THANK YOU FOR POSTING FROM ALASKA!! Great info. I farm in N.C. part of the year. I inherited 40 acres from my parents so I've decided to farm part of the time in my retirement. Great content and visual!

So glad you liked it. That 40 acre farm sounds great! I've also got some good videos on green beans, tomatoes, carrots, and potatoes. If I remember, I believe I list out recommended varities for each state in some of those. Best wishes on your farming!

It went well. Last fall I shot some footage of my harvest, but didn't get a chance to make the video. I should have that video out in the next month or two. Thanks for asking.

Nice fig tree in the background. At least in the U.S., that's kind of a giveaway you live in a climate where sweet potatoes do well. They grow really well where I live, but I prefer white potatoes and wish they grew as well. My frost free cool season in the spring and fall is really too short for potatoes to be anything other than a challenging crop.
@TheHowDoGardener
@TheHowDoGardener Год назад
We had a severe winter storm a few years ago where the temperature dropped down to 1°F, -17°C. The fig tree died back to the ground but has since regrown.
@bobbun9630

@@TheHowDoGardener During the February 2020 storm (Uri), it got to -20F here. I did have some turnips and onions survive. That was an all time record, but 1F happens here around half of all years. I just put in a couple of figs anyway. I expect they'll die to the ground every year, but they're supposed to be able to produce a crop despite that. I guess I'll find out! They're likely to be small enough to protect this winter. Sweet potatoes don't care, of course, as they're not in the ground during the winter.
@TheHowDoGardener

That's too bad about your white potato growing season. Some fresh ones right from the garden are so good.

Do you use fertilizer like a 10 10 10 during the growing season for sweet potatoes? If so, do you have a schedule?
@TheHowDoGardener
@TheHowDoGardener 3 месяца назад
I use one with lower Nitrogen, like a 5-10-10 or 8-24-24

It seems sweet potatoes come intwo growth patterns: Vines and upright. How do I find out how my centennial sweet potatoes will grow?
@TheHowDoGardener
@TheHowDoGardener 6 месяцев назад
Their vines will have a mature spread of 36 to 48 inches with a mature height of about 6 to 10 inches.

beginner question, when to plant?
@TheHowDoGardener
@TheHowDoGardener 6 месяцев назад
You should plant sweet potatoes 2 to 8 weeks AFTER the last frost date for your area. Here' a link to find the LAST FROST DATE for your zip cide: www.almanac.com/gardening/frostdates

I have a new raised bed just for sweet potatoes. We put yard top soil and mushroom compost in it. My sweet potato slips look sick. They aren’t growing and the leafs have turned a rusty color around the green. Do you know if it’s a deficiency of something. My other slips in other areas are growing and looking fine. Thank you
@TheHowDoGardener
@TheHowDoGardener Год назад
Hard to say what the problem may be. Most sweet potato problems are either soil or water related. And since your other sweet potatoes are doing fine, I'd say that's the problem. I would focus on watering them evenly and every day or so until established. Then maybe once or twice a week. Keep an eye on how well that raised bed drains as you do not want the soil mushy. Any kind of fertilizer will just make the vines grow, but no tubers. Hope this helps a little.

Water sweet potato daily? Does sweet potatoe need water that much? I've never grown them before. I know none sweet potatoes rots will rot if i water it daily lol.
@TheHowDoGardener
@TheHowDoGardener Год назад
As long as you keep them evenly moist, not dry, then wet, then dry again they should be fine.

Why wouldn't you tell them to buy the slips at a local garden center?
@TheHowDoGardener

Buying local is always a good option if available. Not everyone is aware they can be ordered online just like seeds. Happy Gardening!

You can use willow crumbles and aloe vera as a rooting hormone instead of chemicals. With due respect, usda approval on chemical additives in food products known to cause cancer should be an eye brow raiser and run rampant in pretty much everything therefore earning the usda as untrustworthy.
@TheHowDoGardener
@TheHowDoGardener Год назад
Some valid points about usda chemical approvals. The product, Rev, I mention here is basically just reed segde, soaked in water, then the resulting fluid is condensed. Water can then be added back in for use. Not necessary, but worked well for me. Happy gardening!

@@TheHowDoGardener first of all, I have no idea what a sweet potato slip is, or didn’t till I had to look it up on another RU-vid video. I needed to visually see what you were talking about and how to do the things you were talking about. I still need to look up when to harvest them. For we veggie growing newbies complete needs to mean complete start to finish. That is one thing I love about RU-vid, visual demonstrations, that is how I learn best, and I suspect others used You Tube that way as well. I did subscribe so I can review other videos you put out, hoping to find more information about gardening. You seem like a very knowledgeable man and are kind in your responses. Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be putting out a seperate video about how and when to harvest your sweet potatoes as well as best practices for storing them. I used to do all of my previous Planting Guide videos with both planting and harvesting information in the same video. Viewers/readers asked for them to be broken out into two videos as planting and harvesting occur several months apart.
@TheHowDoGardener
@TheHowDoGardener Год назад
As far as when to harvest them, right before your first fall frost, or when the vines die.
