"the funky drummer" James Brown/Clyde Stubblefield... i think that's one of the most notorious tunes when it comes to playing fast 16ths - with it's extended version running for more than 9 minutes... that's definitely my ultimate litmus test ;) great video!

I’m floored. I’ve always thought he was playing triplets with ghost notes mixed in. The entire album in my opinion is one of the best drumming albums out there. I can do these 16th notes MUCH easier than the triplets with ghosts. Doing smooth, perfectly uniform triplets has been the bane of my drumming existence. BTW, I accomplish fast 16th notes by incorporating the exact movements you’ve demonstrated so well. I call it the “half-assed” Moeller. My forearm moves the 8th notes and playing the “and-a” on the up swing completes quarter measure notes. Took some time but after my body accepted the mechanics I was able to incorporate ghost notes and buzzes as well. I LOVE playing drums. I’ve been able to do so much and yet it’s dwarfed by so much I cannot. I’m always humbled by you. I’m grateful for that because, for me, it’s necessary to be humbled to spur growth. Who “humbles” you? Thanks for all you do for the community.

A lot of Sublime songs use quick 16th notes that I've been struggling with. Most of the "40 oz to Freedom" album and Self-titled album. I've been playing alternating RL on the hi-hats and missing a note to hit the snare. It doesn't sound right at all, but this tip might be the answer! Thank you so much for this tip! I can't wait to try it out. Love your videos!

Interesting! I actually use this technique when I get tired while playing songs like You Wreck Me and Break On Through -- I generally start off playing every 16th but revert to the "missing man" beat once my forearm gets tired (about 2 minutes in). One way I try to disguise the "holidays" is by doing them on the beat when I'm hitting the snare. Always great stuff, thanks Stephen!

Interesting hack- made me think instantly of Charlie Watts who had this unique " stop /start method , on the hi-hat mostly, where he drops a note to play continuous/effortlessly.👄🥁

I Keep Forgetting by Michael McDonald checks in at 95 bpm. I play the one handed 16th notes way slower than that but I at least have gotten to the point where I can do them slow. That was an accomplishment in and of itself!

And to make it even easier, learn to rock that motion with the left hand on the hihats. A. The swing is funkier and B. Your backbeat is stronger. Work on it, ambidexterity frees up your expression

I also do a similar thing except when I hit the snare, the hh hit gets drowned out anyway so I eliminate the hh hit on the snare hit. I find it a lot of fun to play the rhythm w/2-hands on the hh and switch back to the single hand hh w/o a noticeable change to the listener.

I started playing Africa as a two handed ride, then switched to 4 sixteenths on the one and three beats as two and ah on two and beats 4 less , rushing and hand fatigue, gives it a smoother feel and leads into the fills better

I see many videos on one handed 16ths, but what I really want to know about is two handed 16th notes, (is that what they're called)? Check out the official music video version of the song Transmission by Joy Division for an example of what I'm talking about. Stephen Morris is just incredible! I really want to learn to play at that speed for that duration. Thanks for all the videos, you're one of my favorites. Cheers!🍻

One trick for “double sticking” or 16ths with both hands is to play them softly and to practice playing them as even as possible sometimes and other times playing the right hand a bit louder.

@@johnzackarias11 im definitely not trying to argue with you. (I am not into online arguments). This Is Amazing Grace by Phil Wickham? My worship pastor has me hitting 1/16s on the hi hat. It’s at 98 bpm. I am using two hands to do it now. Is it worth trying to learn to do it with one hand?

Great video! These fast 1/16ths are tough! I'm not above cheating in the ways you describe just to get through difficult songs. It can be the difference between being able to play a song and not be able to play a song! One song my band plays that is a toughie is Goodbye My Lady by James Cotton (live version). Sometimes I can get through that song without cheating, but I'm exhausted at the end and maybe I didn't sound so good. At the gig this weekend I cheated my way through it and actually got compliments from other band members who said I played it really well! Another tough one is Going Down by Jeff Beck. That one is way too fast for me to play without cheating. I play +a1 +a2 +a3 +a4 so I'm accenting on the quarter notes. That ends up sounding pretty good. A song that is basically impossible for me to play at full tempo, that thankfully I don't have to play is Funky Drummer by James Brown. That one is about 96 bpm and I don't hear the drummer (Clyde Stubblefield) cheating at all.

Wonderful tonight is a good example BUT. The drummer is ghosting the E on the snare while the hat hand is accenting the quarter note and unaccenting the +a while doing 2 and 4 w l hand. Its a very tough beat to get right. I consider it the new purdie shuffle as far as being a measuring stick for drummers with advanced groove playing.
