When faced with an epic plastic problem, what do you do? Kevin Kumala has created a new “plastic” bag made from cassava starch, which is 100% biodegradable, compostable, non-toxic, and even edible. Kumala claims the bioplastic leaves no trace of toxic residue, a point he demonstrates in his talk by dissolving and drinking it.
Kevin Kumala is an entrepreneur, researcher and adrenaline-seeker. His love for water sports like surfing and diving, and his resulting frustration with the amount of plastic pollution in the ocean, led him to find a sustainable solution to one of the world’s foremost waste issues. Inspired by innovative bioplastics made from corn and soy starch, Kumala drew on his education in biological sciences to create a new “plastic” bag made from cassava starch, which is 100% biodegradable, compostable, non-toxic, and even edible. In December 2016, a video of Kumala dissolving the bag in a glass of warm water and drinking it went viral. Today, his company Avani Eco produces a variety of compostable bioplastic products such as bags, food packaging and hospital bed covers. Kumala believes that is the responsibility of youth today to make the Earth a cleaner, greener place for future generations through thoughtful, socially impactful solutions.

And here in Australia, our government is forcing every company that uses plastic to stop using it as a form transporting brought shop items home. Congratulations on your skill to transform a root into reusable plastic bags and many other plastic products.

Because your government probably knows that bioplastic is not a solution to the plastic pollution. Using less plastic products is the current best solution to the problem. The environmental effect of bioplastic is still debatable as it can produce methane, use more land, pesticide, and fertilizer, etc. "Use only when you need it" may be the best advice for now.

On deep research i found this starch bag has also a petrochemical content PVA which definitely is water soluble but more dangerous because of that. Sir, please don't drink it's harmful. Try boiling that water and you will find residue in form of thick fluid.

I am looking to source a small plastic film/bag packaging for a product that I produce. Would like the material to be clear, so the consumer can see the contents. What would be the best type of bioplastic to used that would break naturally? I did some research and am having trouble finding a clear solution to this.

Amazing! But the whole idea would be far more sustainable if they were to use hemp instead of cassava!
@revimfadli4666
@revimfadli4666 4 года назад
Why would hemp be more sustainable?
@fruitarianascension6045
@fruitarianascension6045 4 года назад
@@revimfadli4666 - Just look into the growing practices of the hemp, in comparison to the cassava. For worldwide use Hemp is far more sustainable. Hemp can be used to replace all things that are made by petroleum products: like rubber, plastics of every kind, composite materials. As well as lumber, steel, and so much more! It grows super fast and produces a ton more product per acre than any cassava farm could, in way less time, with less water. Cassava production would be very wasteful in comparison, especially if used world wide.
