Check Out This Video About Masking - • Quick, SImple Car Mask... . - Plastidip is a rubber coating that can be sprayed from a spray can. In this news episode of Does It Really Work Auto Show, I am going to test plasti dip spray on car emblems. After being asked about this coating, I did a little search on RU-vid and found there to be quite a few videos of this. Therefore, I think it should work, but I want to test it to determine if it can be used by the average consumer, a DIY car enthusiast, but now an expert.
Plastidip can also be used as a dip coating by dipping tools into the rubber coating. I have not tried this method yet, but may be something I try later.

One huge mistake..you're not supposed to let the dip dry to the tape. You take the tape off the edging while the dip is still semi wet to ensure that it doesn't bond to the tape and come off when you take the tape off.

@greenerthumb1 when you mask of the area leave some of the car body exposed dont bring the tape too close that it touches the letters. Also spray the coats at different angles this will ensure that the letters are completely covered in plastidip and they should etch out perfectly when you go to peel them. I've used it on my rims, bumpers, fenders and the housing of my mirrors. Havent had any problems.

I don't know if it really matters with this stuff, but one solid stream when applying covers a lot better rather then spray, stop,spray,stop, less room for texture to work its way in there.

I'm sure there are a lot of different uses for it. I know other people are using it for cat emblems, wheels, and the whole cars. It can also be used on the handles of tools.

Here is an idea that worked for me. Any symbols or emblems just cover with a thin coat of grease after the plastidip dries just wipe those areas off.

amature tip: i took the tape off right after my last coat, it will peel smother and also will be easier to peel to the emblems

The distance from the can to the object has to be or is recommended to be at least 8 inches away. the closer you get the better the chance of runs and texture.

Yes, it does work for DIY consumers. Some of us have paint skills, garages, and compressors. You can't just buy a $10 can expect to magically paint your car.

Thanks Donnie. I'd add that unlike real paint, where practicing on an old hood is useful, practicing with plasti dip can be done even on a Ferrari, because it peels right off. So don't bother practicing on old car parts, just try it and redo it on your real part. One thing that hasn't been talked about too much on videos is whether there is a magic curing time window for when it cuts well across the breaks. ie, if you wait 14 hours, does it break as cleanly?

razor blade works well but be carefull. also learned that pealing the mask right away works better than waiting for it to dry. legit stuff though the only question will washing your car and scrubbing peal it off i have no idea in fear of going through the whole process of masking and redoing what to me looks great...great vid man

Worked with razor blade around emblem for me did my grill today a lot more to go im trying to remove all of the chrome off of my car and have it be chrome free i personally have never liked chrome on new vehicle's older 60s and 70s heck yea but not the newer ones where less time has been put into making them chrome

big plastidip misconception ... you need to peel with masking tape while its still wet if your going to, this insures that you don't pull the whole thing... plastidip acts a lot different than paint!

Only problem is you should peel tape and excess dip right after last wet coat. Doing it while still wet will give quicker removal and cleaner trim lines. and usually with out the fork lol.

Not to sound cynical, but what is the point if it comes off so easily. You paint your car, go shopping, someone clips it with a shopping cart and by the time you get home the wind has removed it.

After it cures for a while, it's significantly harder to remove. But, using your scenario, if you don't have the dip on your car, and someone clips it with a shopping cart, you're going to be pretty upset that you paint job is scratched, you'll be less upset that your plastidip job got messed up and you have to repaint 1 panel. cost difference, $100+ real paint, $10 plastidip

wrong way to spray... You have to start to use the spray before it goes on the targetted zone, then you have to continue your line outzone the chosen zone. That is key in order to have an even layer and a nice result...

Yea.. so u didn't have tape any of that to spray it...just spray.. then take your toothpick or plastic fork and go around the outline while it's still wet

You are suppose to take of the mask tape when the paint still i wet :) It will pill off lot more easy.

my question is what is the expected longevity? I ask because i've been using this for years. Actually right in front of my computer screen i have a steel document stand that i plasti-dipped over 2 years ago. The finish is terribly scratched and pitted. So how can it hold up to bugs, wind, washing, and environment in general? I know its a lot easier than paint...but still a lot of work for what seems to be very short term gain. Am i wrong?

I am not sure about that. They say you can peel it off later if you want to, so I'm not sure if it would hold up to pressure washer or not....good question!

it is not permanent, but if applied correctly it can sustain a good beating. I have seen it go throw touch-free car washes and being sprayed with pressure washers at point blank. You just have to be careful not to peel the edges or scratch the finish.

There are plenty of videos showing the durability of plasti dip, pressure washing in specific. Depending on the coats used, it will easily stand multiple pressure washes.
