I've watched so many videos on how to do pinch harmonics and no one has explained more clearly than you have. I've probably watched about 8 or 10 vids and this one is what finally got me to understand exactly how to do them... THANK YOU GUITAR SAGE!!!!

EVH actually did a demo on a video as well. What he does is pickup which frets are the best spots to hit and put his finger about halfway down and it would squeal. The same way you did the white wedding intro.
Oh my good lord, I've been trying to wrench one of these out of my guitar for far too long and failing. I've watched a bunch of RU-vid videos and completely understood what I'm supposed to be doing, but with no success. Your tip about plenty of overdrive was the key. You've unlocked my squealies and for that I'm enormously grateful. You, my friend, are awesome. You're now also top of the pile when it comes to tutorials I'll be following.
Some of the guys that come to mind when I think pick harmonics are George Lynch, Jake E Lee and Zack Wylde. Eddy of course does the pick harmonics, tap harmonics, natural harmonics and a few with the whammy bar that probably don't have a name.

AWESOME! I had asked for help with this very thing and finally found this video/lesson. My problem with thumb-muting is fixed! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Especially the tips for adding vibrato and bends...it really does make the squeals sound more musical and I can fit them nicely into my noodling and solos! My success rate has improved from about 10% to 60% in less than a week. Gonna keep practicing it...thanks!
I never heard the jive "Squealies" or "Pseudo/Fake-Harmonix". Ive always taught them as "Pinch Harmonix", in the NYC (Kings-Queens-Bronx, NY/Bergen, NJ) Metro Area and have met kids from Frisco Bay/Bay Area call them "Skid Harmonix". Pretty cool hearing diffetent jive for the same jazz

Very cool to watch you walk us through this technique. You make learning fun. Great mix of humor in with your instruction. I do feel like you maybe could've allotted a little bit more time waiting for me to like & subscribe. I'm slower than most of these mach 5 speed whipper snappers.

About 20 years ago, while messing around with my guitar, I accidentally 'discovered' harmonics by inadvertently touching the desired string with the meat on my palm of my picking hand. Then it took about a month to figure out how the Hell I did it. (I'm completely self taught....I have no clue what I'm doing) I'm so conditioned to it now, that I can't do it any other way.
Question my man: Is it important to have a pedal when trying pinch harmonics? I ask because, as of yet, I don't have a pedal, and I'm not sure whether that's a necessity for those, or if I still just kind of suck. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I can just about play a pinch harmonic on an open string most of the time but I have to pick in exactly the right position. If I fret the string then the point I have pick to get the harmonic moves towards the bridge. In this video looks like you get harmonics no matter where you pick the string. How does that work ?
Don't know why - but as a novice at this I'm finding it easier to get these harmonics on up strokes, using my middle finger behind the pick, instead of with my thumb.
Carson Dan If you've not nailed this yet, whack the gain up to full and just keep trying until it squeals. Having your pick at a 45 degree angle to the string seems to help, and you don't need to hit the string hard.
Is it just me or is he flicking the pickup switch unnecessarily. He will flick it up start talking then flick it down and he flicks it up again several times. If you know your going to use the bridge pickup why keep switching it up to the neck position? Must be a habit of some kind.
This is what a non-Metal guitar player would call them - Hard Rock & Metal players just call them pinch harmonics. TIPS = you need an appropriate distorted tone - and new strings sing better ;-)
