I was worried that his wife and kid leaving would trigger a downward spiral, but it seems it gave him time to reflect on himself and of course to do all the chores he'd been relying on her to do, which is exercise in itself. Plus it looked like he lived right next to a pond, and swimming is a great way to have fun and be active at the same time, and it's gentle on the joints too. Wishing the best for him, Nissa, and their kid going forward.

I had a by-pass 35yrs ago (12" scar down my chest). But over the past 10yrs, because of adhesions, now have small bowel obstructions - about 7/year. It's treated conservatively because it's such a horrid operation & the adhesions will only return. It's awful - I wish I had known. I was 140kg & got down to 60kg.

I saw this video about a woman who’s boyfriend broke up with her for trying to lose weight, which is disgusting and NOT how a person should treat their partner. It’s such a juxtaposition between that episode and this one. a partner should be supportive to their partners, not just leaving when they’re trying to better themselves because they have a fetishized idea of them and don’t want to lose it. but what was also really disappointing was how not understanding the doctor was, she turned back to food and wasn’t eating as healthy (only for a couple weeks) and the doctor was really mean to her and said he wouldn’t help her. of course the patient has a lot of the responsibility to help themselves, but he was really rude considering that she just lost the person who cooked her the healthy meals and helped her in general because she couldn’t walk very well. obviously that would seriously affect her mental state in this process because if losing weight means she loses people, why would she want to do it? the doctor had no sympathy for her even though he’s not just doing one surgery, he is watching her weight and guiding her through this journey.

When I graduated high school I was over 400lbs. I unfortunately developed gastroparesis due to my Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and lost over 200lbs in a year and a half. I had a lot of hospital stays but I looked great. I had loose skin, I still do. It's gotten better over the years but I've also had kids. My arms, legs and belly all have some extra skin so I look flabbier than I am but I've learned how to control my weight now and figured out a diet that works for me. :)

EDS is so hard. It’s tough to exercise, but carrying extra weight makes the subluxations worse, so I do my best to control my weight primarily with diet. Of course we also struggle with nutrient absorption so I take lots of supplements to make up for my low calorie intake. People don’t realize how few calories we burn because we don’t have as much muscle mass as normal folks. Swimming is awesome and I’d really like to start back up, but I never lost any weight doing it. Best of luck to you.

Exactly! It always makes me so sad how cruel people can be. People who are healthy and can just cut back on snacks and easily loose weight if they overindulge don't understand that you don't get THAT big through simple overeating or irresponsibility. Almost everyone on the show has multiple severe physical and mental illnesses, most of which are outside of their control. Treating the underlying illnesses causes weight loss. We don't try to shame people out of having symptoms from cancer or a broken leg, so why do we expect it to work on illnesses that have weight gain as a symptom?

My husband had gastric bypass surgery in 2015. He was never terribly overweight and wouldn't have been a candidate for surgery based on extra weight alone (75-80 lbs, and he's a pretty big guy with a lot of muscle) but he's also diabetic and has very high blood pressure, so insurance approved it. We did the counseling, the nutrition classes, etc. and he seemed serious about adopting a healthier lifestyle. He recovered from surgery very quickly and lost 50 lbs in the first few weeks, but then started to overeat again. A year later, he regained 40 lbs; now he's at least 100 lbs over his ideal weight and isn't happy about it, but refuses to make any changes. I did everything I could think of to help and support him, but at the end of the day - I'm not his mother, his babysitter, or his jailer. The man in this video is doing an amazing job despite the rough start; major respect! He looks much happier as well as proud of himself, and he should be! 👏 I hope he continues on this journey. Very happy that his wife came back.
@gemmacook1753

I have had the surgery myself and I genuinely do not understand how people are able to gain all the weight back, did he just have the sleeve or the full Roux en y? Honestly I had the SASI bypass with is a mixture of the two mentioned above and if I eat too much or too quickly or even something too sweet it makes me incredibly ill or literally hurts. I feel frustrated for the people who gain it all back because it really does take a lot to eat enough to even gain it back, but you did your best and unfortunately some people just don't help themselves. I weigh myself every month, EVERY month and if I gain weight I then weigh every week to see if its steadily going back on or just a fluke, why? Because I want to stop myself from getting bigger and the sooner I do, the less work I need to do to get back down and to then trim out the bad habits a bit. The surgery is a tool and really needs people to put in the work, it's sad those who had that chance just blow it. I had to pay for my own surgery, it was not easy saving that much, I'll be damned if I waste all that saving and cutting back.
@agingknees6188
@agingknees6188 2 года назад
@@gemmacook1753 These surgeries ruin people's metabolisms. Many people gain it back because their metabolism is shot and doctors don't care to address root cause (e.g., trauma).
@gemmacook1753
@gemmacook1753 2 года назад
@@agingknees6188 that's not it at all. Yes our metabolism does change to adapt to the new way of digesting, but it DOES NOT mean we now absorb more calories or digest food in a way that weight gain is inevitable. People gain the weight back because they didnt address the root cause of their over eating and thought the surgery alone would fix everything, instead of having both side by side so they can make sure they don't over eat. It takes a lot to gain it back, especially after a full bypass, the body holds on for a bit at the lower weight but eventually it can't anymore and thus they gain weight back normally because they are eating the wrong foods and in big portion sizes. Those who only get the sleeve don't have any back up what so ever if they eat the wrong food or over eat which means they gain the weight back. These surgeries are tools, they can't work miracles. Anyone getting the surgery is told very clearly that we need to address our eating issues as well as the surgery and learn not to use food as comfort etc hence why ppl like me who did do that manage to keep the weight off for years and those who don't relapse and gain weight back. Bear in mind a successful surgery is classed as someone losing 50% of the weight they need to and keeping it off for 5 years.

In my home city, nobody can have gastric bypass surgery of any kind until they go through a minimum of six months of intensive counseling with a psychiatrist---not a psychologist, but a genuine psychiatrist---who has to evaluate that person's readiness for such surgery. One of the many things they look for is whether the person is considering the surgery just for appearance's sake, or are they doing it for their health? If for health, the surgery is usually approved. If for appearances only, then the person has to have considerably more counseling. The bariatric surgeons with whom I had contact during my 45 years working as a medical staff member all said the same thing---"...vanity just can't come into this (reason for wanting surgery); one must be health oriented first and foremost."

The process to get my gastric bypass took almost a year. I had to take educational classes about how life would be post operation. I had to show I could eat and drink correctly. *WARNING: I've never watched the TV show, but it looks so AMAZING.* I cried to see what grief did to Chuck's life & to his 2nd marriage to Nissa, but what an inspiration. It reminded me of a dear friend who needed Lap Band surgery a few years ago after a heart attack, and she lost ALL her extra weight - she got down from 350lbs to only 120 pounds! She was running marathons within only 1.5 years! So, I'm like "Yeah!!! You & your family are gonna be so much healthier now!" But sadly, she confided in me a short time later that she fell into Alcoholism. 💔 That's when I learned about "addiction transference." Briefly - If you don't get to the bottom of *Why* you have certain kinds of problems, they'll have a way of re-emerging in *another* form. It's sad & seems like nobody talks about it. People are way too focused now on looks these days & looking good won't solve your problems! You'll just wear smaller clothing - that is *ALL.* Ironically, I've battled alcohol for almost 20 years ... and wouldn't you know it, I quit drinking cold turkey in '10 & quickly gained 50 lbs. because I never dealt with *why* I drank in the first place! I relapsed & I'm now getting kinda heavy! With some great help, I'm slowly progressing towards sobriety AND weight loss. I'll tell you, it's one of the hardest things I've ever done, so I pray for everyone who fights these battles. I also try to be less judgemental - you just never know what other people are battling in life . 🙏🏽🫂🙏🏽

A food addiction is far worst than any drug or alcohol addiction. You have to eat to live, where is the line of eating to sustain life becoming feeding an addiction? With drugs or alcohol, you simply do not consume it.

Used to work at McDonalds and they USED to crack their own eggs and steam them on the grill but they're not pre-made-frozen they come already folded and all you do is steam them on the grill under a hood. It used to be where you cracked them yourself and hand folded them with the spatula.

I got gastric bypass July 2021 and I went from 259 to currently 149. The biggest thing you hear is that it's "the easy way out" but it's not. You take vitamins 5x daily for the rest of your life and can't eat and drink at the same time among other things. Doctors always told me losing weight would fix all my health problems but it didn't and that has been something mentally I have to accept.

It was a big thing to have done in a health project office I worked in in California. The women I worked with would go to Mexico for surgery. As a RN the one side effect I wasn't aware of until having five people share office bathrooms with me that were 5 bypass clients. The combination of high liquid intake, supplements, and metablic changes had them pooping frequently liquid, very smelly stools. Sealed office building, so it was an issue! I only hoped it would improve for them over the process.

If major weight loss prior to bariatric surgery is a necessity, and patients achieve these (sometimes) dramatic losses, why the need for the surgery? They’ve just proven to themselves that they can make the lifestyle changes and accomplish the feat on their own. Any kind of surgery carries with it an inherent risk, and those who lose a staggering amount of weight will have to have several surgeries to remove excess skin which, in itself, is also fraught with danger. So why increase the risk of killing a patient with what should be noted - in the case of patients who adhere to the modifications necessary - as unnecessary slicing and dicing?

It seems that so many of the people on "My 600 lb Life" had experienced some very traumatic events in their past. I doubt that emotionally healthy, positive, balanced people just decide to start overeating until they gain 100s of lbs...but we generally turn to whatever brings us comfort during rough times, and food is a powerful association with happiness, going back to childhood. When my husband was murdered in 1994, I stopped eating and sleeping. Having that control always gave me comfort when my world felt out of control; but I still have an eating disorder mindset, and that's not very healthy either.

We need an update! Did he keep up the work? What does he weigh now? How's it going with Nissa? This makes my 215 this time last year and my loss down to 190 now, in a year yes not much, look like nothing! I'm very unmotivated and don't have the money to go on a diet other than the barely 1800 KCal a day I've been on for years cause can't afford to eat much, but I'm working out bit by bit every day and making it work! You don't need drastic intervention like this to lose weight, unless you're this heavy. Even dancing around in your chair until you sweat a few times a day can help! Maybe replace 2 glasses of soda with 2 glasses of water a day. Slowly increasing the amount of water and decrease the amount of soda a day. Once the dancing in your chair stop making you sweat so much, get up and walk around your house for like 5 minutes a few times a day. Get up and walk in place during commercials or ads. Any caloric use more than you are doing now while reducing you intake helps! It might be slow, but it will work. Especially if you cut excess calories. Instead of having 3 cookies a day, step down to 1.

I'm wondering if you have any thoughts on why duodenal switch surgery isn't more popular? I'd never even heard of it until I had the first consult with my surgeon in Oct 2020. I had the surgery in June 2021 and have lost 212 lbs, so far. No complications or anything, couldn't be happier with it.

It's newer and the risk of vitamin deficiency is higher. It's also a much more complicated surgery to perform. An average DS takes 2-3 hours vs around 45 minutes for the sleeve, a much longer time to be under anesthesia. It's usually reserved as a last resort after sleeve or bypass fails. It's also not often covered by insurance companies because it's still seen as somewhat experimental. Because of those risks DS is usually reserved for patients with a BMI over 50. It also has the same acid reflux risks as the sleeve (since that's what it is) so people at risk for that are better candidates for bypass.

Horrific that there are ppl willing to exploit others. Those who can be exploited buckle to this because of the level of shame they carry which reduces their consciousness by default. But those who exploit are highly aware. I'll leave it at that. Be mindful if you have the capacity to do so.

If you noticed the skin bronzing under his arms at ~ 0:26 of the video, that is a manifestation of "bronze diabetes," or diabetes associated with hemochromatosis, which is a disease of the liver. The bronzing is caused by buildup of iron. There are other diseases in which this symptom manifests, but bronze diabetes is common. I've even seen people (showering on the beach, for example) with it, who were thin. Thin people can have a fatty/diseased liver, too. EDIT: I think his second wife just wants out. She's got a baby. She's morbidly obese herself, which leads to all the comorbid conditions we heard so much about during the pandemic. My opinion is she's doing the right thing by leaving him. She needs to focus on herself and her baby.

Caring for a 25 pound baby while also caring for a 600 pound husband would make me feel like a servant to. I have been with someone who didn’t do hardly anything and it makes you so resentful. Not only that but you become lazy to because when you are doing most of the adulting eventually you just think, “ if he doesn’t feel the need to care about the dishes or bills or whatever it is, then why should I? It’s a very depressing place to be and definitely not good for anyone physically, emotionally, or mentally. If you aren’t equally yoked it’s time to examine your relationship.

I was so glad to see he got himself together, lost the equivalent of at least 2 full sized men and was in a better place mentally. Good for him! His was one of my favorite stories. A lot of them just keep making excuses and don’t seem to care much. But Chuck woke up and saw the big picture and turned his life around. That’s what I like to see. I hope he’s still doing well ❤

I don't understand the point of a plastic surgeon reacting to this show without talking about the state of technology for skin removal and other aesthetic surgeries desired after massive weight loss. Per Dr. Terry Dubrow (maybe 3 years ago), the state of skin removal surgery is still quite poor, particularly for leg lifts needed as a result of massive weightloss.

At 8:24. Yeah, I get the woman. She married a man to have a baby with. She didn't marry a second baby she needed to take care of on top of her other baby. That's too much. Yes, poor man, we should empathize with him for his terrible luck with his first wife. But he needs to process that grief and get out of his depression. That's on him, not on her. So I totally get why she's just had enough of this. I would too if I were in her shoes.

His wife went on to have her own weight loss surgery. She did so well the best I remember. You can tell even with the weight on her that shes an attractive woman. So when she started dropping the pounds it became even more apparent how pretty she is inside and out. She wanted to be healthy for their child and did what she had to do in order to be the best parent she could be. As parents, especially moms, we often times put ourselves last and neglect our health. You could be super mom but if you let your health go and something unfortunate happens as a result where will your child be then.? 🤷‍♀️ I applaud her for all she has done for her family and herself.
