Platinum or not Platinum 

once you get this ore you need to process it by crushing to talcum powder state then put in leach plant at the right PH and a platinum sponge will form at the filter in the bottom. Thease sponges can be sold to platinum refiners . do your research and pay small heed to me or anyone else giving you advise online. most just are guessing or repetteng what they heard from a friend or someone they met that seems to know what they are talking about. Note the chemicals used stink and can burn or kill you so be sure you know what you are doing if you attempt a leach plant. Take all precautions serriously in the near future I will have several leach plants and be doing this for the public.

Lead also bubbles when placed in hydrogen peroxide. It is nearly impossible to test for platinum without having it assayed. The test I see online are not definitive. Sorry to bust anyone's hope that their nuggets are platinum. A platinum nugget is beyond extremely rare but a welding nugget from bridge and highway work is not. So many metals can become tumbled nuggets.

Here in Oregon we have a lot of platinum but people don't know how to process it so they throw it out. I take black sand that doesn't pass through a #12 classifier and test it in peroxide. I get 50% platinum ore from black sand. If you also pick up the magnetics in black sand I tend to get about75-90% platinum just did a batch by just using a magnet on the sand people dump out of their sluices. About 90% platinum!

curious what happened? did you do the peroxide test. i found something similar. hard enough to cut glass.

did you find this in the Gila river valley... or a river valley in an area with lots of volcanics... ??? I have some and when you use the flash on your phone to take a video with and zoom in on the crystals I could see better... platinum crystals are octahedral.. two pyramids put together points facing outward... the clincher is crystals with a hopper... inward steps into the crystal center... bright shiny white metal... doesn't tarnish...

Put it in hydrogen peroxide till all the other rock dissolves. If there's small flakes and crystals eroding off that's the good stuff. Run that through a coffee filter and the powder is pure metal if it's good.The lead fizzes off too. Then you can decide how much is left of metal and crush it down and re-soak it.

do a specific gravity test on it.

well it all depends on here you found it and from that you might be able to get some information on the rock formation (in what types of condition did it metamorphose: pressure and temperature) and from there you can see if the environment resembles what platinum or what ever type of precious mineral needs to develop. Also I'm pretty sure there are chemical tests to see what you have. I might be wrong I'm only in my second year of geology and I'm specializing in oil not precious minerals.

interesting specimen with Pyrite looking metal in it. I have almost the exact same ore, and I just sent my sample in to have it tested for Gold Silver and platinum and Palladium. I think it's May 28th now, and I should have the results by June 20th. I see gold looking stuff in mine also just lightly gold that I think is mixed with some silver. Plus I have the really silvery looking stuff that looks like it could be platinum if you want to know my results you'll need to give me a like on June 20th so it will notify me and then I'll come back on here and leave you the results.

i found a similar rock but by "fishing" using a super magnet. I've ordered a nickle test. If positive it may be a meteorite. Same with yours. Break off a small piece and crush. If you have metal flakes it could be a meteorite or "platinum" ore. I suspect that you may have found pyrrhotite, a magnetic sulfide iron sulfide.

From the looks of the rock it looks like it is a mix -first look with magnifying glass for small hairs =if see hairs most likely tellurium =if Te most likely have pgms (Platinum group metals )compounds also may have TeAu tellurium gold =go to webmineral.com. /chem / Au / TeAu

@mnbvczxc Some more searching has to be done to find the motherlode but it cant be to far away its a rather large chunk not just this one piece. Couldnt have traveled that far from the source.Now I am getting very excited.

hi There crom2000...You could order a platinum testing solution..from goldfeverprospectingdotcom and search for a soltuion..I would specualate that it is hydrogen peroxide..Platinum ia catalyst that will cause a reaction to make oxygen..so it bubbles...I think they sell it for 7.95..

You might want to look it over closely. I don't think you have found platinum. Test it for Ni as you may have found an iron. meteorite. Look for depressions and a black or orange coating on it. Use sandpaper or grinding wheel to expose a portion of it. The metal flakes will be spread throughout the rock. Also there may be a distinct pattern to the minerals. I'd also expect it to strongly attract a magnet. Don't crush it! If a meteorite that would destroy the value.

Hey man MM here interesting rock send me the details of where it came from I will check my records on PT occurrences. I am thinking Galena but then the black matrix rock is interesting, my coarser pt nuggies from my claim have a black matrix attached to them.

also platinum oxidizes in air, and looks similar to lead.

Platinum facts

digplayer is right. Platinum rarely occurs larger than a grain and usually occurs as a byproduct of gold mining. The host rock looked very hard. Native silver is more rare than gold. In Silverton native silver occurs in a brecciated (broken) quarzite, uneconomical and rare. My wild guess would be bimismouth.
