Plash Palatka Bushcraft Shelter and Swiss Alpenflage Camo M70 Gear

A look at some of the Swiss M70 gear in the super cool Alpenflage camo. This red dominant pattern is exceptional during spring and fall in the eastern Woodlands. We then checkout setting up a plash palatka shelter in a modified plow point configuration that affords the hardcore minimalist a bit more room with their vintage wooden poncho shelter.

Good camo utilizes red... which is complimentary to the color to green, which is to say they are opposites...which is to say they vibrate when in visual proximate to one another. Black one of the easiest colors to see, and that it creates visual contrast that is counter productive to visual stealth. Gray best all around color for anyplace or situation...best camo is Bobcat, no mammals are green. Dont match camo to that of sunlit trees, after all why would someone be walking around out in sunlight when they should be in the shadows where the colors are grayed down.

Swedwoods used a large toggle in one of the arm holes to increase room under a ddr tarp. That incorporated into your design would be a great combination. Thanks to all of you putting this information out there!

awesome. These mean even more to me now that Ive purchased a 1964 vintage Danish Military Poncho (my fam is danish so even better lol). The Poncho came in a belt pouch with 2 stakes and cordage and what I believe is a topper for making a front support pole. Ive already set it up as a lean to style tarp and it worked great. Love seeing these videos to get the ideas flowing. Skol

At 5’3” and shrinking with age- I’m good! 😆 Yea, I have that heavy Swiss camo set with trousers and jacket with the backpack. It would be great if someone could redo with modern materials. Lighter, breathable etc. But, keep the best pattern ever! 😆 I have the light weight set and they are great. The jacket is actually my favorite of all. I only need to add hand packets. I have enough material from cutting off the trousers. Thanks

yep, that's Czechoslovak People's Army camo tarp, you actually made a shelter very similar to one that CS recce troops were using :-) Camo is a variantion to a German WW2 Sumpfmuster, paratroopers had Denison smocks made from it, too. Btw, that tarp is still widely used in Czechia and Slovakia even today, altough it's from the early 50s :-) Good video :-)

Another good video - thank you. Isn't it odd though, I'm color blind and your red camo stands out for me like a black cat on a snowfield! Apparently they used guys like me in WW2 to spot camouflaged positions. My plash is Romanian army (so two arm slits and two internal pockets) and a friend set it up for me as a flying diamond over a "shell scrape" shallow excavation filled with dry leaves - slept like a baby.

Jess, this is your old friend down in North Alabama. When my work situation changed, so did my e-mail; so I had to re-subscribed. I hope that you & your family are doing well. We've had a very challenging year. Both my parents died in 2023; one was 101 & the other was 102. I have missed your e-mails & our occasional telephone conversations. I watched this particular video several times when it first played, & I enjoyed watching it again tonight. Are palatkas still available in the Alpenflage Camo? I have the rubberized Alpenflage Poncho & backpack, but not the shelter which you used in this video. Any suggestions? Thanks. Take care; & may God bless you & yours.

Hi George! Sorry to hear about your parents. Wishing you and your family all the best. The palatka is Czech from the 1950s I believe. Might be able to find one on ebay. They usually go for about $100. Lighter weight than the Soviet version, but also less waterproof.

I now have a full alpenflage get-up …any idea what the mid thigh strap and 2 row of buttons down by the knees are for? PS recently made a plow shelter to save myself from heat stroke using a hiking stick and 4 stakes - Swedish poncho that I carried in my alpenflage jacket back pack that I had clipped onto my y-straps. PS have experimented rolling up “heavy” alp. Jacket on my belt webbing for uphill “California weather” hiking, for when it finally gets cool in the evening or when I stop and it’s windy.

I know you love the zeltbahn plosh polotkas. But are they big enough to be used over a large backpack as a poncho? Doesn't seem to be which is quite a downside. Think I prefer the Russian ratnik poncho you showed instead. If it wasn't for this I much prefer the more durable canvas material of the zeltbahns. Thoughts? Cheers

These aren’t zeltbahns. I think those are really cool, but definitely not big enough for wearing with a ruck. The Soviet version can work, the Polish version is great, but lately I have been favoring the modern Ratnik poncho. Cheers
