This guitar lesson teaches the basics of pinch harmonics, also referred to as artificial harmonics or Squealies. The technique is used by tons of players including Zakk Wylde, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Billy Gibbons and more. It's relatively simple and once you get the hang of it you will most likely be able to add them to your playing at will without really thinking about it much. Feel is the important thing here, it may take a little while to get it, but once you learn what it feels like it becomes a very easy technique to do.
Please go to the main site at www.GuitarLessons365.com for many more FREE video guitar lessons for players of all levels. Your support at the main site is what will enable me to continue these free lesson updates. THANKS!!

LOL... Everyone says to just keep practicing and you'll get it..... I think the correct thing to say is "Using these steps, keep blindly trying to do it and maybe eventually it'll happen."

I was only able to pull a half assed low volume squal. I think giving too much thumb will take away the loudness and power of the squal.

A few added tips for players to consider: Sometimes you really are doing it correctly and the problem is with your action, frets, fretboard, intonation, or the neck. I've always incorporated pinch harmonics into my playing style and have been able to do them well since I was about 17 years old (now 28). One of my favorite guitars to play sQueals on has always been my 1979 Ibanez Iceman that's loaded up w/EMG 81 & 85 pickups (*side note: Active pickups aren't a requirement to do pinch harmonics or anything. I actually prefer a hot, passive pickup these days but when I was a shred-obsessed teen, I usually dropped EMG's in everything). Since the Iceman's an old guitar that's had a cracked neck repair job done on it before. ..it has intonation issues quite frequently. When your action starts to slip (caused by a gradual bowing of the neck) the fret wires will catch the string, creating "fret buzz" that prevents the artifical harmonic from ringing out after the side of your thumb + edge of your pick has grazed the string. On my Iceman, this problem occurs the most on the bottom 3 low strings. It's frustrating, for sure. Especially because I love adding a nice low E string pinch harmonic to a heavy riff. On any other guitar I can do P.H. on any string, any fret...with no problems. On the Iceman though, because of the cracked neck and bad fret wires, I'm restricted to doing pinch harmonics on primarily the top 3 high strings. This is just something to keep in mind for any novice players out there or even intermediate players who have noticed that sometimes they can squeal really well and other times not at all (especially on individual strings). Granted there are obviously "sweet spots" on every string between the bridge and neck pickup where artificial harmonics are easier to bring out, the knowledge of which should be studied and applied...but that's not what I'm referring to. What I speak of are problems with the guitar itself. So once again, if you feel like your performing the technique correctly and are able to do pinch harmonics at some places and on certain strings but not others... Check your guitars: * Action/Intonation *Frets *Fret wires *Bridge saddle height *Neck for any cracks -Also for any hairline cracks near the fretboard *If your using active pickups, check the 9 volt battery and make sure it's got a good charge to it Also... -Use your bridge pickup -Try using the "Dunlop- Jazz 3" picks for doing pinch harmonics with. Also works wonders for your alternate picking technique -Use a high gain distortion -Make sure the volume and tone knobs for your bridge pickup are turned up all the way -Study the way your fingers grasp the pick as well as the vibration of the strings and how they react to different picking methods -Listen for any fretbuzz Don't get bummed out or give up if you don't get the desired results straight away. You'll eventually get it down and it'll become effortless...

@nyanrlz

1.hit string with pick(pick the note). 2.hit the string lightly with thumb so the vibration is less, therefore the screaming effect. I can't do it, know the idea but can't produce the desired sound QQ.
@konanarcher
@konanarcher 9 лет назад
put your amp on high gain its impossible otherwise
@AximVidya
@AximVidya 8 лет назад
Turn everything you can all the way up. Tone and volume knobs on your guitar set to ten, bridge pickup for obvious reasons, gain on your amp at ten, master volume as high as your neighbors will tolerate. Now you fret a single note and strum and pinch somewhere between the pickups. If you can't hear a harmonic, move your right hand a millimeter up or down the string and try again. You have to be very precise in where you do the pinch in order to get it to sound as clear and defined as in the video, but you should at least be able to find the harmonics. Once you find them you need to work on perfecting that, because you need to absolutely nail it for them to sound any good. At this point you should be able to hear them even on a clean amp or an acoustic. If you still can't get the proper sound once you know the exact position to pinch, you need to get some more gain going. Pretty much any overdrive or distortion pedal will do the trick. I for one use a slightly custom Behringer VT999 (replaced the crappy stock 12AX7 with a Mesa Boogie one) and I just love the tone it produces, but it's really up to you to find the pedal you enjoy most.

If you want to refine this technique on another level, try doing it on a non-amplified acoustic guitar. The increased difficulty will help to fine-tune your touch, and when you then go back to a distorted electric, the harmonics will jump right out. I do this with lots of different exercises and gain a good measure of improvement by not practicing things the easiest way. Just don't expect the harmonics to be so clear on the acoustic.

I do not use a pick while playing, but I have discovered a way to do it without a pick. I use my index finger, and face my nail downwards, then I use my thumb to push on the other side of my finger. This makes the flesh slightly wrap around my nail, like the thumb on the pick.

Personal experience I've had that may help newcomers with this technique: try 'digging in' more with your pick as you pick the string, as it should allow you an easier way to get your thumb to grab the string. Just dig in deep and come out upwards. Hope this helps 👍

Thank you so much... I've known the mechanics of it- grazing the thumb- for years, and when ever I bothered to try, it would be hit or miss. I was able to do it up and down the neck just now in 3 minutes just by doing one of the things you mention. You said to find a place with the picking hand that works for you. That was the key for me. On this guitar, a Jackson soloist, I found that there is a "sweet spot" so to speak, just below the neck pickup and I can hit the harmonic almost every time by picking a string in that spot. Crazy. Thanks again...

The guitar player that really grabbed my attention as a kid in the late 80's - 90's was Joe Satriani. He got squealies that I had never heard out of a guitar before. It wasn't until about 3 yrs ago that I learned how he did it. The dude really studied the guitar and all of the harmonics. The way he does it really makes the guitar sound like it is actually screaming.

Very informative thanks, I used to use the flesh part of my thumb, like right underneath the nail, but using the flesh by the knuckle seems way more effective.

Good explanation for something that is best taught in person. The greatest players can make not so great teachers. This is a good video for beginners eager to learn.
