This is the first time I have watched your channel, Kim. We have a massive fig tree outside our house and I never knew what to do with the figs until I discovered my husband likes Fig Newtons! I wanted a grain free, low sugar recipe, so yours is perfect. I can't wait to try them.

Yum! Fig Newtons were my favorite cookie when I was a kid. My newly acquired fig trees are only 4 inches tall so it might be a year or two before I am ready to make newtons from fresh figs. No worries. In the meantime, here I come, Sprouts or Costco!

The first Fig Newtons were baked at the F. A. Kennedy Steam Bakery in 1891. The product was named after the city of Newton, Massachusetts, and contrary to popular belief has nothing to do with Sir Isaac Newton.

I mostly followed the written recipe. Here are a couple of things I changed: I used 1/4 cup of sunflower oil instead of applesauce, and I baked the rolls for about 20 minutes at 350f instead of the 8 to 10 minutes (they seemed underbaked at the 10 minute mark). I had no problem using parchment paper. Overall, I think the rolls turned out tasty.

I will have to bake some fig bars/newtons. FYI: for those asking questions about alternate flours, yes, sorghum flour works very well, just substitute an equal amount of the flour called in the recipe & continue with the rest of the recipe. I use freshly milled soft wheat flour with oat flour instead almond flour. And they are soooo good! lol Many thanks Kim & Nelson!

Dr. Esselstyn’s “plant perfect” program for preventing and reversing heart disease advises against nuts because of the saturated fat content, so that may be why some people express concern with nuts. Rip Esselstyn’s “plant strong” program does allow for some nuts, usually walnuts.

Kim, thank you so much for this recipe! I just made them today and plan on making two more batches tomorrow. I’ll freeze some (maybe!). They taste soooo good, just like Fig Newtons I always loved. My husband loves them too (and he is hard to please!). Thanks again for a wonderful recipe.
