Hey ~ question...I have been poking around for years learning many of these harmonic tricks. I feel pretty confident with the diatonic stuff, approaching chords with 2-5's, altering dominant chords, adding tritone substitutions, the quartal voicings, and many of the other things you refer to, often with different nomenclature, but nevertheless. I even learned Giant Steps a few years ago and came up with some really hip voicings, and then reapproached it last year again and tried some new things. That's not to say I'm like you though. My problem is that I end up memorizing the voicings whether I try to or not and I'm having a hard time applying the concepts to different things in real time without working it out. The same goes for playing jazz ~ I can come up with nice harmonizations and lines, but just can't seem to do it fast enough to improvise this stuff. I've spent so much time opening my ear and now when I hear many of these things which used to throw me before, I can see where the player is coming from. I just can't seem to keep up enough to improvise this stuff, thus I'm stuck working out things ahead of time if I want them to have this kind of harmonic richness. I wish I could do these things with enough comfortability to flow. How do you suggest I go about my practice?

West Coast cats play it because I brought it to the west coast in the late 80's from my time living with Tommy. The cliches they play here now were being played in the Carolinas, Florida and Detroit in the 80's.

Hello, KC. I am a keyboard player at my church, but I'm having trouble with applying the techniques that you show in your video. I didn't get into church until I was already an adult, and before that my main musical interests was rock. I understand the theory you present in your videos, but when I'm playing in my church band, it doesn't fit with the music. We play songs like "Alive" Hillsong Young & Free "Awesome God" Free Chapel (not Michael W Smith version) "There Is Joy" Art Aguilera These songs don't have nearly as many chord changes as you teach in your videos, and at my church I don't think we've ever used" preacher" chords (though I understand the theory behind them). I don't think I can ever think of a time where we played in the style of music that's in your videos. Though I do like that style, do you have any videos for tips in playing in other genres or styles? I feel like after watching some of your free videos I am better equipped to play at YOUR church, but not at my own. So I am nervous about paying for your other videos, because they may not apply to me. Not to sound offensive, but do you know what I mean?

Michael Nix Yes, everything that you see is broken down...and you will be able to play them in every key using the equations and formulas provided... The only exception is Giant Steps which is taught specifically with that song and format in mind... :)

Hey KC I bought the series which is amazing by the way. I just wanted to tell you in your minor adjustments video when you were in the key if Gb, you used Gb B Db Eb/Gb Ab Db for your chord on the two. I was wondering since its series 3 and we are focusing on the number three as you said lol, you can add the third which is Bb to jazz it up a bit. so instead of the B add nine in the left hand you have a BMajor 7th add 9. What do you think?

reality Just make sure you take your time... no rush, just enjoy the process... the major scale is the first step... emerge yourself in the major scale until you know it in EVERY key without hesitation...this will set you apart from a lot of musicians who are limited in some keys more than others....
