Join Plastering For Beginners and receive a free plastering course ideal for anyone who’s learning how to plaster: plasteringforb...
In this video, we’ll show you how to plaster a big ceiling. They can be tough to handle sometimes!
The hardest thing with plastering is making sure you can cover a large area before the plaster sets. You’re always on a clock and if the plaster dries out before you’ve had a chance to flatten it then your in for a lot of trouble!
And big ceilings have the same issues which is why we’re going to show you how to plaster a ceiling for beginners. They often take a lot more time than walls which is why we need to come up with a plan for making it easier.
We’ll discuss:
Plastering stilts and how to use them
Ox Speedskim pole attachment review (Lifesaver!)
Plastering techniques for plastering ceilings
Mixing the plaster with advice on consistency
Cross towelling and why we need to do it
And much, much more!
This is just a snippet of what you can receive from today's video. If you enjoy this tutorial please like and subscribe for more videos. We’d also love to hear from you so if you have any questions just ask!

The cameraman deserves some credit. Makes the video far more professional than a fixed camera. Takes the whole thing up a league. No waving the camera about and excessive use of the zoom. Perfect. Great video. I've now plastered a large renovation thanks to your videos. Spent a lot on tools lol ☺️ If I get it wrong sponge float saves me. Big thanks

brave man for taking on such a large ceiling on your own, I used to be able to do it years ago but know in my 60's and struggle so I get the labourer to help with flatting the coats, I found these large flatting tools help a lot ,save your wrists a lot, I normally polish up with a plastic trowel, but hat hat off to your abilaty to do a commentary as well, well impressed

I have been plastering 25 years and your comment at the beginning is spot on, people need to learn to use a trowel only from start to finish too many people think that they can take short cuts with some of the new tools and there is no short cuts

Tried out my 600 speedskim on a big ceiling yesterday and was amazed with the results, used my plazifex trowel to take out the few lines it left before the second coat. Repeated the process for the second coat and then swapped to the thin metal blade,the time and energy saved was remarkable and the finish was amazing. Definitely a game changer 😀😀

Just taken deliver of a speed skim, plastic blade, got a large ceiling to do and old knees, also got a grip and pole and will give it a go. Noticed it has some ridges on the backside of the blade, I assume that’s normal and doesn’t effect the flatness. Nice to see the corners rounded!
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 3 года назад
Hi mate! The ridges help move the plaster evenly - it's actually really effective but I was dubious about it in the beginning. It's all about the rounded corners 😉

When I used to do plastering. I used to make sure there was a gap as big as my fist 👊 between the ceiling and the top of my head vertically so when I’m putting it on and troweling up. I’m not looking up at the ceiling and straining my neck. I’m looking forward. But slightly up if that makes sense. There was a big gap between your head and the ceiling. And it makes it so hard. Try making the stilts higher and you’ll find it’s not as straining. Great video by the way. You done well doing that ceiling on your own. I would struggle. I stopped plastering 4 years ago. Bloody hated it in the end 😂. Great video

@patrickstapleton511
@patrickstapleton511 4 года назад
Exactly what Jimmy was saying is the right way. Leaving yourself short you're adding alot of pressure on your arms and shoulders and back for that matter. You'll get a much bigger spread the closer you are to the ceiling and have it on in half the time. Fist between your head and ceiling and you'll get a spread of about 6 foot each stroke. Plus use a spot board its alot quicker and saves the elbows from scooping out of a bucket

Ceilings where always done of planks and trestles on building sites a few years back. They where put up by your labourer. Who also mixed your plaster with a stick and plunger. And no working out of buckets. Sometimes it seems things have gone backwards

How have things gone backwards? Stilts, speedskims, and mixing drills make your life as a plasterer easier. When I started plastering 18 years ago my gaffer would have me mixing buckets of drywall adhesive and skim with a stick and plunger, browning in a bath with a rake and im telling u now I dont miss those days. Its a tough old game and anything that makes your life easier is worth doing.

Its good practice to fasten the calf straps of the stilts before the lower foot straps, the upper strap gives more security while "strapping in", if you have a woops with only the bottom straps done up you WILL break your ankle, well done on the vid.

Such a large ceiling, will the plaster not dry before the whole surface is covered? I thought there is a 30-minute window to work with a plaster batch but it will take longer to cover the whole thing for a beginner

Great video, will be using loads of this in my renovation. Shame the worlds gone crazy and multi finish plaster has turned into gold dust. I can wait but I feel for the plasters out there that can’t work as a result of it

i think youtube provides subtitles for videos automatically. i don't think youtubers can provide subtitles for all nationalities cause that would be a bit unfair to anyone else who may not also understand. it's a tough one but if you put the times of the video that you don't understand what is being said, i could write the translation for you. if that helps.

@@PlasteringForBeginners Hi, hope you don't mind but I have a quick question I hope you can help with. I own a 1930s house and I've had to remove large sections of plaster (almost the entire wall) in one of the bedrooms. I fancy having a go at plastering after watching your videos. Would you recommend I dot and dab and skim or use bonding? Cheers in advance, Anthony
@Jason_phillips
@Jason_phillips 4 года назад
@@anthonya3666 I'm in the same position. I am going to practice on the 2x2 box room. I was going to dot and dab plasterboard first but I decided to now use bonding, just because it will give me some practice using the trowel. Then I can make a judgement call about having a go at the final finish or if I need to get a plasterer in ;) Either way, I am going to do one wall at a time, starting with the wall directly opposite the window so any mistakes will be less obvious.

Bought one last week to use on a ceiling and was very disappointed with the Speedskim St. I found it left lines also the bracket doesn't seem to fit snug to the Speedskim. I've just stumbled across a review you did of using one and you said to round the edges which I'm going to do. But not sure about fitting the bracket, I may be fitting it wrong. 🤷‍♂️ I want it to work so I will persevere with it.

Want to buy an sf one and give it a go what’s the best size to go for with the view of also buying the other blades as well. Also looking at buying an ox 14 inch trowel. My trowel is only 12. Can’t warrant the price of marshaltown perma range. I do a lot of patching in wall chasers dot and dab and after watching your videos I’m going to skim some full walls in my house for practice

Hardest to develope the ability to do ceilings are and when you crack it . I personally would rather do ceilings all day every day. Maybe sounds crazy but I don't need stilts or hop ups at 6.8 I love a few ceilings to play with because I don't have to stretch to the skirting height 👍. Best thing I was taught 30 years ago . Learning plastering is like Learning to pass driving test . First you learn how to get qualified and then you learn how it works for you . Flat n smooth is just that regardless of how you get there. Tight lines to ya 👍 tidy work nice to see 👍

I had a joiner once say to me "Surly by now you should have come up with a formula where a certain area means certain amount of water ,perfect every time) like every wall is exactly the same !.i still get caught out now and then but close enough. Your always going to get a little bit of waste .and it's not the end of the world

The room was prepped by some Tackers but some of the reveals were out of plumb. I wasn't happy with them so I screwed a timber to the face of the reveals. I then bonded the reveals plumb using the timber as a guide - is a fast way to get accurate reveals 👍

Good video nice to see another grafter doing big ceilings alone .do yourself a favour though .adjust your stilts and .get the top of your head an inch of the ceiling and look down it not up at it ..youll have no neck or shoulders in a few years .from looking up and reaching ,.and a piece of sponge between your straps and legs works wonders.cheers
