This song and the instrumental at the end is like a transporter....thank you so much for this amazing arrangement. I am 59 years old and it still does a job on my heart and soul as it did when I first heard it at 18, mind blowing!!! I eventually became a Trad. junkie.
Shame that there's no tab for the mandola and mandolin parts of this song - the arrangement is just lovely and to see what the actual notes are would be fantastic
How did Andy Irvine and Donal Lunny develop this language? I can weave melodies a bit but I would never think to do what they're doing here. It almost sounds greek. Did Andy Irvine bring back the hungarian thing or????
Bhí gabha ag suirí liom Bhí gabha ag suirí liom naoi mí is tuilleadh, Do ghoid sé uaim mo chroí, is scríobh chugam litir, Lena chasúr ina ghlac, sé bhí cliste cróga, Is dá mbeinnse le mo shearc, bheinn beo go deo deo. Chuaigh mo ghrása amach sna goirt, mar rós a ghrua, Chuaigh mo ghrása amach sna goirt, agus pósae fuair, Is eagal liom go mór, go ndófar é faoin ngrian Is dá mbeinnse le mo shearc - mo ghrá go dian! Tá scéal ait ón gcoigríoch, scéal ait i ndomhnach, Scéal ait a deir go bhfuil mo ghrása pósta, Ní féidir an duine a thrust, táim fágtha anseo is mé tréigthe Mura mbeidh mo ghrá agam, ní raghad le héinne. A blacksmith courted me nine long months and better, He stole my heart away, wrote to me a letter, His hammer all in his hand he looked so brave and clever, And if I was with my love, I would live forever. My love's gone across those fields with his cheeks like roses, My love's gone across those fields gathering sweet posies, I fear the scorching suns will shine and spoil his beauty, And if I was with my love, I would do my duty. Strange news is come from abroad, strange news is carried, Strange news is come to tell that my love is married, There is no truth in man, nor in father nor in brother, And since I have lost my love, I will seek no other.
@32GaugeSlug Ah, I see. Do you think of people like Ewan McColl? Or let's say, the former Choir of the Red Army? I leave Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie apart, for they who were/are American. Or are you just on a little Anders Behring Breivik trip?
Do you know where the tune comes from? It was originally a hymn written by John Bunyan in 1684. Because of its popularity, the tune was used by traditional singers. Here's a version of the original hymn: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5yHJMPw8RHU.html Here's a modified version played at Margaret Thatcher's funeral: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5a0otP1BWlU.html Here's an authentic folk version: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zJEaq99HpUU.html I think I'll make a RU-vid video about the song at some point. Out of the 4,869 times this has been viewed (so far), about 500 are just me. :-) I love the voice, I love the Uillean Pipes, I love how all of the guys are 'into' the song. Excellent performance. I just can't seem to hear it enough... along with other Planxty songs.
This song is pure magic! The intensity just keeps building--and the lyrics suggest obsession with the failed romance, and the tragedy of not being able to let go. Then after the lyrics end, there is the long instrumental section that speaks of the obsession, the repetition, dare I say the descent into madness. Just brilliant!
Obsession, not letting go? This is a lot more basic. And it's about rather worse than having been merely spurned. "If I said I'd marry you, it was only for to try you". He lied, she unfortunately believed him, he had her and ditched her. (And later on mocked her, really, for having given in to him. Taunted her, because he knew no one would have believed her if she HAD accused him. ) That's not obsession, just the hard, sad reality of how easy it was to be "ruined".
If you want to here some rare traditional performances of this song, have a look at this video I just uploaded. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-293fUgqyHAw.html
All over is great, yes Dublin is much like any other city around Europe. Having said that there are some nice places to visit in Dublin also. Kerry, Galway, Cork and Waterford are just a few places to see. Beautiful scenery, ancient structures, castles. The west has some great traditional music sessions, there is the Gaeltacht areas where Irish is a first language and English is rarely spoken.........
for a long time I have heard of people saying nasty and totally false things about Bono but those people are very wrong. When any of us has as much as Bono has done then we can stand up and say our bit but if it is insulting or nasty words then you will be wrong again
A blacksmith courted me Nine months and better He fairly won my heart Wrote me a letter. With his hammer in his hand He looked so clever And if I was with my love I would live forever. But where is my love gone With his cheeks like roses And his good black Billycock on Decked around with primroses. I fear the shining sun May burn and scorch his beauty And if I was with my love I would do my duty. Strange news is come to town Strange news is carried Strange news flies up and down That my love is married. I wish them both much joy Though they can't hear me And may God reward him well For the slighting of me. Don't you remember when You lay beside me And you said you'd marry me And not deny me. If I said I'd marry you It was only for to try you So bring your witness love And I'll not deny you. No, witness have I none Save God Almighty And may he reward you well For the slighting of me. Her lips grew pale and wan It made a poor heart tremble To think she loved a one And he proved deceitful. A blacksmith courted me Nine months and better He fairly won my heart Wrote me a letter. With his hammer in his hand He looked so clever And if I was with my love I would live forever
This has nothing to do with politics at all. This music is simply beautiful and whether you are black, brown or white; communist, capitalist or fascist; man, woman or transsexual; heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual. Even if you are pink flying space-hippo, everyone can love such an amazing piece of art. For me, music is what unites people, who are always so divided and if you think communists want to destroy this. You are making a fool out of yourself. Sincerely, an anarcho-communist
It is a common feature in the Gaelic folk tradition for the sex of the singer to be different to the sex of the "narrator" within the fiction of the song. Take Silly Wizard's rendition of "Fear a bhata" as a prime example thereof, or Dervish's rendition of "Bold Doherty".
am a 22 year old University student from the United States, and have been an avid Planxty fan for 10 years. I still get shivers in my spine every time I hear the outro of the piece! Absolutely brilliant.
I am almost fourteen now and these songs just dig up the old memories of my dad singing to me. Folk music has been in my blood for many generations, and thanks to my dad I greatly enjoy and appreciate it. With out him I wouldn't be listening to this great music. To bad my favorite band is already pretty old now and I will probably never get to see them live, but they will alwase be with me. Long live Folk.
This is oh so very amazing. I will have to say I love planxty's instrumentals for this song above any other versions I've heard. Although I prefer Steeleye's steady beat. Between the two lead singers, however, it is a tie in beautiful grace.
THE BEST IRISH BAND EVER old boy! I first heard this music in Mt Isa in Queensland in 1974 and 1975 and it has always given so much of the spirit of Ireland and its fabulous musical history. Fantastic
Kisses from Galiza (Galicia), our ancient and forgotten celtic-suevi nation of western Europe. We are fighting for the liberty. The Breoghain's sons are trying to make a new free state. FREEDOM FOR GALIZA !!! GALIZA CEIVE !!!!!
One of the very greatest rocking bands of all time along with Thin Lizzy, Rory Gallagher, Van Morrison, Horslips, and the saintly Gary Moore all Celtic brothers, that king of music that stirs your blood, puts a bright shine in your eyes, lifts your spirits, puts a bolt of extra energy in your body, puts a broad smile on your face, make your mind dream of great times, make your feet tap and your hand clap, makes up stand up and dance the crazy dance that no one has seen before as you step out on to the floor and through shapes like the very great Phil and Rory Gallagher did on stage. This music has the power to defect and drive the bad virus down into a dirty hole in the growth and back to is friend that bad devel
@pjotr60dvd Thanks for that. I'm getting a band together and want to do a version of this, although I think most fans of traditional music would class it as a 'butchering' of the song, as I want to try and do a 'Cure styled' gothic rock arrangement ;=)
@DerrickDeluXe Yes, but you should hear him play on record, in the first incarnation of Planxty! Now, THAT version of The Blacksmith wipes the floor with THIS one.
interesting to listen to this next to the earlier one on the late show. andy's voice has gotten more a more plaintive, pleading quality. both just beautiful.
