I think Zelda fans would also really like Stormlight. It's similar in tone with heroes that represent ideals, Link Courage, Zelda Wisdom, Kaladin Honor, Shallan Truth, and Lies. The world (while very different than Hyrule) has that same sense of wonder, filled with quirky characters, and the way Sanderson utilizes his magic reminds me of using items to solve puzzles. Plus it has a gem based currency, and one of the MC has a tiny flying blue lady as his main companion
I have been saying Dishonored feels like Mistborn for a while, so glad to see the comparison shown here. Favorite games? Apart from Elder Scrolls that was mentioned here, Diablo 2 is probably my most played game (I still play it and it has been 20 years lol) I am also a very big Castlevania fan... but for that we got Twi.... come on! Dracula of course :P
- If you liked Sleeping Dogs, you might enjoy Jade City by Fonda Lee. - If you liked Jedi Fallen Order, you might enjoy Ashes of the Sun by Django Wexler. - If you liked God of War (or any game with a revenge plot really), perhaps you might like The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter? - For Mass Effect I'd say that The Last Watch by J.S. Dewes is a good match!
Great video. I love video games and books so it was perfect. Defintely would love a 2nd part. Shout out to your great editing again. The effort you put in your videos is admireable. For example this new intro was great. Sorry for my bad english
Hi there. These sound very cool. When I was young, I used to love playing the Harry Potter games, Nickolodeon Guts on the Super NES, Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega Genisis, Tiny Toon Adventures on Sega, Aladdin on both the Sega and the Super NES, and the Power Rangers the movie game. I also really liked the Super Mario Brothers game.
Sufficiently Advanced Magic is also heavily inspired in Final Fantasy/Bravely Default/JRPG games. I really recommend it, it makes you feel like you are learning magic in one of these games. Also you have great taste in games!
Love this video idea! There are so many times where I want to read books that give me the same vibes as certain video games, so this video was definitely a great help!
It’s strange I didn’t notice this video on my recommendation or subscription, I only knew about it from visiting your channel because I was looking for certain video. Thanks great content 🌹
Yeah I think RU-vid messed up and didn't send this video to anyone, because it performed pretty poorly 😅 which sucks because it took a long time to make. I'm glad you found it and enjoyed it!
@@CapturedInWords please don’t let this put you down , your content is the best and with highest quality among all other booktubers ( respect to all of them ) Best regards 🌹
so happy to see a dishonored mention! i got addicted to that game awhile back and spent forever getting all the trophies. my favorite game is xenoblade chronicles, and if anybody knows any books like it i would love to read them!
Great video as always and it seems like you've played a lot of similar games to me! Except for that Wheel of Time game, I don't think anybody else has played that.
Such a good video! Another idea, if you want an RPG style book with different classes, abilities and a character driven story, there's this unknown book serie that not many people talk about, it's called The Stormlight Archives
Man, this video made me: - Download and use Opera GX (I really like it) - Add Senlin Ascends to my TBR - Realize that Rothfuss son´s name Oot could be an acronym - Enjoy my morning coffee - Motivate myself to get out of my current reader´s block. Thank you for such a well written, planned and edited video Jay, you´re awesome.
I just rediscovered Zelda through BOTW during the pandemic. The last time I played it was in junior high on Super Nintendo. It actually made me want to write a fantasy novel because it’s so beautiful, however I believe that video games have value similar to books because they are vehicles for stories. Great video!
Man, you GOTTA read the Cradle by Will Wight. It's probably more fast-paced than most of the books you are normally recommending, but at the same time, it has a beautifully rich world, amazing RPG features and an amazing magic system. There is also an overarching world that gives a lot of space for theory crafting ;) Also, the Arcane Ascension by Andrew Rowe is a great lit rpg that has a magic university, dungeon-like towers with creatures that often turn up as bosses in rpg video games (such as Seiryu and co). Characters have classes and their magic is connected to that, but above all rpg features, the books have a really good story.
I'm glad I'm not the only person who has made an association between Wind Waker and the Earthsea books. They both inspired such a feeling of childlike whimsy in me, which I still love to this day.
If you like the older FF games and stuff like Bravely Default, you know, collect all the McGuffins and beat the BBEG, Deltora Quest is basically that in a book series. Admittedly it is for kids, but a pretty fun read. They also made an animated series of it that's pretty decent
So, I think we have similar tastes, based on your reading recommendations. I'm reading the expanse now, and they are SUPER worth your time. Also, you should read the other Gentlemen Bastard books; they are also really good.
Hold up, you haven’t played FF8?? That’s my second favourite one, it’s so good Amazing video btw dude (I don’t even want to know how long it took to edit 😂)
I would recommend the Mass Effect books. Written by one of the main writers. Retribution is set before the first game and follow Captain Anderson. Then there’s the two set between 1 and 2. Pretty good reads
I know I’m late to the party but these sounds great I’ve been wanting to read fantasy books but none of the other videos ever sold me on a novel or series like this one did thank you
If you like the parts of Mass Effect where you just wander around the Normandy and talk to your crewmates, I recommend "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet" by Becky Chambers!
This is the first time i've heard someone mention the night angel trilogy without being to say that brent week's new series is better. And as someone who liked the series (or at least the first two books) I appreciate it.
Loved this video👍👍👍, I am going to check Brent Weeks books, I liked the basic plot of Assassin’s Creed. So this one is sure to intrigue me! Also please recommend books that are similar to Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2, I like the plot idea, it was really unique. The betrayal, the action too! Also Like Hitman Contracts.
There's this book series called Wool or "the Silo series by Hugh Howley", I guess is what Mr. Internet is telling me, but anyway, I read "Wool Omnibus" years ago and it was pretty awesome and has stayed on my mind all these years later. If you enjoy things like Fallout and or games about vault/underground bunker society I think you may really enjoy it. (I'm actually really looking forward to re-reading it myself, because back when I read it it wasn't finished yet.)
Dragon Age books are awesome. First three of theme were written by Davad Gaider, the head writer for all three games. Same goes for Old Republic books which were written by Drew Carpishin
Wipersnapers present may not have heard of these, but I gotta indulge my classic adventure game history Quest for Glory - Discworld Space Quest - Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy King's Quest - Magic Kingdom for Sale - SOLD! (or fairy tales) Gabriel Knight - The Vampire Chronicles or maybe Dresden Files (or the Gabriel Knight Books of course) Conquests of Camelot - Mary Stewart's Arthur Saga Laura Bow - Agatha Cristie Harvester - Kafka I'm making myself seem more well read them I am, but I think these work.
For people who like Song of Ice and Fire or Wheel of Time (or both) then I recommend Drago Age series, it was inspired by these series so fans of those will most likely enjoy it
I recommend the SAVAGE DOMINION series by Luke Chmlenko and G.D. Pennman. It is a LitRPG book which is Fantasy with a twist. It is also the first series I've ever reread, ever. In fact, I reread it with my wife immediately after finishing it the first time. It was that much fun. If you love Fantasy stories and RPG games then this is a must read.
Halo has an extensive lore built up in the long list of novels. I haven't played Mass Effect so I don't know if the vibe is close enough for that recommendation, but sci-fi wise the books are wonderful. The Fall Of Reach is a great starting point into Halo lore
Andrew Rowe is an author I would suggest for the gamers out there. His books are very progression based, where the characters very much get better at their abilities in a measured manner, including having distinct tiers of magical abilities in his Arcane Ascension series. He's got 3 series that all are related (The War of Broken Mirrors series, the Arcane Ascension series, and the Weapons and Wielders series), and they each have their own flavor, although AA and W&W do feel closer in tone. I will say that when I first started the first book of Arcane Ascension, Sufficiently Advanced Magic, the very beginning of it kinda took me out of it because it felt like something out of a video game, but I found out that is kinda the feel the author was going for, and it quickly evolves into more than just that in my opinion. They're not top tier literature by any means, but they ARE a lot of fun and end up getting pretty intense at times. Plus he's obviously put a lot of thought into his magic system(s) and they're intriguing in the say way that Sanderson's are. If you're an audiobook listener like myself, the guy who does the narration for all of Andrew Rowe's books is Nick Podehl who is one of the two people who have done the Kingkiller Chronicles audiobooks (the other being Rupert Degas). I do know that which audiobook narrator you prefer is a volatile topic of conversation when it comes to KKC, but I really enjoyed Nick Podehl's version (although I have not heard the Degas versions, so I can't give you a comparative review). And if you enjoyed Nick's KKC narration, then you'll enjoy his work on these books.
I want to read mistborn and the way of kings, but they are incomplete. In the other hand now I want to read Malaz, but Im a bit scared bc it would be my first time with such a long saga, what should i do?
For books like Mass Effect: Look no further than The Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton. It consists of 3 books: The Reality Dysfunction, The Neutronium Alchemist, and The Naked God.
I know this video is 3 years old, but I've been looking for books that feel like Skyrim, which is one of my favorite games. Are there any that you'd add to this list since you first made it? Including Zelda and maybe Ghost of Tsushima?
Great video! I just looked at reviews from Hollow Knight yesterday, the coincidence 🤗 Zelda Botw is one of my favourite games, so Earthsea is definitely higher on my tbr now. I haven't played much of Bioshock but Selin Ascends also moves up on my tbr now! Have you played Alice Madness Returns? If so, a book rec in a part 2 of this video would be great 🤗
I recommend The Nier Games, they’re short jrpg (compared to most XD) it mixes absurdity with philosophy, and the games often referencing philosophers, literary works, and elements. An example of this is the main character of 2B from Automata, her name is actually a reference to Shakespeare’s famous line “To be or not to be” this is in reference to her struggles in game. As for a book series similar to Nier, I actually have a hard time thinking of one. My friend mentioned to me that murderbot is kinda similar, another one I actually read that I agree fits is maybe the original by Mary and Brandon Sanderson. They’re not similar technically, but the way they handle themes are so yeah XD
I have played Mass Effect and read the Revelation Space series. Revelation Space is amazing, and yes if people like Mass Effect they will absolutely love it.
Sorry, if I'm picking "the dark souls of books" its not malazan, even though thats a Great series. I'm picking Book of the New Sun for that. Why? People have written books on how to decipher some of the more cryptic elements of Book of the new sun. Yes, it is a book that has strategy guides for it.
Favourite past games, Dark Age of Camelot, Everquest, Guild Wars 2 and Aion. Currently playing Kingdom of Heroes Tactics Wars on ipad. My PC died still to buy a new one.
I love the Bioshock saga (my fav probably) also the Metro games and books and also Dishonored, Hollow Knight, Assassins Creed (to a lesser degree i guess) and TES (I don't remember if im missing one or two u mentioned that I also loved) well, thing is I was already recommended Mistborn and now that you tell me that it reminded you of Dishonored... Instabuy, also I will look the similar to Bioshock one up
My recommendation for a Post Apocalyptic book that a game could be based on? I don't play video games. I used to play table top RPG's . Play Car Wars? Try "Damnation Alley" by Roger Zelazny.
That's just amazing. Does anyone knows a book like Sillent hill? Like a guy lost in a strange city, alone alone, something like that? I really like do read something like this
Except for the way he dresses, and his child like face, Link is nothing like Peter. I mean, the games are a lot of fun like Neverland I suppose, but Link's serious and committed to his quest, and not forgetting people he loves on a whim!
David Farland's last Runelords book came out more than 10 years ago. He's supposedly writing a new one, but we'll see if it ever comes out. The concept of the series is very cool. The first four books were great. After that, they went from good to decent to milking it.
Cool concept video. I liked le guin but when are you worldhoppers going to read and review other influential 70's authors like Fritz Lieber? Malazan was exceptional but ending kind of petered off for me.
