Jesus man! when Christy Moore lifts that bhodran at the end it's the essence of perfection, a stunning allround performance from the one and only Planxty. Patrick (Ireland).
Amazing footage. Very rare. It would be great to see andy on the late late show these days. I always wonder why he doesn't seem to get the coverage he's still up there with the best of them
No, he was forced to repeat the previous verse's last two stanzas, and was forced to keep silent the rest of the 4th verse. (Ireland was _still_ a theocracy masquerading as a democracy in those days, 1972.) Years later, during the reunion, he was able to sing the offending verses.
As I watch this today, The day Paddy Moloney is buried, Liam passed away a few years, Tony McMahon a few days ago, what a loss to our music,, these great musicians
so trippy, so dreamy, just marvellous. Please check out all Planxty material. this band fused trad Irish folk with psychedelics in a very important way
I Love this music. I Love the way they look. I Love the way that the sense of occasion is deep and serious. It's so very inspiring to witness this that I feel almost angry. So much of what we see and hear today on television is a mockery compared to this. May God Bless all true Artists !
@SAINTARGENTUM777 Exactly what I was thinking! I never knew Planxty untill only recently when my driving instructor recommended me them, and honestly, I can't think of a single group, band or artist in the world that can really surpass them. They are like miniture king Davids!
Andy hasn't forgotten the text. The next bit is; And you said you'd marry me and not deny me If I said I'd marry you, it was only for to try you But bring your witness love, and I'll not deny you They weren't allowed to use this line,as it was deemed offensive in 70's Ireland. I wouldnt call Liam arrogant, hes just a lot more refined than the others
absolutely brilliant! didn't wassaname do this...er.. the girl who did that annoying song that was called 'it's got to be per er er erfect'? she did this song well though..anyone remember her name?
Steeleye Span did this song, yeah? i can hear her singin' it, Maddy P. i think. what the hell's the name of this song? it's We Are Six, or Below the Salt, i think. dont MAKE me open itunes. jk.
Yes, William, it was because of censorship. Like I said: Ireland in those days was priest-ridden; and as was said, they could diddle kids, but God help you if you mention infidelity in a song!
William Sullivan Poor Dónal had to mime the words on account of the censorship, and Liam looks _pissed_ like: "Are you kidding me? We have to censor a song like this? In _England_ , we can sing this uncensored, but in our home country we have to shut up about this????"
That performance makes me want to take a huge shit on Mumford and Sons or Bright Eyes or any other poser boyband who thinks they are making folk music.
Dae Dalus I dont think anyone, including Mumford himself, thinks they are making folk music. Just because a band has a banjo player does not mean they are attempting to do folk or bluegrass.
2:49 Andy forgets the words, 2:50 Donal instantly realises, 2:52 Donal turns and says 'Witness' to Andy, 2:54 Andy sings the last verse, awesomeness is resumed.
Andy had made a hames of the words well before that and seemed to have given up. Donal was mouthing the words to himself after Andy stopped singing. They carried on with the instrumental break, and THEN Donal prompted Andy as he realised he needed it! Great professionalism- nothing was obvious unless you really know the song.
Planxty was an will always be an amazing composition of talent and imagination. The composition of the obtruse instruments is amazing. It is a sound that resonates and vibrates the soul more than the ear. It penetrates the heart and spirit. I love planxty's work and will be forever indebted to their genious.
Isn't it extraordinary that they had to censor some of the words. Seems there were some thing you couldn't even imply on the Late Late Show. "don't you remember when you lay beside me You said you'd marry me, and not deny me. If i said I'd marry you, it was only to try you So bring your witness love, and I'll not deny you."
Interesting that Planxty music never seems dated, we don't realize that the verse had to be missed, because it was 34 years ago...still my favorite planxty song..so powerful, yet they make it look so easy....GREAT!
The mandolin arrangment is awesome with the two. I sometimes try to sing this at trad session but I always forget words. It's beautiful, especially the ending.
Andy Irvine does a nice job on this old English folk tune, collected in Herefordshire. He would have learned it from Martin Carthy or the Steeleye Span album of 1970, which is also worth checking out.
My dear friend Steve Myles gave me Planxty Live 2004 a few years back. Since then the 2 most played albums (out of a few) are Kind of Blue and Planxty Live . My favourite memory is Christmas Eve '97 on the way to a the top of big mounain in North Africa singing various renditions to my fellow climbers. The pity is I left Ireland in '89 with no real appreciation of my musical heritage.
Hi everybody. I have seen Planxty once in my life. It was in Reims (France) in 1976, the band was reduced to two original members, Liam and Andy, and Paul Brady. This very evening, Liam had flu, and he was nearly crimson under the spots, but they gave a very good show anyway. I just missed Christie and Donald, despite Brady real talent !
This fine effort forges naught but a lusty desire to hear more by this marvellous group of musicians. Greetings to one and all from Jarrahnut in wonderful Western Australia.
planxty and ceoltoiri chualann rewrote the whole group playing of irish music. the chieftains bothy band de danann ceoltoiri laighean clannad continued to be inventive and innovative. well done.
A great song of passion, woman scorned and you can feel it in the baazooki and mandolin and beautiful Irish traditional music with a kick!! I love ye lads- brill.
@Farfromhere001 Woops! Sorry to hear of McKs demise. Sort of lost touch with him a while back. Attempted Food of the Gods, but put it aside along with Learys Polotics of Ecstacy?? Just couldnt cope with it! Exchanged a bag of Welsh shrooms a few years back for a book The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross by JM Allegro. Know anything about it? Havent even picked the thing up in 8 years!
A bodhran is the flat, Celtic drum, held in the hand by the cross pieces and played with a flat, paddle-like stick. To be left in the lurch is a common expression meaning left in a bad way, left holding the bag, by a person not taking emotional, financial or personal responsibility.
