I would also suggest that once you know how to drop, if your opponents try to bang, you have to let out balls go. Too often bangers take advantage of players that have trouble letting balls go out.
Banging is a more fun strategy. Unfortunately for the bangers, once their opponent gets a little better (~3.75), it becomes a losing strategy. Learning to transition the game from fast pace to slow pace is really tough. Newer paddle technology is actually making it tougher to make the game transition because the bangers can apply topspin and drive the ball and keep it inbounds easier.

Because the non-volley zone is a unique game design feature, no one transfers to our sport as an accomplished dinker or drop shot hitter. I tell students they have to earn the right to get into the soft game by developing their third shot and reset abilities.
