Play Consistent Tennis In 10 Minutes - Instant Tennis Improvements
Being consistent is the most important element in tennis. Too often, tennis players focus on hitting winners, going for big serves, trying to hit the lines and this costs them as they make countless unforced errors. At the core of every good tennis player is one thing - being consistent. Rafa Nadal couldn't win without his consistent foundation. Novak Djokovic couldn't enforce his tactics on opponents if he wasn't consistent at what he does. Roger Federer wouldn't be the player he is today if he didn't have an extremely solid base to build from.
But how exactly can we play consistent tennis?
There are many physical elements involved in playing consistent tennis, we'll cover these in this video, however, it all starts with your mindset.
How To Play Consistent Tennis In 10 Minutes?
Step One - Having the right mindset. If you walk on the tennis court with the goal of hitting winners, blasting your opponents off the court with raw power, or plan on hitting the lines with every shot, you'll struggle to be a consistent tennis player, day in and day out. However, if your goal is to make every single ball, regardless of how you do so, you'll change the way you play tennis instantly. Having the right mindset is vital to being a consistent tennis player.
Step Two - Being free on the tennis court. We often defeat ourselves and make a lot of unforced errors from trying to be "perfect" on the tennis court.
We see Federer, Nadal and Djokovic playing flawless tennis and try to copy them. Or we play a match and think we need to play a few levels above our own in order to win. This causes a lot of tension in the body and makes us play worse. By getting rid of that feeling of trying to be perfect, you'll free up your body and mind to play the game without restrictions.
Step Three - Play with good margins. There are two main obstacles on the tennis court. The net is the first one and hitting within the confined lines is the second. By hitting with good height, you'll eliminate the net from your game. The next step is to get the ball to dip before the lines. Hitting with good levels of topspin will help you do that. Think about Rafael Nadal, someone who makes very few unforced errors. Nadal hits with good net clearance and heavy topspin.
Crosscourt vs down the line - aim around 80% of your baseline shots crosscourt. By hitting crosscourt, you're going over the lowest part of the net, hitting into the most amount of space and you'll greatly reduce your recovery.
Step Four - Hit to big targets. If you're constantly aiming for the lines, even when hitting with good topspin and net clearance, you'll make a lot of unforced errors. But if you hit those same types of shots to large targets, a few feet inside in each line, you'll increase your margins once again.
Step Five - Find the ball and then speed up. A lot of unforced errors in tennis come from players speeding up the racket too early and losing control of the racket angle at contact. To counter this, try to find the ball first and then speed up.

Learned a lot of things from your channel... 1. Track the ball consistently before hitting and after hitting. 2. Breathe in while preparing for the shot and breathe out while hitting. 3.Have the intention of clearing the net and making the bill dip before the lines 4. Aim cross-court for 80% of the shots 5. Hit the ball from low to high to produce topspin 6.Go with the mindset of hitting every ball and drop the idea of being perfect. Thank you, Simon and TTT for helping me to improve every single day...Have benefitted a lot from your content... Keep inspiring and educating...

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Simon - I have been a fan of this channel for a while but am yet to go through all your videos. I am in my late 40's and live in Aus; in the last several years, my level has dropped from an advanced to an intermediate as I struggle with injury, fitness (lack thereof) and recovery. What is required is a change of tactics and a diff mindset to win more; and that's what I like most about your channel, as it represents a combination of technique improvement and tactics development to suit all levels. This video appealed to me a lot as my mindset is to win more pts as opposed to making fewer errors; and there are reasons for that - I don't trust my fitness enough to grind through a pt and rush to finish pts early; which results in a higher risk game and poor results overall. Generally, the strategy of my better opponents is to keep me off-balance and not allow me to set-up to unleash my weapons and play first-strike tennis. A lot of 'analysis paralysis' also sets in - a common oft-used phrase is "perfection is the enemy of good" and that certainly applies to me. I'd like to win more to enjoy my tennis more; and I seek to find the right balance. I do like your channel.

I've lost a ton of matches because of the desire to look like a good tennis player with pro Federer-like form, and you busted me in this video. One of my opponents said I play like a Ferrari in a small village (hitting every shot with full power), and that completely opened my eyes. Now I strive to hit my shots at about 60% and keep them in and deep, and am now beating people in my league 6-0 6-1. This is the best video on consistency and I salute you, Simon and the team!

You hit the ball so cleanly! Very glad someone hit on the mental side of being consistent. While we all have out ideal tennis styles and there is always that "correct" shot that we want to go for, consistency is always the #1 factor in a match. @@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I'm strong technically (my NTRP is 5.0 -- I know this isn't the same system used in the rest of the world, so not sure if this means much to you). My problem is mental: I don't trust myself and my strokes enough (if you've read the Inner Game of Tennis, my Self 1 has no confidence in my Self 2). Ever since I started playing tennis as a junior, I didn't want to just win, I wanted to annihilate my opponents (especially if I thought their strokes weren't as good as mine and/or they were pushers). As a result, I developed a very aggressive style. As you correctly observe, when you play like this, there are days when you're unbeatable; far too often, though, playing this way results in tons of unforced errors. If you don't have issues of self-doubt, maybe you can just shake these unforced errors off and this approach can work. However, in my case, these errors trigger my self-doubt and I play worse. I recognized this issue recently and have been working on it over the past few months. (I've definitely seen progress, but old habits are hard to break.) Anyway, I thought you did an excellent job of summarizing the correct way to approach the game for the vast majority of people. If you have other thoughts on conquering the mental side, I'd love to hear them.

Hi Alex, hi Simon, since the French has basically been conquered by the drop shot, it would make a great video showing how to respond to this kind of shot. Seems most of the professionals would like to know either, especially when playing against djokovic. :)

Nice one coach Simon. A valuable summary reminder of what seem to be simple tenets, but at least I find difficult to put into practice regularly. One follow-up: the one about "FIND THE BALL, *THEN* ACCELERATE" seems most important - and possibly my most common mistake at the moment. Now I know it must relate to your other lesson(s) to constantly track the ball with both eyes. Yet that crucial step constantly eludes me as I "lose the ball" just at the critical moment ... any further tips on that particular step of seeing or finding the ball prior to making the forward swing?

It's a battle to stay zoned in on the ball, but try to keep the head as still as possible and fixate on the ball. With practice, you'll get it. All the best Simon

This came just in time for me - trying to 'wow' opponents lately with power shots/tight angles. Also, losing a lot of matches lately. This is just the reset I needed, Simon. As an aside, every time the hand flashed on the screen seemed random. Also, the video edits while the airplane was overhead created a descending diatonic scale in the background audio, which I'm sure was intentional.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thank you very much for your reply! I'd appreciate tactical analyses of big matches like yesterday. Matches that are talked about one or two days after they took place. I'm sure you and Alex could provide interesting content in this regard. Also a tactical preview of such matches would be great! What do you expect certain players to do. Murray could be a hot-topic! He isn't fit/at his full physical potential. He faces Verdasco this week. Your assessment could transition to your "traditional advice-clips"... to sth. like "Tactics for playing when exhausted" or so. :)

There is no absolute right or wrong in sports. only depends what you want and under what kind of situation. Lots of time, the "correct" position is not the correct one. we need to practice both the correct and "incorrect" position and send the ball back into the court. So we need to practice down the line and cross court even in the game maybe you try to hit back more cross court. It depends on how to make the opponent to be more difficult to return, not only on how easily we return.

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial sure... how about how your shot shape changes when you're court position and intent change. Ie rally ball behind baseline to pressuring ball from inside baseline. Kinda like the old System 5 concept but actually show the changes in shape during a rally.

Simon, Thank you for another video. I wanted to ask a question about the leg drive. My big problem is depth control. I find that adding the leg drive makes me hit a higher trajectory, with the ball going out, rather than adding more spin. I end up hitting the ball at 50% rather than hitting at 80% just to keep it in the court. Clearly the pros aren’t doing this and I don’t hit it nearly as hard as they do. What’s the key to generating that extra spin in order to allow me to really swing through? Thanks again

I think the legs is what most beginners ignore. The legs give you more power, favour pronation and rotation of the hips as well. Being on the balls of your feet is crucial for getting into the right position at the right time. Beginners, concentrate on your legs if you find yourself constantly hitting long, with less topspin and less power. Don't use your shoulder to muscle the ball. Use your legs.

This is flat out awesome. I am 100 percent more consistent now exactly because of what simon is saying. I was a power player and got beat by players who were worse than me. I hit it hard and flat. Id play great some days, do bad others. By making these changes and practicing to be more consitent, has saved my game and i am now playing #1 player at my university. Simply by getting every ball back, going crosscourt and being waaay more consitent having the mindset to get every ball back. Not beating myself trying to hit a hard perfect shot every time. And also because of Jesus christ helping me to play to.
