I learned that you put grape leaves in your soil to help the crypts grow better and use a laterite substrate base with a stratum/eco complete blend cap. I just used this in my new tank setup. Thanks!

Two months ago when I first watched this video, I was setting back up my larger tanks, after them being down for a couple months, for remodeling projects and, well, letting the tanks dry out because I had, a slight problem with snail leeches that was defying me. Since then, in the last month, I have been letting my crypts and other plants adjust. It's not easy to start over again from scratch, but this video at the time was perfectly timed to keep me going. Thank you again.

I love these plants. I start my plants in a cold water tank and transfer to tropical tank by lowering the temp of the tank slightly and slowly increasing the temp over a week. Works great. Grape leaves. Gotta find some!
@BentleyPascoe
@BentleyPascoe 6 лет назад
That would be the way I would suggest transferring to tropical, but a lot of people just have a tank or two with fish and add later so expecting some melt just sets you up for it.

For the contest, I'm enthralled by Crypts. So I'll give you a My Planted Aquarium story began twenty years ago. I had a 30 gallon aquarium. I new nothing about plants, but we had a great "farm" store somewhere near Exton, PA. I went in and told them I knew nothing about keeping plants, but I wanted to give it a shot. I believe they were Crypt Wendtii Brown, Val, and Hornwort. Knowing nothing about the plants, I just left the crypts alone with a couple Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Inc. Root Tabs. They did wonderfully. I'm not trying to recreate that success with more technology and knowledge than I had then, yet sometimes more isn't better. As a bonus, if the community tab allows it, I'll take a picture of the 20yo box of root tabs for you!

Bentley as I mentioned at some point, I was going through your past videos, picking up plant hints. The grape leaves are a great idea. I am using a red Flourite medium in my shrimpless shrimp tank right now and apparently it is iron rich. My red Ludwigia is doing well as is another pink culture I bought and promptly forgot the name of. I really don't like cleaning the substrate, it comes wet and because it is clay, it is very dusty!!! Well actually muddy. It takes a lot of cleaning. It is not the easiest to set roots in but once you get a plant in, it is pretty darn good! As usual thanks for everything!

Cool water for converting the crypt tissue cultures is a nice tip. I wish I had known that before I spent $30 on a tissue culture of Albida Red. They melted back 100 percent and now I just have to cross my fingers that the someday poke there heads out again.
@BentleyPascoe
@BentleyPascoe 5 лет назад
One note, Albida Red is notoriously tough from TC to keep doing well. Even some of the best Crypt guys out here in Seattle have struggled with that plant - but, don't give up. Sometimes they will wait 2-3 months then recover and start growing new leaves from just the base rosette.

Ive been hesitant about using tissue cultures. They just seem really expensive and the few times I've tried them they've died... I learned that maybe it's because I'm not starting them in a cooler water system. Thanks for the tip, will have to try it out.

I wonder if pink panther is the same as pink flamingo. just took apart one of my wendtii greens so I could put most of one of the plants into my parents/sister's tank and man, SO MANY PLANTS came out of that one clump. The imagitarium tissue culture cup I got had 4 of them, two of them are massive in one of my tanks and one is in another community tank while the last one is in a shrimp tank. That last one is the one I took apart, left maybe a third or quarter in the shrimp tank, and had enough plants to make a nice starting carpet for the 20 tall I gave them. Makes me want to take apart the ones in the other tanks and spread them around
@BentleyPascoe
@BentleyPascoe Год назад
So Pink panther and pink flamingo are effectively the same plant. They were just achieved by different farms. It's the same recessive genes causing the coloration from the same base plant.

Had I known then what I know now I would have put a load of them into the substrate, it's a bit late now. Currently my favorite place to purchase tissue culture plants is aqualabaquaria.com/ They have phenomenal customer service and pay very close attention to TCs before shipment, if it's not going to show up in great shape, in my experience, they won't ship it and they'll get in touch with you to see if you'd prefer to wait or have a refund. Packaging is stellar too (I've bought from them a couple times and just simply love how they do business). Honestly I think crypts are perfect for 10s or 20 Longs, since most don't grow super tall, you can put them in larger, shallower tanks and use weaker light and they'll do well.

Hopefully you see this. I know this is an older video. I love crypts and would like to propagate them for sale at auctions and swaps. My question is how do you remove them from your tanks and prepare them for sale without them melting? Everytime I move them they tend to melt back and regrow.
@BentleyPascoe
@BentleyPascoe 2 года назад
This is more common than you think. What I like to do is take a small bit of paper towel. Get it wet with water from the aquarium and lay the crypt across that, especially the roots so that while it's in a bag, it's still has some humidity and moisture from its original environment. Typically I uproot all of the crypts that I'm going to sell the day I'm going to sell them or no more than the day before. This minimizes the amount of time and stress to the plant and makes it more likely for folks to have success with them.
@fuzzyear6260

@@BentleyPascoe I kind of figured this was the case. That it should be done as close to the sale as possible. I just don't want to be passing off plants that look really bad, lol. I know most cryptos understand melting and that they'll come back. My other thought was to grow, divide, plant into a sale container and wait for them to reemerge for their melt off. Steve Parker anything that is a cyanoacrylate will work. Pat your stone dry and do the same lightly for your plant where you want to glue it to your rock. It cures with moisture so if it cures before it properly attaches to either the wet rock or plant it won’t stick long term.

Bentley Pascoe All thought I guess you might call an old timer. In thy early 70s you had to really look at this from a DIY point of view. I don’t feel old. Lol. I was lucky I had a grand mother that was a greenhouse grower. Half the fun at least for me was that learning curve. I tend to look at the hobby in that way. Before the internet I did do plants for profit. But theses days just for fun. There is value in learning how to do some of theses things. Making your own soil making your own fertilizer. Just thought I would poke you and see the results. You reacted in a good way. Lol. Most don’t lol.

@@ricbrunner3880 A lot of how I approach the hobby, especially in the case of youtube, is to find ways that make things easier for the average aquarist. The old school ways of doing things are very interesting when looking back. My Great Grandmother (women had kids early in my family up until my mom) was breeding Angels back in the 50s. Aquatics runs deep, but I like to take a slightly lazier route and focus my brain power and learning elsewhere. I'd love to dig in on your soil mixture because there's a lot to teach the current generation of aquarists from the way someone like you is doing things. Cheers!
