Plastic Coating System

I was fortunate enough to get a tour of my neighbouring factory where they do Plastic Coating, it's a very basic system where a metal part is baked at 348 degrees celsius for 4 minutes, dipped in aerated plastic powder then using a low pressure air blower to remove the loose powder then baked again to flow the powder out before the final step of cooling down.

I was told never use flame ovens with powder coating. The powder will never look even and will have flaws. This looks like a older process that is not used much here in the states any more. I spay the base powder on, preset toaster oven on about 350 degrees. When it starts to flow out (melt) I will spay a candy powder or a clear powder for top coat. Seems to work out nice so far..

Very interesting! The similar process I've seen in the US they use an electro static charge to hold the powder on the part until it's baked for final adhesion and smoothing. The powder is sprayed on with a special gun that applies a charge to the powder. It may be smoother with the spraying initially but likely the same after baking. The pre heat process here seems like it may be a little less messy with less powder waste. Again thanks for another great vid!

Is it possible to know the estimated temperature for the curing oven? It would be a big help. Im testing my product but have not get the smoothness i wanted. The pre-heating Temp is 200-350 Celsius degree, the curing temp is around 180. The test products are not shiny as yours. Some got burned, some have rough surface. I am using PE powder btw. I really appreciate the answer. Thank in advance!

Seems they could easily improve their productivity as much of the process relies on manual labour of items at high temperatures. Lots of small companies like this that get stuck in a rut when it comes to proceedures...

Hi, I was looking for this very application sine last few days. I have some questions and would be pleased if your good self reply the same 1. what is the commercial name of this powder and where to get it from 2. what is the temperature for preheating the product to be coated 3. what is the post heating temperature. It would be my pleasure if you answer the above queries. Regards, Subodh Murarka

This process is called a fluidized powder dip. The powder is just regular powder coating powder. basically you preheat the part enough that when it is dropped into the tank the powder melts and sticks to it. If you have the part temperature correct, only a small layer of powder will stick to it, the the stuck on powder will provide some heat insulation keeping too much powder from being applied. Once the powder is stuck to the part and excess is removed then it can be cured like normal powder coat. Not all parts are good candidates for this process, the less cavities and pockets the better. The huge upside to this process is very low wasted powder, and as you can see it is quite compact compared to an automated powder coating line with traditional spray coating.

this is extremely weird i must say...i mean, you have regular powder coating that cost you 4 times more then this and people still use the old way of doing...in my town there is at least 10 companies that are in powder coating business, and none of them use this technique. So my question is...does people not know about this technique or is there another problem with this type of product protection?

This process is the original powder coating process but is still commonly used for a lot of thermoplastic coating such as Nylon, PVC, or PE, and thermosetting fusion bonded epoxies. These coatings are more functional in nature for abrasion resistance, oil & water pipes/valves, electrical insulation. This process allows the coating to be applied at a much heavier film build than is possible with electrostatic spray. ES is usually 2-4 mils (50-100mm) vs these coatings in fluidized bed which are usually applied from 6 mils up to 250 mils (6.4mm).

What Stephen Walters said is fairly correct, but have a look at www.plascoat.com - they also offer an ES thermoplastic coating, which you can Electrostatically Spray. The minimum required coating thickness for PPA 571 ES is 170 microns, which is fairly easy to reach, if you adjust the spray equipment settings slightly. When fluid bed coating, preheat and postheat temperatures depend ao the polymer used as well as the metal thickness.

+Emily Loveall now that's just silly, I was giddy after only 10 minutes in that place, please buy a respirator and thank me when you're alive after 50, even if it cost $100 how many years work would that take to pay off? Most likely less than half a day but it could add years to the end of your life. Good luck.
