Grew up in Kazakhstan in a Plautdietsche family. It's kind of funny to understand someone from the other side of the world speaking language of our common ancestors. :)

Mennonites in Kazakhstan?? I had no idea. Feel free to share more details.
@CheburashkaGenovna
@CheburashkaGenovna 2 года назад
@@johnschmitt9158 Our ancestors came from Holland to Western Prussia and some generations later, at the end of 18th century, to Ukraine being invited by Catherine the Great, where they lived in prosperous colonies until Russian Revolution. Being suppressed during the Stalin Era they went together with retreating German army during WWII back to Germany. In accord with agreements of the Yalta Conference, as "former Soviet citizens", they were delivered by Allied Forces to russian authorities and sent into banishment in Siberia. Some survived Stalinism and some years after his death, driven by the longing for being among "their people", they found relatives and friends, who were sent into banishment to Kazakhstan at the beginning of German invasion of the Soviet Union. This is an another story of an "wandering tribe" of Mennonites.

I live in Canada--my parents came here from Chihuahua. My biggest regret is that I never learned Plautdietsch, which is ironic for me because I very much enjoy languages. (I'm pretty good at French.) If there were a place that taught Dietsch here, I would have wanted to go there. Growing up, we often drove down to Chihuahua to visit the grandparents. I was usually miserable, both because of the heat, and of being unable to talk with my dozens of cousins. I sincerely hope that we see an explosion of Plautdietsch literature, both original and translations of books in other languages.

I enjoy the low German . Mine is very rusty, but I understand it ok. I spoke German always growing up, but my younger siblings started English because of school. I kept speaking to mom and dad when I could. My late wife was French and my kids learned French and English. Dad passed, mom her German became a “ germ/English mix. So I had to make trips to Manitoba spend time with my relatives just to keep what little German I have left . My cousins keep joking with me I should just marry a German speaking girl , she would keep my language lol. Who knows what God has in store but ....... let’s see what life does. Thank you for a god video, I enjoyed listening !

I just discovered your channel and love it. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the difference between Plautdietsch, Pennsylvania Dutch and Diets, but I guess it's just different dialects spoken in the northwest of mainland Europe during the reformation. As a Dutchie, I find it fascinating that I can understand part of what you are saying without translation, but feel that you are speaking Swedish or incomprehensible German at other times. Thanks so much for keeping the language alive and for being so funny whilst doing so :)

Faszinierend! :)

I would say the main thing we low German mennonites have to improve is to be more open emotionally. I’ve lived my entire life in a Mennonite community and I know barely anyone who is open with their emotions. I think most of us are taught as children that our emotions are bad and to ignore them and that’s led to us being an extremely repressed people. I know I am and breaking out of that shell is very difficult.

About the sawdust on the floors... I remember my mom doing it after she cleaned because she had a cement floor and it probably helped with absorbing moisture after moping it and to keep feet warmer. Lol definitely not because it looked pretty 😂🤣 Some people even had dirt floors. Some people are still doing it even though they have nice floors but they’re only doing it out of tradition and not knowing the real reason behind it. I remember the pinole smell. Brings back memories.
@DietscheMejal1
@DietscheMejal1 6 лет назад
Yes that makes so much sense! My parents had a dirt floor for the first years when they were married and she also added pinol so it’s would smell good 😂 mom says that they added sawdust to the floor because my grandpa was so concerned about the floor getting damaged when people came over to visit 🙄😂

It's Mennonite German. Basically, force Dutch farmers to speak Low German for a couple of centuries then kick them over to Russia for a little bit. After that, ship them off to the Americas around the 1880s. It's practically a creole. Greatest disappointment of my life was being a language nerd and finding out that my grandfather and his siblings all grew up speaking like this but didn't raise their kids bilingual.
@TheMichaelK

Like Theroa said, East Low German has a lot of Dutch influence in general as Dutch, Frisian and Flemish settlers moved to Prussia (when Hannover and Westphalia was not part of Prussia), These settlers moved to areas like Brandenburg, Pomerania (North western Poland now) and East and West Prussia. Those East Low German dialects of Low German are basically extinct in their original terrritories since the speakers wwere driven out of their areas after WW2. But those East Low German variants had always been a bit distinct to the West Low German variants. The eastern once also had Polish, Kashubian, etc influence.

Plautdietsch is a form of Low German and as such its bascially a separate language from (High) German. German: Ich habe geschlafen Dutch: Ik heb geslapen Plautdietsch: Ekj hebbe jeschloape (Mennonite / East Low German) Platdüütsk: Ik hev slapen (West Low German / Low Saxon) Dutch (Low Franconian) was traditionally the language between Low Saxon and High German which contains all the Central and Upper Francionian dialects that border to Alemannic and Bavarian. East Low German got quiet some influence from Dutch settlers, and later from High German.

haha this was really good and funny. Got here from the Yolo video and that's awesome that you have this page. I will ask my friends from various parts of Germany if they understand everything (they also speak various German dialects besides standard German). It would be cool to see a video on how the Mennonite towns look, if there are touristic things to do, and what the youth does after school or work I would guess? I feel like most reports and documentaries on the community are more superficial and this could be cool on a first hand account. Also love the food videos! Pie and soup at the same time? Interesting! Maybe have a front yard cleaning competition one day? haha and differences between the Mennonites int he USA, Canada and Mexico? Keep up the good work, I'll follow here and on Instagram! Cheers from London, UK!

Esau Farfan thank you! Great ideas, I don’t have lots of time to make videos but I hope in 2019 I’ll have more time 😊 there’s a lot of videos on mennonites but they’re always about the traditional ones which in this area where I live, are the minority so I’d like to show the other side of things 😊

In our home we speak a 50/50 mix of english and plautdietch. We call our mixed language "engdietch". My question for you. Did backlash from some of the more traditional mennonites inspire you to do some of your videos?

Plautdietsch developed from Low Prussian Low German, which was indeed Low German / Low Saxon with influence from Dutch and Frisian settlers on the Baltic sea, and later High German influence as well.

I use to think that plauttdietsch was german. Until a friend of mine at the Mennonite church I attend explained to me that Pennsylvania dutch is way different than plautdietsch. So different that nobody he knows who speaks Pennsylvania dutch can understand it. And when he does missionary work in south america, he has to converse in Spanish with those who speak plautdietsch in order to communicate. Although he can converse with people from Germany who speak german, easily.
