You might look into a "trench maintenance" shovel for the plasma table. Clean it while you can, because it is gonna be a wild ride once it opens back up. John

For a rust preventative in the water, I use 1oz of sodium nitrite per 15gal of water, and then a 1/4tsp of Physan-20 per the same as an anti-algae. Seems to work well enough. I forget where exactly I heard about that in the first place - I had it written down for years before I actually built a table. Hahah. I'm also using a 55gal drum underneath the table to act as a reservoir when I'm not cutting, mostly to keep the humidity of my (home)shop down. Pump it up with air at ~5psi, drain it down by gravity. Been meaning to do a video on that (as well as too much other stuff). Might not be worth it for you, given that you run your table frequently and such a shallow, flat pan wouldn't drain too well, but it's something you can keep in mind when that basin eventually rusts through enough and you build a new one.

I've seen similar setups, seems like a fine idea. Not sure how many decades it's going to take to rust through if there is no rust after 2 years

Test Tank Powder it's for radiator repair shops. They dip a repaired radiator in the test tank and check for bubbles. The powder stops rust in the tank, and your tools metal sheets don't rust if they are wiped down. It also neutralizes the flux on repaired solder joints .Your tank lasts longer. The color is green. It's 6.00 for a 12 oz. Package you can buy an entire case for 28.00 dollars. It made by Johnson. Search/google "Test Tank Powder" don't buy from Amazon they wanted 56.00 for three packages RipOff.

Dumping iron into the earth isn’t hurting the planet. The bad thing is when too much iron gets into the groundwater problems then arise that’s why in the video they let it evaporate and settle as dust on the driveway.

Just started watching your channel and I like the content. More of a carpenter myself but looking to learn to do some welding. My first thought when you said you have 250 ft of hose laid out was " why don't they just run some copper pipe and put a hose bib right in that same area ?" You ever think of doing that ? Save yourself a whole lot of time and wouldn't have to carry buckets of water. Just an idea. Keep up the great vids. 👍

You can patch those from below when it's full with 6010 or oxy gas torch. So if you weld up your table full from under it you can tell folk you are an " underwater welder "

IMO it depends on the use. For thin stuff, water is much better to me. For 1/4+ I'd agree downdraft is probably better

@endoskeleton99

@@SegoMan If you use the down draft correctly, you won't be breathing in that crap either. But Richard is right, if you cut a lot of thin metal the water helps reduce warpage. That's the major upside of a water table.

@@phillhuddleston9445 Yeah, that's a bit if a pain, but I use radiant tube heating and its not so bad because it reheats really quickly because everything in my shop is warm and I don't do hours of cutting.

Cleaning your water table really sucks. When my son built his table 4 years ago, we took 3 pieces of 1.5" angle and cut slots in it. The slots in the center piece is offset a couple of inches from the side pieces. To clean the table, you remove the curved slats, take out the angle and have a uninterrupted table to clean. We can wire wheel the rust spots and paint it in place. When you force the slats into their curve, it pushes the center angle to one end and the other two pieces to the opposite end so everything is locked in place. His table is almost 3" deep which is good when we put the oxy torch on it to cut 3/4" and thicker stuff. P.S. His Z axis is set to not allow the torch to go below the slats. I am guessing his ohmic sensor would stop the torch when it hit the water. We have sprayed rusty plate with tap water to make the ohmic sensor detect the plate.
@42Fab
@42Fab 4 года назад
yeah, I would have loved to have done mine differently, but had to work within the constraints of the table I was modifying

Do you guys leave the table bed raw steel (no paint)? I have a manufacturer water bed that I'm currently cleaning out (usually do this once a year), and there are spots of corrosion on the bottom, and I'm trying to decide about repainting it before putting everything back together this time around. My water is about 3 inches deep, which tends to keep the bottom in decent shape, but after 7 or 8 years of use, it's getting some spots that could rust through one day.
@42Fab
@42Fab 6 месяцев назад
I left it completely raw. the anti corrosion stuff in the water protects the bed too. little bit of rust around the water line, where the cutter never goes, and on the underside, not enough to matter

Do you have any experience cutting stainless steel (14 Ga - 1/4") I would like to know whats the edge quality after cutting stainless. I'm considering to buy a plasma table but most of my projects are stainless steel. I know that a water jet or laser would do a better job cutting stainless but I can't afford that kind of machinery. Hopefully you have some input. Thanks!
@42Fab

I get a slightly rough edge on stainless. I believe cutting with nitrogen is the answer, but it hasn't been a big enough deal for me to need to address it.
@phillhuddleston9445

It does not cut perfect but as long as you keep the travel speed up and don't go too slow it cuts decent. Go too slow and it gets pretty rough.
