I'm finding this really helpful. I got thrown into plastering when I stopped attending school at 14/15, my step dad pretty much forced me to go to work with him as a plasterer. I did a bit, picked up some of it but i was never really taught the art of it and tret like a labourer so I obs struggled, disliked it, then quit. I've now got my own house and I'm wanting to gut it and re plaster it. This is helpful to me. So much of it that I was not taught. Cheers

loved the intro. I saw a video yesterday from you about initial technique and was referred here. Now I am signing up for the e-mail course. I have a practice wall that I am doing on an enclosed porch, so right now I am searching for prepping the wall prior to using PVA. Thanks for your superb initial videos that I watched. Cheers! David

Spray paint this wall and you can use it as a mirror. I have been using trowel for our 20 years, I salute you for your amazing skills. I really enjoy plastering, started with rendering and mould making when we use to smooth the cement on the outside of the buildings on a very hot summer day in Middle Eastern climate. I have learned quite a few bits along the way. Nice job bro 👍

Great video. Every time new things to learn. Watched your videos and they were mostly plastering on plasterboard. This video is essential and more practical than plasterboard skimming. I would like to ask you to make a video about the difference between OX Speedskims (plastic, metal, flex plastic) and when it's the best time to use them? Got the speedskim metal but don't know why keep getting lines when I use it?

couple points.. don't apply more water to wet/setting plaster, you get tiger stripes. use the water that's already in the plaster to get flat. don't use fat to fill in. beginner's mistake. use remaining plaster to fill other than that good advice for beginners horizontal troweling is easier on the back and knees, bending up and down like.. keep up the good videos all the same! time served and still learning...

Walls like that aren't usually too bad Blaine. You don't always have to plaster them. Yes in an ideal world, but sometimes we get the walls good enough just using decent paint and dry lining compound. It creates a bit of playing but it's do-able. 👍👍 plastering is the best but the more internal angles and reveals you have to do the longer it takes. Obv. If it's a room that gets a lot of light or you have a fussy customer then yeah multi is the kiddy.

I just done my first well, never plastered before. It went fine. However - Make sure to use an the right size bucket for both plaster and the cleaning bucket. Mix well, mix very well. The only thing that went wrong was due to poor mixing technique it created very hard dried plaster bits. Very few of them but enough to make the process be slightly off perfect. You will get plaster on floor but it doesn’t matter. Be careful of temperature in the room. Set some basic timers so you know where you are. If you need to walk outside to clean tools, use lots of old towels to exit on floor. Use a decent portable spot light to help see imperfections. You can tell when to our second coat on because when touching it doesn’t come off on fingers. Use the trowel techniques he said, including edge ways down the wall. Trust me you can do it, I just did.

@tomoliver4632

Apply the scrim tape before you pva it'll strengthen the tape when you apply the first coat of pva
@tomoliver4632
@tomoliver4632 3 года назад
& scrim tape won't stick to wet pva, if it's not sticking to the original wall or ceiling properly buy the orange tape hes using in the video it may be past its sell by date I've thrown out loads of rolls of tapes before as a plasterer because they won't adhere to the ceiling or wall properly, buy the really sticky stuff or like he stuck the beads on the windows 🪟 in the video with multifinish plaster.. also do that with the joints of tape, stick it with plaster but make sure it's flat with the ceiling or wall & covered the joint or crack completely, but put the tape on first and then pva, if you can go over the taped joints with a flat trowel with a bit of force to make sure it's completely flat & stuck it shouldnt bubble or disturb your finish

Thanks Blaine. I’ve got a built in wardrobe that I’m going to have a go at plastering this weekend. If I f*ck it up, then luckily nobody will see it! Just a couple of questions before I do. 1. You mentioned hairline cracks and using scrim over these. Does this apply to very very small hairline cracks (less than 1mm)? I’ve got some very tiny cracks across the entire wall, so it would be a bugger to scrim every single one. 2. Do you have a rough guide to timings in between stages? I’ve got the idea that it’s ready for a second coat after 25-30 mins, but not sure how long I need to wait until polishing it off at the end etc. I don’t want to wait too long. Cheers buddy

My tip: use1/2 inch thick expanded polystyrene, cut to single/double electricians box size, to fill the back-box void and plaster straight over. When dry just poke it with your finger and remove the whole lot in one go.

Dude you should get a go-pro or reasonably priced equivalent, and strap it to your wrist so you can give us a up close view of trowel angles and what we should look for on the wall. Video idea: plaster a wall then do the common mistakes made by beginners on purpose then show us how you would fix each one?

@nathan87
@nathan87 4 года назад
Hi Blaine, thanks so much for the videos! I'm a DIYer with a couple of rooms to do in my house and I'd be really grateful if you could answer a couple of questions. I don't have much plastering experience; only a few plasterboard walls and chases. I did get acceptable results, but honestly I would still like to improve. Firstly: what is the purpose of the second coat? I have always found that my second coat ends up looking and acting exactly the same as my first. For this reason, I have previously used one coat, because, well, there didn't seem much point if the second coat ends up just like the first anyway. Is there something I should be doing differently on the second coat? Should the plaster feel or react differently? (I completely understand that "If it works, it's good", but I'm still wondering if I'm missing out on something here.) Secondly: The equipment I used before was extremely basic, just a hawk and single trowel. My results look flat to the eye, but you can still feel a subtle ripple when you run your hand over them. Is this as good as I could expect, or should I still be looking for the walls to feel perfectly flat even with this basic equipment? (I will definitely be looking at getting some of the other equipment you show in this video, but I would still like to know what is achievable with just the basics.) Again, thanks so much!

Ayup Duck.I don t know if he responded or not.To get a flat wall all around you shoud have some markings first of all.Let s say for the beginers with minimal tools,they shoud purchase a laser level.However i never used one.I m only with bubble lever and mathematics a lot.In a corner you use the vertical witness of the bubble lever,cheking for the highest level,on the lever.keeping the buble straight,using a chemical pen,draw a vertical straight line.Using 3 wood pieces with mortar let s say,put them from 40 cm to 40 cm,using the floor like a hard point,just to be sure,and folowing the line of the pen!!!!!you aligne them!After this,on the wall who need s to be taken care of,just align another marks,wooden ones from 40 to 40 or 30 to 30,beering in mind with a straight piece of wood(very hard to find one now days)to check also the end of wall.depands on what tools you have!!!it s all simple.And to answer on your question,it s all about the tools you have,and the material.If you are using crap ones,go for the second hand,level it with water.If you don t mind the cost s,you can use multifinish from B@Q,as long as you do not go further than 1cm deepnes.If not,inform your customer that the house is shiet,(hear that when you are knocking on the walls),inform him that you will have to go to brick,mortar after(no plastering on bricks,mate,don t get fooled),plaster and whatever,tiles,water proofing.Hope you will enjoy that one!And get a laser lever,you are back to the future!!!🤣

Thank you for sharing with us your great skills. I have a question about the wall prep. Do I have to remove an old paint. The paint is not flaking. In the kitchen I have that gloss paint 🤦🏻‍♂️ and just wondering if I could just put PVA and Bonding and then Multi? Or do I have to scrape it to the old plaster and remove all paint. It’s a nightmare to remove it 🙄

Hi Blaine, i had a wall plastered professionally. did a great job. However he did it to fit the door frame which was out and the door cut to measure. now i'm having a new expensive door put in and the frame straightend leaving the wall out. it's fine at the bottom but becomes a centimeter or so out as you go up the wall.do i just pva over the existing plaster or do i rough up the surface. i'm going to do the bar technique to get it level. what plaster should i use ? Is thistle coat ok? thank you
