LYRICS
------
No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes
No one knows what it's like
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies
But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be
I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free
No one knows what it's like
To feel these feelings
Like I do
And I blame you
No one bites back as hard
On their anger
None of my pain and woe
Can show through
But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be
I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free
When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool
If I swallow anything evil
Put your finger down my throat
If I shiver, please give me a blanket
Keep me warm, let me wear your coat
No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes

Barnes character can easily be summed up by the quote by Friedrich Nietzsche; "Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you." I think that barns spent so much time fighting "the monster" that he picked up parts of what the monster would do, and in doing so probably had some self loathing going on...but out of loyalty and duty he kept doing what monsters do...to save his platoon. It was more of a "drive" than a decision.

Poor man. He was over powered by his evil. Still he was bad, but if only he was saved.

I know Oliver Stone doesn't do "those types of movies", but I would of liked a Platoon 2 (barnes actually survived) or a prequel showing how a young Barnes morphed into the man we saw in Platoon. Despite his descent into madness, his character was absolutely fascinating. Props to Berenger for immortalizing Sgt. Barnes.

i watched the movie the other day and was thinking the same thing...that they should make a movie to show how he became like this and how he got some of his scars

Nikita0156 He was shot in the head and the surgeons took his face. He was the Captain Ahab of the movie. Ahab hated Moby Dick for taking his leg and longed for revenge while Barnes hated the VC for taking his face and wanted to kill them all. If you want a source on how Barnes came to be check out Moby Dick.

I personally can't hate the character Barnes in platoon, yes he's a brute but he is obviously a very messed up and damaged person (as is suggested by his appearance) being hardened through years of hell, he is willing to do anything for his Platoon to survive, his hate for the enemy and even his unethical murderous behavior seems to be his way of both coping and making sure his platoon remains alive. This obviously doesn't excuse his misdeeds (can't really defend that little girl part) but under these bizarre circumstances it is hard to imagine someone being ethical with little to no moral or psychological support being available and having the expectation from everyone looking up to him and expecting him to lead be in control. Well thats my 2 cents worth on the character Barnes, what a horrible conflict Vietnam was. Fantastic tribute by the way, very very emotional!

Barnes was a proper wartime Platoon SGT and an immensely high-value asset - Make no mistake, he is absolutely what you want in a conventional warfare situation. He would be problematic to handle in any kind of conflict below that level. The paradigm here is that Vietnam was not really a conventional war - from the US perspective it was more about 'hearts and minds' and trying to ensure stability and political restoration, albeit the intensity of combat in this film that his platoon were thrust into does lend itself more towards the conventional warfare spectrum. This is where the real depth of the film comes out. The 'strategic' objectives may have been 'hearts and minds', stability and peacekeeping (i.e. winning the trust and support of the population - through simply not outright slaughtering them), whereas this probably didn't filter down well at the tactical level where it became an endless maneuver warfare battle with each area commander trying to apply conventional operational art and be seen to be performing well as an officer and commander. Herein lies the great dilemma that no doubt plagues many soldiers. They were told they were going there to 'help' (in line with the political and strategic objectives), yet it became everything but that on the ground. This seems to be a characteristic of the Americans in conflicts over time. The strategic objectives are rarely understood or operationalised well at the tactical levels. Ellias would have been a perfect Platoon SGT in every scenario within the spectrum of conflict below actual conventional war. He is the guy you need more in settings like Afghanistan. He would have been perfect for the Vietnam theatre had the Americans correctly applied operational art, planning and understanding of the broader mission at all levels.

barnes is my favorite character in platoon, just for the fact that this is how every soldier should be in real life, a mindless son of a bitch willing to do anything to defeat the enemy and surivive, without that annoying feeling of constant fear clouding his judgement that stops him from performing his duty , besides his scars are badass.

I had a few Plt. Sgt's similar to the Barnes character. They were all the Nam guys who decided to make the Army a career. Although they weren't violent and shitty with us, we knew better than to piss them off and we respected them.

None of you understand the idea behind Barnes.I don't think anyone who hasn't lived this shit can truly comprehend why he was as he was.All of us can sit back and comment on how he did things and yes many things he did were wrong but we will never be able to say with 100% certainty that we wouldn't have done what he did."Going to war is like having a mirror turned on you.You see the real you.The animal willing to do anything to survive. The monster who kills the innocent with the guilty."-Nate Walker.

I think it is better that we sit and comment on his character and ideology as being morally wrong than going into war without having explored these ideas and become animals because we don't have any prior memories/ideas to refer to so we can deal with the situation the right way. Regardless of what happened to him let us just use it as an example of wrongdoing and aspire to be better

Absolutely Outstanding RattPoison80! You captured the character of Barnes to the letter! Not to mention the greatest performance of Tom Berenger’s career to date. The manner in which you perfectly blended the movie and the song flawlessly redefined both song and character, while retelling the story of both and the untold story of each. The production values of your video are much to be proud of. As a huge fan of the movie, subject matter, song and character Barnes you have my thanks and respect.

Arthur J. Birmingham Thank you so much, it really means a lot to me. I put a lot of passion and heart into this video. I felt such a tragic character should be shown for who he really is, what no one sees, and what he does not show. I seem to always have a deep attachment to flawed & tragic characters like this, which most viewers see as a horrible person and a 'bad guy' or villain. Perhaps it is because i see some part of myself in them. I've really wanted to do another video like this again, but just haven't found a character that both quite strikes that tragic heart string with me, and has enough good material in the movie to work with (it's usually only one or the other). I've found a new character in a movie that has evoked similar passion and with whom i can relate with on some level, though their tragedy is not shown as well, and is more hidden & mental. With him i will just have to express my views of his subconscious through writing instead of video, unfortunately. I will still have him in a music video, hopefully my next one, but it won't be as serious or 'searching' as this as the material just isn't there for it. Thanks again, and have a good one.

It’s so fascinating to look at the character of Barnes when one is doing so after having gained a certain level of life experience. As we grow older, most of us are able to step back and see that “bad guys” or everyday jerks aren’t as one note as we think they are. Maybe we see a moment of genuine humanity in them. Maybe we see a picture of their family, and we realize that someone loves them too. But we’re forced to recognize that they ARE human. That doesn’t mean that jerks don’t need to be called out, or that bad guys don’t need to be stopped. But MAYBE being aware of their humanity gives us a chance to get through to them. Great video, and a fitting song. This was a well done tribute to one of cinema’s most complex “bad men”.

Amazing tribute. Someone needs to say it. Platoon and full metal jacket blow apocalypse now away. ESP platoon. Charlie sheen was incredible. Tom berrenger is easily one of the top five movie villains of all time. Not one bad apple in the entire cast. Unlike apocalypse now this movie cuts out the Hollywood pseudo philosophy about war. It's puts you in the soldiers place it allows you to sympathize with the Vietnamese as well as the Americans. we could even empathize with the most ruthless members of each army.
