Hi guys, It's Frugal Fani. Did #plasticfreejuly sneak up on you? Do you need help determining which single-use plastics are okay to reuse and which should go right in the recycle bin? I did some research and have some facts to share with you that may help you to reuse or recycle the plastic that is hiding in your kitchen cabinets. First, plastics are assigned numbers based on their components. You can find the plastic number inside the triangle-shaped recycle symbol - usually found on the bottom of plastic packaging. The number inside helps you decide if you want to buy that product, reuse that empty container, or recycle it. Honestly, more and more plastic products are not accepted at recycling facilities because there is no market for them. Plastic identified with the numbers 1,2,4 or 5 are safe to reuse at home. You can store food in these, wash them by hand with mild detergent, and get plenty of use out of them. However, you should not heat these single-use plastic containers and you certainly should NOT put them in the microwave. No plastic should ever go in the microwave. When you microwave plastic, the product releases toxins and products into your air, water and food that are not healthy and not meant to be consumed.
The plastics that you should not reuse at home are identified by the numbers 3,6 or 7. For various reasons, these plastics are unhealthy, release toxins into your food and beverage, are should not be purchased or reused. The most frequently used one of these is #6 styrofoam. Styrofoam should not be heated. When heated it releases styrenes into your food or beverage, and these are toxic. So, why is it that companies serve hot coffee in styrofoam cups? Hmm, they ought not to do that. Bad companies. When I searched through all my saved plastics I did find a styrofoam tray that had housed chicken breasts, as well as 2 clear clamshell containers that I purchased at a school cafeteria. They were salad containers. I'm sad that a school was utilizing unhealthy plastics and you better believe I'm going to write a letter to the school district about that poor practice. I hope this was helpful to you. Please click Like, Subscribe, and leave any questions in the comments section. Frugal Fani says Peace!

Well done! Lots of good information! I have 2 comments. 1) Some chicken is sold not in those awful styrofoam trays but in clear plastic #1 PETE trays, which are recycleable! I choose those, since I have not gone the private butcher route like you. 2) In Fairfax County, VA, the head of the solid waste division said that plastic #6 is not currently being recycled. It gets sent to the incinerator. Check your local recycling or solid waste program. Thanks!

Hi Laurie, Great comments! 1) I will keep my eyes open for #1 trays for raw poultry, thanks. I know some meats at Aldi are packaged that way. 2) Yes, each municipality has their own plan for sorting and dealing with the garbage and recycling they collect. Broome County, NY collects #s 1-7 through curb-side recycling. However, where each # goes next is an opportunity for more research. Peace!

Thank you so much for the information!! You did it quick and so simple to understand!! I have a container with a 4 at the bottom that I use to hold cold water in my office. Now I know that it is safe. Believe me, I much prefer glass. What about the plastic container that you are drinking from in this video? You never mentioned that one. What number is it? We just bought a new Vitamix for my mom. It came with heavy duty plastic containers. I will have to check those out for the numbers they have. I would only use those for cold liquids. They must be safe if you are drinking from it yourself. Again. Thank you!!!!

Recycling (in the usual sense) is designed to make idiots feel good about themselves but is terribly harmful to the environment. It takes more energy (gas and oil) to recycle a plastic bottle than make one. (As a rule of thumb, if people won't pay you for the thing you are recycling, you would be doing the environment a favor by throwing it into the trash.) On the other hand, REUSING plastic makes both economic and environmental sense. Telling people what plastics are safe to store food in is good. Good video.

I have plastic containers that I bought in dozen...it comes in handy with you put rawp or cooked meat and keep in fridge or freezer. underneath it reads...freezer -18°. Dish wash ok and microwave heating only or microwave reheatable. So My question is at what deg° do I set the microwave or what setting is it...low, med, M High or High. If foods is room temp. How long do I need to set it...1,2,3 mins?? Thanks.
@frugalfani2006
@frugalfani2006 3 года назад
Hi Giant Whale, I don't ever put any plastic in the microwave. I understand the directions explain how to use their product, but based on my research and my experience, I transfer 'microwaveable' items to glass Pyrex container and cover with parchment paper to microwave. One thing that facilitates this is purchasing a few different shapes and sizes of glass to accommodate different microwave meals. Easy anecdotal evidence you can observe for yourself: put the microwavable container in the top shelf of your dishwasher. What happens? The heat and humidity of the dishwasher cause the container to change shape - sometimes a lot, sometimes a little. That alone causes me concern about how the microwave is impacting the material and releasing chemicals into the food product. That being said - I do use plastic containers that come into my home as freezer containers. I pre-freeze things on a cookie sheet, ice cube tray, or tin pan then transfer them to a convenient size of plastic container for storage in freezer. Depending on the item I sometimes wrap pre-frozen food in parchment paper to divide items into portion sizes - makes it easier when thawing for meal prep. I hope this info helps you decide what you are comfortable with in your kitchen. Ultimately, we need to make choices for ourselves that are sustainable and work for our lifestyle. I think every little bit helps. You are making a healthy difference. You are modeling healthy living for your family and friends. You are the change you wish to see in the world. Basically, you rock!

Well, you said #6 is styrofoam, but plastic must come in different numbers because the clamshell lunch containers were #6, too - and that's not styrofoam, is it? Or does styrofoam come in different varieties? I'm asking because I was looking specifically for #6 plastics like those in my supermarket to test out how well they work as shrink plastic. I found it very odd that I could only find #6 plastic on two items (both dessert items). The only other number I saw at all was a #1. Even stranger still - most of the plastic had no numbers on them at all. So what does that mean? Are these numberless plastics un-recyclable? Are the safe/unsafe for reuse? Or have plastic makers lobbied to not have to label plastic anymore? Or have they gotten more devious and refuse to clearly state what kind of plastic is being used? I'm not asking you these questions - just some questions I started thinking about after noting most of the plastic had no symbols or numbers at all. Things that make you go.......hmmmmm.
@frugalfani2006
@frugalfani2006 3 года назад
Hi there! Plastic without a recycle symbol that wraps around a number is: a) not recyclable, and maybe b) produced by a manufacturer that is re-shelving very old product, or the product is sourced from a nation that does not adhere to universal labeling standards. Now I have to go do some more research because this makes me want to figure out if those products could be rejected by nations whose manufacturers do adhere. And this is how we learn!!! :)

There are two forms of PS#6. One they inject air into and becomes styrofoam and is no longer transparent. The other has no air injected and is clear or transparent like those clam shells. It is really good idea to not pop them in the microwave or add any hot liquids or food in them. If there are no numbers you can test them in water to see if they float. If so, they can be recycled with #2, #4 and #5. If it sinks it the rest of the plastics. The best food grade plastic is PP #5 but glass is even better.

Plastic is a bit unstable. So how long can we use a food container before it starts to turn back into crude oil?
@frugalfani2006
@frugalfani2006 3 года назад
Hi, good question! A good rule of thumb - if your plastic container's lid no longer fits, if you used it in the microwave and it became misshapen (For the love of everything healthy PLEASE don't microwave plastic!!), or if it has food stains that won't wash out after scrubbing - you need to part ways with your plastic food container. All of these are signs that the plastic has become porous and the same way it holds on to that orange color from your Tumeric, it is also releasing 'stuff' into your food. #1 and #2 plastics are 'generally' recycled in most areas, so maybe you want to put it in the recycle bin. However, did you know only 8.5% of plastic that we put in our recycle bins actually is recycled? Yup. Money talks and this time money said "Hey, it's way cheaper to toss this stuff in the landfill and produce replacements, so let's do that instead of making these recycled plastic into 2nd generation useful stuff like playground gravel, building bricks, or rubber-like flooring mats." Be safe.

Hi Arun Kumar, Plastic with #1 - my research showed that #1 plastics are okay to reuse as storage for foods in the refrigerator or kitchen pantry. I use #1 plastic to store beans, legumes, rice, dried herbs, etc. when I buy them in bulk or make them at home. You are correct, you would not want to reuse a #1 water bottle as a reusable water bottle or thermos. You don't want to keep plastic water bottles in the car, or anywhere they get warm. Glass and metal bottles are best for using as a beverage bottle or thermos. Have a great day!

Hello Frugal Fani. I bought some plastic containers from the 99c store to plant some vegetables. These containers are made of polycarbonate. Is this safe?
@frugalfani2006
@frugalfani2006 3 года назад
Hi, polycarbonate is a polymer that does contain BPA which is FDA approved. However, we see a lot of BPA free products on the market now because there is evidence that BPA is not so safe, so I would consider not using those containers with food. FYI: plastic is a cheap and effective product that is engineered to do a good job. Only problem is - when it breaks down into microplastics it gets into our food chain and that isn't good. Did you know only 8.5% of plastics are actually recycled and made into secondary products? Yup. It costs less to throw plastic in the landfill than it does to recycle it into another useful material, so most municipalities dump it - even if you went through the process of putting plastic in your recycle bin. Best choice - don't buy plastic. Instead, reuse containers you already have, buy used ones at Goodwill or garage sales, or substitute glass or metal containers. Good luck with your vegetables! I have a raised garden bed and I can't wait to start some seeds in egg cartons so I'm ready to plant early onions and carrots when the snow goes away.

PVC is Polyvinyl Chloride Hi, PVC continues to be manufactured because it is CHEAP to produce, can stand up to many types of chemicals and uses, and is soft & easy to mold in to different shapes. All of these characteristics make it useful as a building material for toys, bottles, clothing, building materials, pipes, home decor and more. Our challenge - reduce our use and keep plastics of all kinds out of our eco-system and landfills. We know better, so let's do better!

Hi, Oh, beloved Tupperware! I grew up in a 70s household with a Tupperware celery container in the frig - it was actually celery green in color with a colorless lid. I found this link and apparently this woman tests Tupperware for Lead and Arsenic. I don't have any knowledge of this, but I do know that plastics are made of petroleum, and when they age and become porous they are beginning to break down. I personally spent my Frugal Fani time ridding my kitchen of all plastic containers and now use glass, metal, bees wax wraps, homemade waxed fabric and butcher paper for storage. Good luck and check out this info (full of ads, a little confusing and hard to follow, but she's monitized her site so that's what happens) : tamararubin.com/2019/03/is-my-tupperware-toxic-here-are-pictures-of-everything-i-have-tested-so-far-with-links-to-the-xrf-test-results/?fbclid=IwAR2fAQeLNEdhFQTS9tm8PnDyCihvrufE989IRPuYv2HTbrKKJG0-jyPanhw
