I'm from Malaysia and we have loads of these. They're meant to allow type C plugs (those small 2 pronged European ones) to be plugged into regular UK type sockets, which Malaysia uses. Lots of people don't even use those plastic thingies when plugging type C plugs into sockets and instead stick a chopstick or other items down the top hole in the socket which the earth/ground prong goes in to lower the shutters so they can plug the type C plug in.

Forcing a 2.5A euro plug into the UK socket also bends the contacts apart making it unsafe to use with a standard UK plug afterwards.

There would have to be a very unlikely chain of events occur for me to receive a shock, not least of which is the plug socket unit having a physical fault meaning current was flowing to the earth pin, plus some failure in the consumer unit that allowed the same. BS1363 pins are 15.85 mm apart from the edges. Europlug pins are 13.5 mm though is is flexible as it is designed to fit schuko that has 14.2 mm. Still the 1.65 mm is too much. You can damage the plug and the socket. This can lead to poor contact and fire. This may happen only years later when someone uses a high power equipment. This is a a far more serious problem than the lack of the fuse.

@ivan schafeldt I was speaking about the socket inserts to prevent children putting things into sockets. They are not perfectly safe. @LAnonHubbard
@LAnonHubbard 5 лет назад
@ivan schafeldt I guess if it's in the socket it's inviting for a child to remove and reinsert it, much like the games they're used to playing with square pegs and round holes. Plugging a Euro plug into a BS1363 socket the UK is particularly dangerous because a BS1363 plug contains a fuse max rated at 13A and the circuit is typically a ring of 2.5mm^2 cable protected by a 32A breaker in the fuse-board. What I would like to know, as final ring circuits are AFAIK unique to the UK, is how BS1363 outlets are wired in the UAE, if for example they are on radial circuits protected by 15A breakers then it's not quite so bad. Far from ideal though, because a Europlug is a sloppy fit both electrically and mechanically

Diabolical thing. A short while ago, I did an online check to see how much variability there is regarding plug tops and sockets around the world, and was shocked at some of the things I saw. Without doubt, the UK BS 1362 plug top is the best design ever; the euro type isn’t bad, but I don’t think this plug top has a fuse link. Sadly, I am old enough to remember GEC porcelain 15A 3 pin unshuttered sockets into which a child could easily insert a finger. If modern technology had been around when public supplies were first installed I reckon the supply would be DC, which might be better in more ways than one.
@kevind6645

Personally, I think the UK plug is terrible. It is incredibly bulky; with radial topology, the fuse is redundant, and RCDs negate the need for shutters. Worst of all, it becomes a domestic Punji Stick when left laying on the floor.

And when I was a kid I got bit by 30-40 kilovolts when my hand got a little too close to a faulty spark plug wire while I was helping my dad work on an old car. *And I'm perfectly fine.* You don't need shutters in your sockets. If you did, pretty much every country that wasn't using the British standard would have a massive problem with the little crotch goblins electrocuting themselves. Atop that, shutters aren't going to stop inquisitive little cumstains from poking shit into the outlets. What does stop that is parenting. Kids are pretty dumb, but when they set their minds to things, they can defeat all manner of safety 'features' intended to protect them. In olden days, plugs had 3 round pins and sockets had 3 round holes in the UK. I remember even in the 1980s it was common for appliances to be sold without plugs and the consumer would attach their own, presumably because some unmodernised houses still had the old round pin sockets. In even earlier times, some appliances had plugs to fit into light sockets. The only UK 2-pin sockets I know of were the bathroom ones, which I think had a lower voltage, sometimes marked "shavers only".

Well, most of continental Europe has sockets with exposed socket holes and no shutters. You can buy plastic covers which are difficult to remove (for children) mind you, when I was kid I managed to blow fuses and get shocked by sticking scissors into one of the mains sockets. I was growing up in the time where I was walking to school at age of 7 with house keys on piece of string around my neck, so different approach to safety. Mind you, I didn't try this scissors trick again 😂😂✂️✂️
@rambo1152
@rambo1152 5 лет назад
I agree that MK design is excellent, but you are wrong when you say all three pins need to be present. The earth pin plays no part in opening the shutter. In fact on the early specimens on this design a Euro plug would go in no problem at all, then they tweaked the profile of the shutter to stop that happening in later production. My house is full of the earlier type.
@bdf2718
@bdf2718 5 лет назад
@@rambo1152 History is a great subject. Especially when you understand that it continues right up to the present. The first design of MK BS1363 sockets had a shutter which was opened by the insertion of the earth pin. That was in the days of long, long ago. A newer design of MK BS1363 sockets had a shutter which was operated by the simultaneous insertion of live and neutral pins; the earth pin played no part. You seem to have a lot of those. You also think that's the end of the matter, when it isn't. The latest design of MK BS1363 sockets has a shutter which requires the simultaneous insertion of *all three* pins. It is a very clever piece of mechanical design. And it's a bit of a bugger to defeat. You need something with a very similar shape to this plastic socket key, in fact. Whether or not this plastic socket key is actually up to the job of defeating a modern MK socket is open to question. It's a piece of crap so may not do the job it was designed for.

What really puzzles me is why the UK socket would be adopted anywhere else, it's so specific in its purpose in terms of the system it is meant to support that it just doesn't make sense to pick it for your electrical socket. And because someone settled on it seemingly at random the customer is stuck with a stupid situation where he is vended product with a normal plug he has to now somehow connect to a moon-socket while retaining something like safety. I'm not surprised the goods are not vended with the UK plug, the UK plug is basically a heavy appliance plug, on a par with what you might use to plug in a large welder or some similar piece of industrial apparatus. Therefor it is more expensive, and its unique feature of the fuse in the plug doesn't even get to come into play. Depending on how the property was wired it could even induce hazards of its own if he who wired it expected the BS1363 standard's unique qualities would be adhered to and put to use, a situation could arise where a lot of amperage was available to create a short circuit of concerning power in some device wired more flimsily because its designers didn't think it would ever be plugged in to such a socket and without a fuse in the plug to protect the cable, it could end up with more than double the amps it was rated for on hand for whatever chaos may arise. A long time ago I was given two proper adapters for BS1363 to "normal" plugs, they both contain a fuse of appropriate amperage.
@TestECull
@TestECull 5 лет назад
I have pondered getting a BS1363 socket set for my air compressor in my garage, partly as an anti-theft measure(Who's gonna steal an air compressor with a fucking moon plug on it over here in the States?) and partly because it likes to pop breakers on the standard NEMA 5-15 it's equipped with currently. Could put it on a 20 amp breaker that way. Would bypass the plug fuse, though. No need. It'd be on its own 20 amp breaker and the wiring in the compressor would hold long enough for said breaker to trip in a fault situation.
