Today I took a look at the story of Casey from TLC’s “Family By The Ton”, a show dedicated to following the journey of a real family’s weight loss. Honestly, I’m not a fan of the title of this show, but I decided to press on anyway and see if there was anything valuable to discuss. At his heaviest, Casey weighed 845 pounds and almost never left his father’s house where he stayed in bed and played video games all day. Today, Casey is employed, living on his own, and weighs under 300 pounds. His journey is nothing short of incredible, due in part to a supportive family, a strong medical team, bariatric surgery, and a commitment to improving his quality of life. Go, Casey!

So far it's pretty spot on, I appreciate the honesty and professionalism. To hear someone speak from a medical standpoint it's easier to take in criticisms and I really appreciate him explaining everything out to help others understand the mindset and how things are. It wasn't a fun life, I was miserable, the whole jounrey has been insane and crazy to apart of. I appreciate Dr. Mike for putting this out there, shouting my channel out in the bio, talking on how I'm doing now and everything. This was a really great watch, thanks everyone for the love and support and thanks again Dr. Mike

I've been trying to lose weight for a few months now, eating a balanced diet, less sugar, more fruits/veggies, more proteins, more homecooked meals, going to the gym 3 times a week... and nothing had happened yet. Sometimes I feel very discouraged and want to cry, because obviously when you're trying to change and make efforts, you can't help hoping to see some kind of results. Once a friend told me "look, you have a healthier lifestyle and more energy, that's a change, and you did that by yourself. Nobody's cooking for you, or exercising for you, you should be proud". Made me feel a bit better. Efforts are never meaningless and useless, the minute you take the first step, you should be proud indeed.

I think your perspective is kind and trauma/eating disorder-informed. Having a trauma-informed doctor is extremely valuable especially in the weight-loss process. We are so cruel to morbidly obese people that there's a lot of extra baggage and sensitivity that comes with weight loss even for those who aren't obese. Thank you for taking a compassionate and modern approach to weight loss. If only most doctors stayed updated on trauma-informed health.

This can get tricky though. A lot of fatphobic people use health to justify their hatred when, in reality, they just hate fat people. And yes, plenty of fat people are also unhealthy in myriad ways. But there are also fat people that live totally healthy and active lifestyles. It’s complicated.

The whole "fatphobia" thing is super scary to me. It's a health risk! When we ask for rights for disabled people or the chronicallynill or awareness of a disease, like all the ailments I have, it's because we want people to take it SERIOUSLY. I don't deserve less rights than someone because I have a faulty heart! .but I need my doctors to tell me IMMEDIATELY if something is unhealthy for me! .and yet somehow the very positive movement for body acceptance and to shy away from fat shaming has turned to something DARK. Where people aren't supposed to mention all the associated health risks with obesity? I've never been above a 25 BMI and yet I'm told IMMEDIATELY when I get close to that I have to lose weight. .because it's for my HEALTH. But we're not supposed to tell someone the health risks of being obese? . Someone who smokes cigarettes had the same right to life liberty and happiness as I do. But we sure as hell tell them it's unhealthy. Same with sunbathing! The most natural thing in the world became suprmeelt dangerous due to thebozone layer, and now we would shake anyone who refused to wear SPF. So what is it about obesity where the person cannot handle being told the truth?
@ruthiemuqatach5942
@ruthiemuqatach5942 3 года назад
@@nataliaalfonso2662 sure, treat it as cigarettes. You won't make fun of smokers. You won't exclude them from things or call them ugly. Thats what we want. We know its unhealthy, trust me its not a secret. But instead of shaming us about our biggest insecurity, why don't you just take a walk with them? Teach them to dance or play tennis. That will help greatly, because if shame was gonna work it would have by now. We see it in the mirror every day.

I had a neck injury which required significant rehab. It was incredibly frustrating learning to crawl again (I had neurological locomotion problems). My PT took videos every week, and she showed me them when I would swear and rage about how useless the whole process was. Usually when I'd just moved the wrong limb for the 20th time in a row or moved my weight so I landed face-first on the mat. In those moments I couldn't see any progress, so watching the video clips was this great reminder of the fact I was getting better, I'd gone from there to here in a week, a month. Doctors are literally running scared right now, unable to tell patients the truth because of the power of evil people on twitter who just want to see the world burn to make themselves feel better... but the funniest thing of all is when you get someone stick thin telling obese people they're 100% healthy and they should accept themselves, nay, get even more obese. You got real bro and laid it down. I read a book once called No Excuses. I was about no matter what happens in life you can choose how that incident affects you (within reason) and how you live your next day. I feel this is the leading cause of my depression because I keep moving and fighting. This boils over though because there are times I don't know why I fight. Even though I know I fight for my family causing a disconnect from them because they are family but the same reason why I hurt. I love your advice about looking at your progress on a larger scale. Last summer my best friend was paralyzed when he was hit on his motorcycle. His T6 was completely crushed. It’s only been 7.5 months since the accident and he gets down on himself for the things he can’t do. I’m always trying to remind him of how much he’s grown and accomplished already in this short time, and that he’ll only progress with time. I remember visiting him in the ICU and how frail he was then, and when he was first admitted to in patient therapy. He couldn’t sit up for long periods of time because his blood pressure would plummet, now he can sit up unassisted. He can get in his standing frame and stand straight up, but the first time he used it he couldn’t go above 30 degrees. He can transfer by himself… all of these thins are amazing accomplishments and no small feat. I’m sure it’s hard because when you’re living it every day you don’t notice the progress, but looking from the outside the progress is incredible

I'm middle aged and about 4 years ago, without changing my eating habits, I put on close to 100 pounds in less than a year (I actually UNDER eat). I have numerous pre existing conditions including horrible GI issues. What I like about Dr. Mike is that he, and the medical teams he shows, actually puts in the TIME necessary to properly diagnose the medical issues. All the doctors I have been to only do routine tests and then throw me out and tell me to go to someone else. I was actually thrown out of a nutritionists office after following her diet to the letter but didn't lose enough weight. She said she couldn't help me and I needed to go to a doctor! The last doctor I went to this week was suggesting bariatric surgery BEFORE doing anything else! She's skipping right to the 'last resort.' And I don't want that. With my GI issues, I think I'm asking for trouble with that surgery. Plus I don't think I'm heavy enough that it requires such a drastic measure!

When I was working my tail off to lose weight I only lost 13 pounds or something around there and was truly bummed about it. I have atypical anorexia and when he described everything he does to get a lower number on the scale, going to the bathroom, no clothing weight, eating nothing beforehand or getting rid of it through other means, it just hit hard. It was shocking to realise that even people on complete opposite ends of the scale, feel the exact same way sometimes. We are all human no matter our weight.

Post Traumatic Growth, you coined a good term, Dr. Mike. I lost 93 pounds. I am at my goal weight. I cannot believe it. Talk about proud and happy and planning, that's me too. That's why I am watching videos like this. I really like to see others getting free. It is such a good feeling. I went shopping the other day. I haven't bought clothes in a store in years, only online. So I had to go to a dressing room. It was the first time I had seen myself in a full length mirror in at least a year. I couldn't believe how slender I was. I took a photo on my phone. It was a huge victory for me. So, I share this fellow's joy too. Thanks for bringing his story to us. Thanks for underlying the point that someone doesn't necessarily need this much help. Sometimes they do. But it is important to put both possibilities out there, because that way you reach more people to encourage them and give them hope.

I like when Dr. Mike says, “you may not see progress, but you still are making steps.” Because when I broke my elbow and needed surgery after I was in a cast for a long time. So knowing that I’m making small improvements everyday is beneficial for keeping a good mindset and has helped me a lot

The fat jokes about her from people that dont like her is numerous, and the media have also sunken so low showing pictures of her eating a slice of cake in order to shame her in the least flattering way.
