At 14:14 , the option of "PS1 Games display mode" does not exist on any of the versions of OPL I've tried. I've tried 0.9.3 1407, 0.9.3 792 and just 0.9.3. What version are you using? Also the collection of files used link in the description no longer works.
Using your numbers worked the best! Got smb working. I have pops working as standalone outside opl, as smb (thanks to this video), but I never got it working for hdd. Tried really hard. Heard reports that some people cannot get "hdd pops" to work ever. Dunno why. I made the partition __.POPS and everything. Oh well, smb will work just fine.

Running into an issue. My PS2 games from your other tutorial work and load fine. The PS1 games however aren't. Running OPL will automatically open the PS2 games, but if I flip over to the PS1 games, they won't show up until I hit refresh, and if I try to load them it fails to connect to smb. Think it's an issue with the network settings? Figured it out, I mistyped my PC's IP address!
These tutorials are super helpful, but unfortunately POPStarter always fails to log onto my SMB share. I'm not sure where I went wrong; my PS2 games all work great, and I used those exact network settings for the DAT files. My POPS folder is in the root of my share (with my CD and DVD folders for PS2 games) and contains only POPS_IOX.PAK, POPSTARTER.ELF, and one properly named VCD. My POPSTARTER folder is in the root of my memory card, and POPStarter does try to access my SMB using those settings, which appear correct. I've tried reinstalling a few times, and I've tried with two different SMB shares from different devices; one is password protected, and the other has guest access. Each time I am able to play my PS2 backups just fine, but POPStarter fails to log on at the boot screen when a PS1 game is accessed... Any help would be appreciated!
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Thanks for the reply! I was able to get PS1 games working just fine through an SMB share with my Windows PC. I still can not get them going via my FreeNAS server or a drive connected to my modem though. The only reason for this that I can think of has to do with the security protocols these devices allow versus the protocol POPStarter is trying to authenticate with, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to do more than speculate. I dusted off my fat PS2 and everything works perfectly from the HDD thanks to some help from your videos, so I will probably stick with that!

Is there some setting like the ETH prefix path in Popstarter? I'm using a USB drive in my router as a NAS but I can't share the drive directly. My folder is at \ outer\NAS\MyUSB\POPS but I can only share \ outer\NAS in my routers settings. So my OPL ETH prefix path is just 'MyUSB'. Sadly I can't move the POPS folder in the root of the share or change the shared folder. Did anybody encounter this and found a solution?
I don't have a router like that so can't comment on workaround or fixes. Even my little 30 dollar travel nano router seems to be more flexible than what you got which is interesting. Might be good question to post at ps2-home.com forums for ideas or workarounds.
So for me everything is going well, I can play PS2 games over SMB no problem and I have put the Popstarter files where they are supposed to be. The thing is that when I open OPL I don't have the option to choose PS1 games at all, it's just not there like with you. Am I forgetting something?
This older video had used an OPL daily build from ps2-home.com. Most people now prefer the "official" version from github, which does not have the PS1 tab in there.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Thank you for your response, in the meantime I actually got it working myself, but found out that due to me using a certain kind of converter that doesn't support the PS1 resolution, even with GSM, it still won't work. So yeah, fortunately can still play these games on an emulator
I've spent hours and followed every step (apart from the OPL manager part) and cannot get the PS1 games to show up at all. I play PS2 games over SMB and they all display fine, checked several times that the IP is correct, and set up the file structure exactly as shown. I have also tried the USB method which also doesn't work for me, which leads me to believe it is not a network issue (as I said PS2 SMB setup works fine) but rather some issue with Popstarter or The VCD files. I have seen other tutorials with an extra step that the game must follow a naming convention, or that the VCD must be renamed to a .ELF file. Are these extra steps that aren't in the video necessary? I also not my launcher is uLauncherELF while the one you suggest is wLauncherELF, would this make a difference at all? Any help would be hugely appreciated.
SMB for whatever reason clicks well for some users and for others not. The question is the OPL you are using supports popstarter natively or not, because there are two different branches of OPL and two different devs with different philosophies. Finally! This is perfect! Thank you. But it's still running the games with some lag. I used to run them from an USB but some people say that playing games from USB makes them run kind of slow, and since most of them said that this was the best method I tried it to see if there's any difference but it runs then practically the same for me, lagging quite a bit on cutscenes and such. Andy idea what can I do? Apart from that, excellent tutorial thank you very much.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Actually my PS2 games do run better, the problem is with my PSX games, they are the only ones that seem to have lag, specially in cutscenes but the gameplay too. I have an SCPH-9001 and I've read in forums that it should work ok on most cases. Also the games I have are all compatible because I looked at the PS2-HOME chart where all the compatible PSX gamed are for PS2. So I don't really know what is it. It's not like it's unplayable but it's kind of annoying since I know it should run just fine.
Update: :))) SOLVED!!! :( Every thing is gotta be ok, but SMB for PS1 games don't work for me. I can play PS2 games with SMB and i can see PS1 games in the OPL list, but when i launch it, it loading then say connected! Then goes strait to the ps main menu (with a memory card). I can play PS1 games through a USB though. Does anybody solved the issue? Would be happy to use SMB. I use (Modbo4.0 9000)PS2- router- PC connect.
Yey!!! Finally i got this work! But before i describe what i've changed i should clarify what was the trouble. I am using Modbo 4 PS2 (9000), connected it that way (PS2> Router> PC) Already settled SMB for PS2 games but couldn't play SMB PS1. It was USB PS1 = OK USB PS2 = OK SMB PS1 = NOT WORKED SMB PS2 =OK It booted till words connected but POPStarter shows no error and kicks out to the OSD menu after opening the POPS folder. I changed a lot of steps at the same time to get this work. Perhaps the main trouble was POPS incompatibility with OPL's (conf_elm.cfg) file. 1)I deleted all the (conf_elm.cfg) files. Before the trouble solved i used OPL_971 that needed this file to see games. 2)(Step to play through an OPL) I installed a second OPL_1875 on Usb(IT's big). Then i did the steps what this video guy did 7.24 with the "OPl Manager" to change game name to add SONY ID OPL to could see our POPS games. 2.5) Not sure if this step was needed but anyway. I changed all the VCD file names on PC to be without spaces and only capital letters as like SLUS_006.43.ROGUETRIP.VCD and short enough to be less than 32 symbols. 3) Not necessary step but makes it easier to check the result and exclude OPL influence. I created an SB.SLUS_006.43.ROGUETRIP.ELF file on my USB Flash drive for PS2. This step becomes essential if you are not going to use an OPL and wanna launch it with a uLaunchELF. 4)Not sure if it makes difference but i did this step as well. In the SMBCONFIG.DAT i typed login and password i use in my PC. 5) And this step i believe is important. PC ip in DAT files. You to understand my: Router IP = 192.168.2.1 PC IP = 192.168.2.10 PS2 IP = 192.168.2.11 And settled SMBCONFIG.DAT as: 192.168.2.10 PS 2 GTONY Password And IPCONFIG.DAT 192.168.2.11 255.255.255.0 192.168.2.10 After these steps your SMB PS1 games should start work. I have been trying to get this to work for a while but I cannot seem to get OPL to see the VCD files at all. I have tried both Space Invaders and GTA II but neither of them work. OPL is able to find PS2 DVD games just fine that are also in the share. Another issue I am seeing is that the artwork is not displaying in OPL even though I have downloaded it through OPL manager. The account the PS2 has full access to the share. I also tried the USB method and I was unable to get it to work.
@@Coldsteak I did end up getting it to work but it took me a while to find out all the places I missed something. I redid the whole internal drive installation of FHDB, move popstarter back to the hard drive, and redid the server information file. I was running into an issue with that as well since there was a margin in there that popstarter was assuming was part of the user profile name. After those were fixed it worked just fine. All network connected. Sadly the one game I wanted to use with popstarter does work with it at all and I had to find my disk copy of it to play it.
Got everything working using your flash drive tutorial, then I converted to running through SMB and I love it. Thank you. But do you know anything about changing the popsloader version? I was trying to play Soul Blade and it was glitching super bad, so I'm assuming it's the version of pops I'm using.
Hey could I do all of this but put the data/files/games on a USB stick connected to a raspberry pi like in that one PS2 OPL SMB tutorial? And if so could I use the same pi but a different USB stick for PS1 and PS2 games?

Did anybody try the router method to play PS1 games? It can get till the "LOADING POPS" screen but after that it goes into the memory card browse menu.
My tp link travel router is a router so yes it works. If you can get smb share to work with pc and ps2, then using a router to share the games should work as well.
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia Maybe I'm missing something in this process. PC to PS2 SMB share of PS1 games worked flawlessly. But now I'm using the simple USB method to play PS1 games, and it just works. Playing Resident Evil 2 Leon, and so far have no issues.

I am getting couldn't find mc/POPSTARTER/SMBCONFIG. Please what could be the problem, I can see my games but once I click to run, it shows the above error. Please help
i have everything setup right from what i can see but every time i press play it start to load popstarter and on SMB connecting it just say LOGON failed. and just quit. don't know what's with that.

I did everything in the tutorial, the games show up in OPL under PS1 games but when running it shows a black screen and then it goes back to the browser and just shows memory cards
Nice video man!! it helped me a lot, but is there a way to play PS1 games having the console conected through component cable? when i launch a game the PS logo shows but then is just a black screen and if i put the AV cable then the game comes on screen, i guess that is something related to maximum resolutions that the PS1 supported and the minimal supported by the component cable.
Great tutorial as always. I´ve tried this on my BC PS3 , but it just goes back to homescreen. Is it possible on the BC PS3? Everything else works on OPL with SMB except HDD. ;-)

Im having an issue where is says logon failed. my ps2 games run fine but cant the the ps1 games to run ive double checked the dat folders to make sure the ips lined up with the ones set in opl and still havent got it to work

Ok I had this working once before but now it won't. I can share, no problem, a folder on my desktop. However, I have so much data that I moved it all to a folder on my external usb Hard drive. Now for some reason I can't share to guest. I select specific network share and type guest, read/write, click share. IT SAYS that is is now sharing but I cannot access it. I go back into the share thing and the guest I told it to share to is missing (like it didn't save it). Again it all works fine on a folder on my desktop. I just can't Share the folder on the usb hard drive anymore. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Dear PPM, first i want to say is thank you very much for this video and i've done exactly the same, because i wanted to play the castlevania ps1 games on my usb stick on OPL. But when i open it on OPL, i get a dark screen. I only hear sound that's it. I have to say that i have a pal system and the roms are mostly ntsc. But i have a 4k panasonic led tv. and i use component cables. Can you perhaps tell me what could cause this problem ? Thanks in advance.

I don't get it. If I use an older or newer OPL I can get PS2 games to run but no PS1, but if I use the exact download he uses in the video I get a black screen - on both a fat and slim PS2. However if I direct run OPL without the Popstation folder on my memory card from my USB the elf will boot. The only thing I am trying to do differently is run it through my network (Router + Switches) vs direct to PC. I have tried off of one of my computers shared to "Everyone" or from my NAS. It seems to perhaps do with something with the Popstation folder perhaps, but I don't really know.
Nevermind, I tried a secondary FMCB I have and it appears to work and from my NAS too, don't ask me why - I suppose I'll have more troubleshooting to do.
So, I got up to the actual LAUNCHING of PS1 Games. My IPCONFIG and SMBCONFIG match my settings used for OPL PS2 games (which work perfectly) but I ALWAYS get SMB LOGON Failure on PS1 games...

Hey my friend. I am trying to get this to work since 2 days. Everything works fine until a specific moment. Ps2 works finde over smb, ps1 games get shown. Everything alright. But when popstarter tries to load the game, it gets stuck at some Moment and says "no ps1 cdrom" and thats about it. I tried many other vcds, even ones from people on the Internet that work for them. There is literally NOONE on the Internet mentioning this error. Any idea?
I set up PS2SMB two days ago for PS2 games, and it works fine. I followed all the instructions in this video, but I have no "PS1 Games display mode" option and PS1 games don't show up.

I believe you need the SLUS#'s then title of game. Try renaming the vcd file either pc or ulaunch.elf. also if opl doesn't show the ps1 option check your settings and enable it to auto or manual
Great tutorial my friend, however I tried this method as well as the usb method to play spiderman 2 enter electro but it is very glitching in graphics while gameplay so any help from you would be much appreciated
Try SMB, but if that doesn't work, maybe look into mechpawn and play a cd-r burnt disc...or go old school and get real ps1 with tonyhax and no concerns there.

For me I'm trying to get Resident Evil 1 running, which is two discs. When I drag the .cue file to cue2pops, it tells me that it does not support multi-track discs. Should I use CDmage of PSXVCD? Tried CDmage, it didn't give me an option to save anything when following this guide ( www.ps2-home.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=41 ). Currently trying PSXVCD and will report with results, but I figured I should ask.
Having an issue with OPL. It seems this new OPL doesn't accept the old ps2 configs or saves. I can't seem to figure out what the issue is. All of my PS2 games boot to a black screen. I updated OPL from 0.9.3 stable to the daily build you mentioned. Also I noticed the tool Cue2Pops doesn't seem to convert any of the games that I've found that look like this: Game(Title1).bin Game(Title2).bin Game.cue Help would be much appreciated.

I’m confused about what mode to choose for the VCD files. If playing over a network share from a USB drive, which do you choose: network or USB? What format would I choose if I wanted to then move files to a micro SD card on a raspberry pi for SMB access?

@@ProjectPhoenixMedia I fixed it, the problem was I have a PAL PS2 and the games were NTSC-U but I used a converter that turn all my NTSC games into PAL and now the games are color.
So I can’t get opl manager to pull up my ps1 games, I’ve followed the tutorial from beginning to end multiple times but nothing makes my opl manager pop up the games any tips?

Is Popstarter just an emulator right its not running native as a PS2 would a PS1 game? So in that sense is it better than running an emulator say on PC or raspberry pi?
It's an emulator from what I researched. Is it better than PC or raspberry pi? Not sure, but I think PC and raspberry pi can do way more cooler stuff with filters and plugins that you can't do on ps2.
Really crazy I want to play HELLNIGHT and when I burn it to disc the aspect ratio is off with no way to fix. Then when I load it in Ps2psxE for some reason the letters are all jumbled in the text when I'm picking up items etc it's completely unreadable with some audio error too. (But the screen is ok) now my last bet is popstarter, this is an emulator right? In OPL I can't get the PS1 games to show in the menu. I put them in the CD folder. Even when I put Ps2 games on using USBUTIL2.2, those games don't show but the under 4gb ones do. So much effort. Hope I can sort it soon, what am I doing wrong here?
Hello. Do you know if there's a way to fix PS1 games aspect ratio in popstarter? They look slightly squashed, not real 4:3, but more like 5:4 or even more squarely. I have a PAL PS2 running through RetroTink. PS2 games look fine, but PS1 games aspect ratio is not quite right. A little annoying.
I'm not sure how to fix that, see the popstarter pages at ps2-home or bitbucket for any tips. I am a NTSC user so I can't comment on PAL games and the visual aspect unfortunately
@@ProjectPhoenixMedia I can't access ps2-home. They seem to have blocked the whole of Russia (I wrote the ticket to unblock the network, but they don't answer). By the way though I have PAL PS2 I only run NTSC games.

i followed your tut tonight and here's a few things things: - maybe you forgot to link the text tutorial www.ps2-home.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=326 - 6:17 the gateway is not the PC's IP address for most people it's gonna be 192.168.1.1 the IP Addr of their routers. - this PSXVCD tool i found way better than CUE2POPS.exe (windows) www.ps2-home.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=2895 everything works except for the artwork but will work on that later .. now it's time for some SotN first.
