@@undersurfacechannel what do I do if they aren’t big enough to get out of the breeding box at 14 days? Another one of my platies gave birth and it’s day 10 and they still look the same. They’ve only gotten a big fatter.
I just found babies the other day (unexpected as I got two females, and this video was so helpful in showing their growth stages. Beautifully shot too!
Thank you so Much ,I just wanted to see this video because my fish was sitting not playing and I saw a baby fry and I was like am I imagining but when I took to a different breeding box I saw it and I was like OMG
@Clint Mackenzie well I would also wish people would leave their reasons for disliking in comment section so I´d be able to improve that in future... but anyway thank you very much for your kind words and support, I really appreciate it :)
what a video with great time and efforts invested! perfect explanation matee i just have had a female laying fries. 2 female platys and 2 guppys in a 17.2 gallon planted tank. it'd be a great help if you can tell if the fries would live in this environment or i need something like a breeder tank in it..
@@undersurfacechannel Despite having a few set backs so far it is going well. I have a male born in my tank who is handsome and mellow, and despite all of my original females dying, I have introduced a growing batch of new females. It is a lot of trial and error but I am seeing positive results. My goal is to breed a batch of purple elephant ear guppies. 🙂
That is the way I am doing it as well :) Selecting the best ones, and selling the lower quality fish to my friends with Oscars and Turtles... It is much better way than calling the fish especially considering the high nutritional value of it if you feed them high-protein diet :) Thank you for your comment, and have a nice day! :)
@Andres Armenta thank you very much! With platies I don't really mind it as they are not that much inbred and also females get to breed with multiple males, not like with guppies when I particularly select one male to breed with all females... So I would not say inbreeding would be a problem here :) But its definitely good to outcross them once in the while...
Great informative vid and channel. I'm just starting with platties and watching our females plumping up. I also love seeing how you have a clever breeding notebook with pictures.
@Emily Quincey19 mostly focus on the general body shape, shape of the fins and general vitality... Try to choose fish that have healthy beautiful coloration, robust and uniformed body, healthy fins with no damage and of course super active and vital. Try to avoid fish that seems paler (it is one of the sings of fish being unhealthy), avoid fish with weird body shapes (mostly genetic defect), ripped fins - these fish are usually bullied and also avoid fish that are not very active, just swimming passively at the top or bottom of aquarium... I hope these tips help and good luck with choosing :)
Aww back then this species was my fav fish. I love em absolutely. They’re kinda prone to mysterious death somehow, in that they disappear slowly all of them... idk why
@@reggiefishandfun770 Yeah thats true :) but maybe you can start shooting from the beginning and take us "viewers" through whole process :) would be cool...
I have had my frys for about 4-3weeks not and they haven’t even grown. I’ve given them food 2 times a day, cyclops and flakes. I also change their water regularly
@JOUSEFyuh Yuh they have grown a little bit and will grow don't worry :) In case that you have lower water temperature, they will grow slower, but will have increased lifespan. If you would increase water temperature, they would grow quicker. Just be patient and you will see them grow don't worry! :)
I’ve had mine for about 2 months now and they haven’t grown as much as the ones in the video. Must be because of cold water too? I do have a goldfish so water needs to be kept cooler
I have a kind of weird question haha. I have a female platy who’s been pregnant and is supposed to give birth in maybe a week. the male keeps getting it on with her today and she seems to be swimming away each time. Even tho I just put them back together because I had them separated for the last few days bShould I separate them again or is that normal? Lol
What did you do so she got pregnant tell me to do the same, I have a question if I can take that bucket and put a male Platy and a female Platy in it and how long should I keep them there until they make babies
Great video thank you for sharing. I bought 3 female Bumblebee Platy fish from my local pet store and have had them for 3 months now and every month they give birth ! They have not been with a male since I bought them 3 months ago is this normal? Thanks
A female platy fish can be pregnant up to 3 times (over 3 months timeline) after a single mating. A guppy fish can be pregnant six times after a single mating. 😮
@Jun Hao yes I have malarian trumpet snails, ramshorn snails but I currently do not have any placos, but you can definitely get some for your platy tanks no problem :)
@RWX you definitely can if you would get yourself group like 10 of them. Just don't overcrowd it and make sure to have good filtration a do regular water changes :) Also remember male to female ratio 1-2 and you can feed fry variety of food. Powder fry food, baby brine shrimp or crushed fish flakes are definitely most popular. If you have some high-quality flakes you can simply put them into small plastic bag and keep squeezing them until you got them to powder and feed it to fry that way :) Hope this helps, and in case you have any other questions, feel free to ask!
Hi, am first time having fish. my fish is pregnant. While separating from other fish, for setup that time also the water needs to be in perfect condition. What about heater and filter it’s required r not
Do you have any tips for feeding fry that won’t eat? I gave them some egg, fish flake, and crushed up fish food, I can’t tell if they ate or not they’re just laying at the bottom of the breeder box, and they’re about 1 1/2 days old. Is that a bad sign? This is my first and unexpected fry batch so I’m very inexperienced with caring for them
@Jimmy Wise make sure you´re feeding them food they can fit into their tiny mouths... if they are healthy they should be moving and free swimming immediately or worse case after couple of hours... What sometimes happens is when they're born in breeding box, female will give birth to premature fry because of stress and in that case they might be lying around at the bottom for a while but they should definitely be free swimming next day. If you would be able to hatch baby brine shrimp, that is the best food for fry but you´ll be fine with crashed flakes or egg yolk as well :) Hope that helps...
@@undersurfacechannel Ok thanks so much! Im pretty sure she gave birth prematurely because I just got her from the fish store the same day she had her fry she was probably stressed from the trip, but right now 1 out of 3 is swimming and looks really healthy its been eating egg yoke and brine shrimp the other two are eating too but just aren't swimming
I wonder how to tell the difference between a female swordtail and a female platy, because my female swordtails look a lot like your platies. I also observe that my swordtails overwhelmingly have female offsprings with F/M ratio of 5:1. I wonder whether because I keep them on the cold side of their temperature range, at 70~72 F.
@Humphrey Appleby well, they are the same family of fish... swordtails can cross-breed with platies so by naked eye it is very difficult to tell the difference in females... important is their genetics. If you would put female platies and female swordtails together, it would be really difficult to separate them again. Therefore always make sure you ain't got platies and swordtails in the same tank. That ratio sounds really interesting. I also keep plates on the cold side but do not have such a crazy ratio... I'd be really curious what can theoretically be causing that :)
@@undersurfacechannel where can I give them away? I think it’s about time that I give them away because if I keep them with my adults any longer it’ll stunt their growth (it’s another batch)
i’m that yeeted fetus Yea, there are always some swimming around... I only separate fry once or maybe twice and the rest of the time I leave them to do their own thing... and some always survive hidden in plants 😊
@Samruddhi Gaikwad it is very simple. If they are sexually mature - around 2 months old or more all you have to do is look to the shape of their anal fin. Females have it shaped as Triangle and are usually bigger than males in size and males have anal shaped like a tube/stick called gonopodium :) It really is very simple to figure out, but I also explain it and show pictures in my other video about platies in case you'd have problems figuring it out :) Hope this helps...
@@undersurfacechannel Thank you! I only managed to get 2 Baby Platys alive the rest died.... I think they are smaller than usual.... is it normal? They are too transparent... 🤔🤔
Hey, it is very simple. Females have their anal fin shaped as triangle. Males have "gonopodium" instead that they use for breeding. It looks like stick/tube... If you check my other video about platies, it is clearly explained over there with pictures :)
Dude. I set up a tank, dechlorinate. Let it run for an hour or two and then just put in the fish. Ive never ever ever aclamated a fish, or cycled a tank. And i havent lost 1 single fish and i have 10 tanks, everything from galaxy rasboras, to pea puffers and plattys to shovel nose catfish and oscars. Why keep fish in quarenteen for 2 weeks? Jut make sure you do a watwr change every singe week for a month that first month, because beneficial bacteria is still building up. And then your good. I water change my tanks every 2 to sometimes 4 weeks. Through out the old whives tales omg
And “dude”, I drive all the time and have never been in a car accident, so I guess that means it is pointless for me to wear a seat belt… Precautions and redundant safety measures are not without reason. It’s good that you have fish safe tap water and the stock you get are all healthy enough. That doesn’t mean “extra efforts” are unwarranted.
