varieties (Akebono, Tom Pouce, BlushingLady, etc), they are so beautiful!! I had many compliments from neighbors! I wish it was because of my gardening talents, but Colorblends just has a really good product! You know they're great when a car stops to ask if you are "the one with the tulips"! I hope my front garden becomes a garden that neighbors seek out for some spring cheer!

It’s nice to have some that you don’t put in landscape and just grow in pots as a “cutting garden” , that way you can keep the aesthetic of what you planted in the soil, while still having loads of flowers to pick from to cut and make arrangements with for your home . I save my empty cans too , people call me crazy , but look how much they come in handy all year !!! Thanks for another great video ....looking forward to your Spring show !!!!

I did lasagna planting in pots for last year & hoping they come back next year. They were amazing and lasted for months with each bulb kicking in at a time. This year I will probably plant them out when in flower as I will do new for the following year. At this moment as it is so mild in the UK. We have had crocus finish already and in the ground & pots, other bulbs progressing well.

It was really helpful to see how close they can be planted. I was worried I'd planted my container bulbs too close together but now I'm thinking I could have added more! I have done quite a few of them lasagne style though so they should still be nice and full.

I was so glad to see that you were re using your containers from previous plants. Until I got my planter boxes assembled and situated I started my tomato patch in them and ended up not moving them to the planters. Was so much easier to move the plants around as the season got hotter and trying to figure out where the plants would be happiest. This is a perfect way if you are new to gardening to see what works and what doesn't without a lot of expense.

Ha! You just gave me the answer I was looking for. It is Dec 23 and I found a bunch of discounted bulbs, in our zone 7a is late to put them on the ground, but I “had” to have them. I thought I could plant them on pots and hold them in a cold part of our house which is the mud room. I wasn’t sure about the watering recommendation, but I understand you said water once well and check to keep slightly wet. Thank you !

all the bulbs i have in my yard from the last few years are because of you, lol ❤ and Colorblends Wholesale Flowerbulbs is amazing! their bulbs - well, all you have to do is just look at the bulbs and you can tell the difference from some of the ones you find at big box stores, etc 🙂 they do chill for you, but this year you had to order a certain dollar amount in order to qualify for that service (it was fabulous for me in socal, where we will never get cold enough for winter chill, lol).... but i only ordered around 150 different kinds and not many tulips since those are such a gamble down here... at any rate, the tulips are chilling just fine with our wine in the wine fridge, lol... they do suggest that you do not put them in your regular refrigerator because some fruits/veggies can cause issues with the bulbs (don't know why)... now i'm inspired to do bulbs in pots, so yup, that's next! i cannot wait to see your spring show!!! it's going to be FANTASTIC!!! 🙂 ❤ thanks for the video!! 🙂 ❤
